Top 25 programs this decade

Post by TheJON »

Just curious what everyone ranks as their Top 25 for the 2000's since this decade has come to an end.........

This is mine
1.USC
2.Florida
3.Texas (if they beat Alabama, they jump Florida)
4.Ohio State
5.LSU
6.Oklahoma
7.Miami
8.Georgia
9.West Virginia
10.Michigan
11.Oregon (overtakes Michigan with Rose Bowl win)
12.Boise State (overtakes Oregon with a BCS win and Oregon BCS loss)
13.Alabama
14.Iowa
15.TCU
16.Auburn
17.Virginia Tech
18.Florida State
19.Wisconsin
20.Penn State
21.Tennessee
22.Utah
23.Nebraska
24.Boston College
25.Georgia Tech

Close but no cigar........

Texas Tech, Cincinnati, Washington State, BYU, California, Notre Dame

And the best teams of this decade..........

1.Miami 2001 (it's not even close)
2.USC 2004
3.Texas 2005
4.Florida State 2000
5.USC 2005

10 things this decade of college football will be remembered by.......

1.Tim Tebow. I know, it annoys the fuck outta me. But let's face it, dude is going to be the most remembered college athlete of this decade.
2.Notre Dame's worst decade ever. 70-52 does not lie. That's their record this decade. Hard to believe.
3.Pete Carrol. Built a juggernaut at USC. Has had as good of success at USC as any of his predecessors and that says a lot considering where he coaches.
4."Big Game Bob" and "Choker Bob". Stoops earned both of those nicknames in the same decade. Amazing how quickly people forget about your success.
5.BCS busters. The mid-majors not only started staking claims for BCS bowls, but they also started making BCS bowls............and winning them.
6.Miami-tOSU questionable call. Very few outside Buckeye fan actually thinks that pass interference was the right call and the fact of the matter is it wasn't. Miami would have 2 straight titles if not for that cheap call.
7.Ohio State owning Michigan. A reverse of the 1990's. Michigan cannot beat Tressel.
8.The demise of Bobby Bowden. What the hell happened to Florida State and Bobby Bowden?
9.Reggie Bush scandal. USC will never pay the price for this because they're USC, but we all know they should. The NCAA wants us to just forget about it, but we never will.
10.Washington State goes from Top 10 to bottom 1 before you could even blink your eye. What the hell?

Ranking the conferences overall this decade....

1.SEC (no doubt, it's not even close)
2.Big-10 (Outside of tOSU no dominating team, but a lot of really solid programs)
3.Pac-1, little 9 (USC is dominating, Oregon is good most of the time. Rest of conference just average)
4.Big-12 (Outside of Texas and OU there haven't been any good programs this decade)
5.ACC (remember when they were supposed to become a super conference? what happened to that?)
6.Big Least (just not a very good league once Miami and Va Tech left)

10 worst coaches of this decade........

1.Ron Zook (Florida, Illinois)
2.Jerry Retardo (LSU, Indiana)
3.Bobby Williams (Michigan State)
4.Steve Kragthorpe (Louisville, Tulsa)
5.Buddy Teevens (Stanford)
6.Greg Robinson (Syracuse)
7.Ty Willingham (Notre Dame, Washington)
8.Tim Brewster (Minnesota)
9.John Mackovic (Arizona)
10.Charlie Weiss (Notre Dame)

I could pick on a few things there, and probably will at some point, but for now, pretty darn solid.

'Cept Oregon was absolutely fucked out of a chance to challenge the '01 Canes.

I think 3-6 were really darn close. You could make a case for any of those 4 teams being ranked ahead of the other 3. But I think clearly USC and Florida are 1-2.

Michigan at #10 seems a little high....given the last 33% of the decade.

To put that in perspective, ND's previous worst decade was the 80's. Their record in that decade was 76-39-2 (but only 52-38-2 prior to the last two seasons of that decade). The only worst stretch over an extended period of time was from '81-'86, when we were a combined 35-32-1.

I beg to differ on placing the Big East 6th on that list.

If you're going to use the entire decade, then they should be much further up the ladder because of Miami and VT of the early portion of the decade. I'll also stand pat that the Big East has been better than the ACC since the 2005 season with the current alignment.

^^^^^ Though some teams had easier goes of it than others, you'd pretty much have to base everybody off of winning %. That's 1999-2008.
Considering we want 2000-2009, why would you use that?

OU has as many national titles as Texas in the 2000s.
OU has 6 conference titles to Texas' 2 in the 2000s.
OU has a 6-4 record H2H against Texas in the 2000s.
Texas has a better record in BCS bowl games. OU has played in 3 more BCS title games.
Texas has a slightly better overall record in the 2000s.

I think you can make a pretty good case for OU to be above Texas.

You can probably make a pretty good argument over Ohio State as well. What has Ohio State done to be ranked above OU? Roughly the same bowl record, same number of national championships. Don't see how you can put either tOSU or Texas over LSU's two national titles, either.
I did all of this straight off the top of my head. I can see your points. Like I said, after the first 2 I think the next 4 are very close. Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't Texas won double digit games every year this decade? OU has had a couple mediocre years and Texas has had none. Texas also has more BCS bowl wins. OU has the edge in head-to-head and conference titles. LSU has 1 more title than either of the teams so that is their edge. They are all really close and I would be fine switching 3-6 any way but I defintely think USC is 1, Florida is 2 and then my 3-6 are whatever order you want between LSU, UT, OU, and OSU.

But who would you replace them with? they may not have had a typical Michigan decade but overall they were still pretty good. 3 BCS bowls, 2 conference titles. Once I got to this spot I had a hard time ranking the rest because everyone else had at least a couple down years. There was no real consistent programs throughout the decade beyond the Top 8 or so.

which is a very relative criterion of comparison vs. OU in this case. how many of those W's were as the #2 Big XII team/at large when OU was the league champ? W-L record in "BCS bowls" is not 1:1 as a criterion in that sense, imo.

in 03,04, and 08...this stat *punishes* OU simply for not being the best team in the nation (in BCS terms) yet *rewards* UT for finishing 2nd in the South division and winning a BCS bowl against a top 10-15 type opponent (for instance last year's Ohio State team that finished the season 1-3 against ranked teams)....which is far different than playing the eventual BCS/National Champion.

A few things about Texas.
If we win the BCS championship Texas should be #1 and it's not even close.

-Two undisputed, undefeated National Championships (no one else can say this and no one else has more than 2 NCs anyway)

-More wins than anyone in a BCS conference (2nd isnt very close)

-9 straight 10+ win seasons

- 8 of 9 bowl wins

- 4 BCS bowl wins, zero losses

-more weeks in the top 10, more weeks in the top 25

-more wins against ranked opponents

not to mention a very weak OOC year-in, year-out (re: total wins). you can't live off the 2 game Ohio State series forever. the steady diet of directional Texas schools and SWC step-children isn't competition worthy of self-fellating #1 giant like Texas.

That is an asinine statement. Cincy is going to get beat. TCU is going to win but they will not win the AP. So, if Alabama wins the game are they undisputed?

I do not see how the Big 10 is 2nd on Jon's list of conferences. Who outside of Ohio State had a decent decade? MIchigan? Penn State? Iowa? Let's see:

Michigan: Won the 1999 season's Orange Bowl. They won a Citrus, Capital 1 and Outback Bowl. They lost 5 other Bowl's including the Rose Bowl and the Alamo Bowl.

Iowa Played in 1 BCS game and lost. They also went 1-1 in the Alamo Bowl, 2-1 in the Outback Bowl and won the Capital 1 Bowl.

Penn State: Played in 5 Bowls. Went 1-1 in BCS games and 2-1 in other Bowls.

Ohio State: Played in 6 BCS games including 3 Championship games (1 win) going 3-3. Went 1-2 in non-BCS Bowl games.

Big XII:

Oklahoma: Played in 7 BCS games including 4 Championship games (1 win). They have a 2-5 BCS record. They played in 2 other Bowls and won both games.

Nebraska: Played in 2 BCS games winning 1 (2000 Fiesta Bowl) and the 2001 Championship game that they lost. They went 4-2 in other Bowl games including the Cotton and Alamo Bowls.

Kansas: played in 4 bowls and went 3-1. Once of the wins was the 2007 Orange Bowl.

Texas: They have played in 9 bowls and gone 7-2. They lost the Holiday Bowl twice. Texas is 3-0 in BCS games including 1 MNC win.

Overall BCS Records:

For the decade the BIg 10 is 4-11
For the decade the Big XII is 6-8

The BIg 10 won 1 MNC. Ohio State 2002=2003. The Big XII won 2. Oklahoma 2000-2001 and Texas 2005-2006. The Big 10 played for the MNC 3 times (all Ohio State) and went 1-2. The Big XII played for the MNC 6 times going 2-4.

I think the BIg XII is the better conference.

2-5 were all pretty close really. You forgot Wisconsin from your list. They did win 10+ games about 4 times this decade.

The Big-10 had some depth. Not a lot of great teams, but more depth throughout the decade than most conferences.

Who in the Big-12 other than OU and Texas was any good this decade? The entire North was horrible for the majority of the decade. A&M was mediocre. Texas Tech was average. Okie St sucked most of the decade, and Baylor was terrible the entire decade.

Who, other than Cincy and TCU students and alumni, could possibly dispute a Texas or Alabama NC?
Typical elite program mindset. What exactly did Texas do that TCU or Cincinnati did not? This should be good.

I don't see how anyone could dispute 2001 Miami as the best team of the decade. Heck, they're probably the best team of all-time. But nobody in their right mind could rank Miami as the team of the decade. I think Roger took it that way.

I do. '01 Miami. Best team I've seen in the last 10 years. Sorry.
People talk about that 01 Miami team because they put so many guys in the NFL, but look how many guys 05 Texas and 04 USC put into the league. I think Texas has about 42 guys in the league right now and of them we put about 18 from the 05 team in. Not sure how many the 04 USC team did but it has been a lot.

When it comes right down to it, no matter who Texas played as long as we had Vince we were going to beat them, including 01 miami and 04 USC.

Nah. '04 USC had a great D. Texas barely beat the '05 team, whose meh D was battered all year long by injuries. The '04 team had the same basic offense, and their D made stops.
