did you get mail from the IRS ??
Got my 1040 booklet in the mail today. At first I thought it was the Medicare update booklet by the thickness of the thing. I have yet to open it for a look to see why it has so many more pages than usual. Remember when we used to get them the day after Christmas ? I'll probably take a look at my tax liability next month. I'm guessing I might owe around $2K. You can go back to work after age 65 and still draw your SSI reimbursements, but you pay a steep price for it in April. The price we pay for living in the greatest country !

I've determined that I can spend the money more effectively than the gov can, so I won't be contributing this year.
Thanks for the offer, IRS.

Technically there is no law about paying your federal income taxes... the constitutional amendment was never ratified by the required 2/3 states either.Trampis wrote:Not planning on filing this year Poptart? Or are you now a citizen of South Korea or wherever i thought you lived?

I've heard of that. How then, do people end up in federal prisons and have their assets seized and auctioned off? I've never researched it, but am curious.

I'm a U.S. citizen, Trampis, and am just funnin' around about not paying up.

I don't know first hand because I just go ahead and pay them. I have however seen an interview with two people, one and attorney and another a former IRS case worker (or some such, can't remember their actual title), who neither have paid taxes in something like 8 years and discuss that there are no statutes or actual laws concerning federal income tax in the Law code and that the Constitutional Amendment that the IRS hides behind was never ratified by the states.H4ever wrote:SunCoastSooner wrote:Technically there is no law about paying your federal income taxes... the constitutional amendment was never ratified by the required 2/3 states either.Trampis wrote:Not planning on filing this year Poptart? Wesley Snipes went for that angle a few years ago when he was 8+ million in the red to the IRS. It went so poorly that during one hearing, he tried to "Jacko" the gov't witha check for $5mil. The prosecutor thanked him for the "down payment" and continued with the trial.

I worked with a collection agent/disbarred attorney/process server many years back who claimed the same thing. He claimed that every year he meticulously reported every last dime of income and simply neglected to enclose the check with his return. According to him, it was only a crime to fail to file or to lie on a return. Now I could never tell if this guy was bullshitting me or not, and I sure as hell wasn't about to test the theory on my own credit rating/criminal record, but that's what he said.SunCoastSooner wrote:I don't know first hand because I just go ahead and pay them. Tim Teblow my savior? Are you smoking crack again screw? I already said I pay my taxes... I think Bsmack is correct in what his friend told him because it is the same thing the two people being interviewed stated as well.Screw_Michigan wrote:Much like your Lord and Savior, Tim Tebow, that is just pie in the sky bullshit. Those of you who don't file or pay . . . Why don't you support our troops? Bumper stickers don't pay for armored vehicles and planes.
Re: did you get mail from the IRS ??
I always file (usually around the end of my automatic extension because I'm fucking lazy) and I usually get money back.
Yeah I know it's dumb to give Sammy an interest free loan for the amount of my refund, but at least I don't owe anything. The refund comes in handy to pay down the credit card and property taxes.
Was self-employed for a few years and that was a major pain in the ass. Had to make sure to sock enough away to pay the piper because there was no witholding. Was supposed to pay quarterly installments but I never did because that would have been a quarterly pain in the ass. Just waited until the end of the year and put up a couple hundred extra for the late fees.

I have an accountant but you damn skippy about being self-employed and "owning" your own business. I don't have to pay much in Payroll taxes since only two people actually and technically work for me and the LLC directly. The trainee/apprentice appraisers are legally and technically self employed contractors who work on a commission basis.

BTW, I've known plenty of process servers and collection guys. I even moonlighted as a process server myself for a few years. 75 to 150 bucks for 3-9 hours of work a week kept me in beer money. Most of the guys I knew were honest working people who were willing to take some educated risks to enhance their take home pay. Now the disbarred lawyers I've known have all been as slippery as the day is long.

I haven't gotten squat from the IRS...yet. I hate this time of the year. I usually get something back from my federal return, but not much.
I ended up paying the state last year and will more than likely end up paying them again.

Can't wait to file my feds this year.
My wife was laid off in July, found a new job in October but did some freelance work prior to finding that job. She was then was let go from that company on Christmas Eve (long story) but picked up another freelance project a 2 weeks prior. That freelance project helped her land her most recent job - she starts Monday. Between the job changes and the 4-5 projects she did, I'm wondering if I should hire an accountant or keep with TurboTax. She's probably going to continue with the freelance projects she's been getting so much that I want her to form her own corp. Any suggestions?
Oh and for those who are in the marketing/PR field and looking for employment or to move around, there are PLENTY of jobs out there if you know where to look and have kick ass references and projects to back you up.

Actually I don't always agree with that. In divorce proceedings in some states when the couple has already separated and living in different counties whoever gets their service delivered first pretty much controls jurisdiction. As sad as it seems being a tax payer who votes in a specific county is something a judge will consider in the back of their mind whether they admit to it or not. Politics on the bench is bullshit.Screw_Michigan wrote:Process servers aren't the scumbags, the true scumbags are those who are hiding from being served process.

My wife was laid in July by some black dude at work, found a new job in October but gave some freelance head prior to finding another pimp. She was then was let go from that company on Christmas Eve (long dong, too many teeth)) but had picked up another freeway customer 2 weeks prior. That John helped her meet her most recent pimp-- she starts Monday. Between the job changes and the 4-5 Johns a week she does in our apartment, I'm wondering if I should hire an accountant or keep with TurboTax. She's probably going to continue with the home Johns-- she's been getting so much dick that I want her to form her own corp. Any suggestions?

Here's a suggestion: Join the military and go to Afghanistan. Plenty of opportunities to make contacts--as long as you've got kick ass helicopter and jet fighters to back you up. And you won't have to think about your wife mopping up after the "train" leaves, etc. As for her tax questions, you can call ACORN.

The first divorce I ever served was on a husband. I was told by the lawyer who gave me the papers that the guy was living alone and his wife and kids had moved out. So, it was more than a little fucked up seeing his 3 kids on the couch when I handed him the papers. But it turned absolutely sublime when he started yelling for his wife upstairs demanding to know what the hell was going on. That was when I learned that getting the fuck out ASAP was always the best strategy when serving papers.SunCoastSooner wrote:Actually I don't always agree with that. Still, I don't see where the guy serving process is to blame for a fucked up system. If you ask me, jurisdiction should always be in the county the couple last jointly resided in barring a mutual agreement to the contrary. As sad as it seems being a tax payer who votes in a specific county is something a judge will consider in the back of their mind whether they admit to it or not. I don't really do residential work in my field but I make exceptions when it is high end litigation (divorce, eminent domain, or a substantial trust). You get to charge better than your typical run of the mill house re-fi or loan. My "litigation personality" is a lot more akin to my internet personality (arrogant-young-prick) than it is my real life one (I'm actually a pretty soft spoken, humble, and conservative guy in social circles) but my county and the two surrounding counties typically settle out of court for substantially more than they intended to do when they see my name on a list of witnesses. I've had one DPBR complaint filed on me in over eight years now... which is saying something in this economy where everyone wants to blame what their value was four to five years ago on the appraiser for what it is now. That one complaint was filed by a colleague who I wiped the floor with in court. At the end of an 18 month investigation I was cleared and he was investigated for incompetence which he ended up paying about $10,000 in fines and served a 2 year suspension for committing. I had two different colleagues back up my evaluation (which had a difference of $14.2M from his) from previous work they had done on the property and all of our evaluations were within $1.3M with mine in the middle. Probably seems like a lot to you guys but we are talking about a $40M+ piece of property and in reality those numbers are surprisingly close together for such work.BSmack wrote:The first divorce I ever served was on a husband. Re: did you get mail from the IRS ??
I actually found most of the attorneys I dealt with to be reasonably honest. The one case I really felt bad about serving was a personal injury summons/complaint I served on a VFW hall in Dunkirk NY. It was your typical "I slipped in a puddle of beer and broke my leg now pay me 500k" lawsuit. Now if you've ever been to Dunkirk, NY, you would know that it is a classic example of a rust belt ghost town. I don't think the whole town is appraised at 500k. When I served it, I thought the guy who took it was going to start crying once he realized what it was. That ride home sucked.SunCoastSooner wrote:I don't really do residential work in my field but I make exceptions when it is high end litigation (divorce, eminent domain, or a substantial trust).
