Former NBA Star Paul Shirley Says He’s Not Donating a ‘Cent’ to Haiti Earthquake Relief
New York Daily News, January 27, 2010
Paul Shirley, whose brief NBA career included 18 games and 33 points with three teams over three seasons, is not in the giving mood. {snip}
Shirley writes on flipcollective.com why he won’t be joining the millions from around the globe sending money to support the Haitian relief efforts.
“I haven’t donated a cent to the Haitian relief effort. And I probably will not.
“{snip} If I use history as my guide, I don’t think the people of Haiti will do much with my money either.
{snip}
He continued: “Shouldn’t there be some discourse on how the millions of dollars that are being poured into Haiti will be spent? And at least a slight reprimand for the conditions prior to the earthquake? Some kind of inquisition? Something like this?:
Dear Haitians—
First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded.
As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it’s possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?
Sincerely,
The Rest of the World
The essay, posted on the FlipCollective Web site on Tuesday, has already cost Shirley one job.
Shirley was fired from his freelance gig with ESPN on Wednesday.
Fired from his freelance gig at ESPN? That's what you call fired? No...no...this is fired
Shirley is just a jerk who's jumping on the Tea Baggers wagon. What do these folks have in common? Scared: check; Ignorant: check; Hard Core Christer: check; Panting for apocalypse: check.
It's a blend of fascistic elements that has historically resulted in all sorts of disastrous consequences.

With all the horseshit around here, you'd think there'd be a pony somewhere.
No, Jim Evertt was a starter, for starts. Shirley is a creep, a stiff--back up and garbage time. Evertt acted a man, spanking the sputtering midget. Shirley acted a coward, attacking the fallen.
Sure, Finder, tell us a little of the "truth" that you know about the history of Haiti and the U.S. meddling in its affairs. Start with the 2004 kidnapping and deporting of the island nation's first ever duly elected president. C'mon, moron, let's here some of your "truth."
Haiti would be a hell of lot better off, no question, without the history of our previously installed puppets--the ghastly Papa Doc and his son Baby Doc--absolutely. And the neighboring island and Central and South American nations would also be much better off without the "interference" of the U.S.--which is code for total military annexation and complete corporate exploitation of natural resources and labor. Yes, exactly, you are getting it. :wink:
Once again your understanding of history is superficial at best. Go ahead and tell us about the lack of US involvement in Haiti post Kennedy. Please be specific in the area of Cuba/US/Haiti relations.
It's true the Duvaliers weren't installed in the traditional U.S. manner--as in Guatemala--but despite Papa Doc's "nationalist" facade he was whole hog in with the U.S. industrialists, receiving huge payoffs to "combat communism"--which of course he kept. The point is that the U.S. always maintained a readiness to invade, i.e., 1915.
