New rule proposition...thoughts?

So I got season tix to the Colts on the 40 yard line 9 rows up on the visiting side. I can't see this a lot at other stadiums but I see it a lot here. Many a team comes in and hates the Cots no huddle so there are a lot of fake injuries to slow the offense down. Guy will stay on the field for a few minutes as if he is hurt, and then as soon as he gets to the sideline, I see him laughing and is back in one play later. Jacksonville is the worst at this.

So, my rule change would be anyone whose injury calls for a delay in the game (meaning play clock stoppage) should sit 5 plays minimum. Not only would this support the bullshit of fake injuries, but if someone gets banged a bit, it gives them a guaranteed bit of time to look that player over rather than forcing them back on the field.

If you disagree, give good reasons why. I think this takes a lot of bullshit out of the game.

That action is already penalized. In the final two minutes of a half or the game it costs them a timeout. If they don't have a time out, I believe it is a delay of game penalty and/or they run time off the clock.

Faking injury so your defense can catch its breath and/or change personnel at any point in the game should be penalized. And by that, I don't mean marking off yards, but if your injury, fake or not, causes a game stoppage, I don't think it is over the line to say you have to sit a few plays minimum.

I just never really thought about faking injury as a strategy to slow the other team's offense. Pretty much all teams have a no huddle offense that they go to as part of the two minute drill, not just the Colts. And as mvscal pointed out, there is a rule in place to prevent such things, but that is more along the lines of penalizing the offense rather than the defense. What I've seen is akin to a soccer player or hockey player taking a dive. Ultimate bitch moves, and the NFL ain't for bitches. I can separate rooting interests to look at it from an objective point of view. Can't you? Hell, I wish the Titans had the same problem.

Soccer may have its bitch move divers but it also has laws that will put an injured player off the field until the referee lets 'em back on. Be interesting to see if football adopted a similar rule. Go down a man a couple of plays until "injured guy" is ready to come back on. Oh, what's that, coach? I didn't see you waving frantically at me gesticulating like a severed lizard tail that you want your pussy diver back on the field to play defense. Oh, you're in the red zone now? Maybe you should consult that Denny's menu in your left hand and see if it tells you to use one of those timeouts now.

I'm pretty sure there is a 5 yard penalty for the defense in those situations.

The Steelers have been going no huddle a lot more than most teams this year. What you propose would make Big Ben's day. I just happen to think it is a stupid idea. The fact that it screws the Colts is even better.

Your rule is pointless though. Since teams platoon the D line anyway, one of the players who needs a blow will fake the injury. He'll then sit on the sidelines for five plays, but he was gonna do that anyway.
