No Country for Old Men...haven't seen it yet, but as a big McCarthy enthusiast, I am glad it's the Coen Bros. doing this. I hear there are also plans to film The Road.

haven't seen it yet either. i'm not the total Coen slut, but i wanna see this one. not showing in Boulder yet. which is kinda weird to be honest.

Looks like they'll be filming The Road in the Pittsburgh area. I think I'll try to be an extra, "Roadside Corpse #34"...

I saw the flick and enjoyed it. Pretty faithful adapdation as well I'd say.

I only get into the theater for movies my kids want to see anymore. I think The Road is not on the schedule for them. I guess I'll have to sneak out...

The Road is at the top of our list. Will probably see it this weekend or next. My son is extremely hyped for this flick as am I. The wife hated No Country but is willing to try this one. The daughter will be home from school a week from tomorrow, so maybe I'll wait.

I bought the book on Saturday morning and finished it on Saturday night.

How can you describe the tone of the novel except for bleak, stark and depressing, but completely compelling? He sucks you into the story from page 1, and you don't want to put it down. A lot of missing details, like the characters' names; where they are, how they got there and where they're going; and why the world is as it is. These details have no relevance to the real story though, so they would just get in the way. You get enough clues to complete the picture. The characters' existence and survival are defined by a few simple rules, and you pretty much understand this from the very beginning. I never knew how amazing it could be to find a hidden stash of canned food.

Or maybe, you don't. That's how McCarthy rolls - he doesn't care if you're following along or not. The Road was the most dismal book I've ever read...which is exactly what he was looking to create. I'll be interested in seeing how Hollywood can handle this.

Depends on what you mean by "complete" I guess. For some artists a blank canvas of a single color is a complete picture.

This is the first book of his that I've read. I'll be catching up on the rest in the next couple of months.

My suggestion - grab the Appalachian books first...Suttree, Child of God, The Orchard Keeper, and Outer Dark.

McCarthy never worked a real job in his life. He was at points, broker than broke, getting booted out of cheap hotels, yet refused to give up on his one true craft. And now look at him. You'd think working various odd jobs would give you life experiences to write about, yet he took the opposite approach and still had plenty of inspiration to draw from.
