Bullshit. Most microbrews I’ve sampled use no preservatives, so they do have somewhat limited shelf lives and I would never store them unrefrigerated. Tardowen bought this stuff last fall and is just now getting around to drinking them? Sounds like user error.

When I was in college everybody thougt that Heineken was the be all to end all of beers.

Seems like about half the time I ever got that stuff it had a skunky taste. But, hey, it was a Heinie, so that must be the way beer's supposed to taste.

Six months in Germany when I was 19 sort of set me straight on that. The Budweiser in Germany was pretty damn good, and it didn't have any rice in it.

Not into the beer scene in Portland just yet, however, I was very happy to see a bar while heading out to the coast on Highway 26 with a Blue Moon sign in the window. I stopped...

BTW, Linenkuegel aint got nuthin on Naragansett...ahhh, I miss my summers out East.

Following up - college was dominated by the "ice" beers for me starting with Ice House then the Canadian "Ice" beers like Molson Ice. But then we found it, the it of all college beers...

40s of Bull Ice. Buck forty-nine per with 8 plus percent alcohol...cool thing was turning the bottle around and seeing the picture of the bull on the back of the label.

Man all of that stuff was shit...

Ding!

I did a tour of the Otter Creek brewery in Middlebury last summer. One of the things they emphasized was that any beer bought from their brewery was 100% organic and therefore had a refrigerated shelf life of about 90 days. They made a pretty big point of saying that drinking any beer after that date was absolutely not advised. They also said Todd should go ahead and pull the trigger already.

This is from my local microbrewery:
ALE ASYLUM is unfiltered and all natural. We use no additives, preservatives, fruit, horse hooves, fish guts, or extracts. Our ingredient list: water, malt, hops, and yeast. This is what we mean when we say our beer is FERMENTED IN SANITY. You know who makes it, you know what it's made with. You know after having one you'll want another.

i was under the impression even good beers had a half way decent (3-4 months) shelf life if stored at normal room temps. i guess that ain't so.

wonder if this explains heineken tasting like skunk piss, the few times I've tried it. that fukking pisswater has got to be the all time king of over rated over priced beer. i actually think beast light tastes better or should i say less bad.

I tried a couple of times to be "cool Heineken guy" in my early twenties. That stuff tastes terrible. It has to be a bad joke Europe is playing on us stupid Americans.

Whats Beast Light? Ive been guessing for a long time now that it is Busch Light?

In Germany that's all that's allowed. Or at least was from 1516 until 1987. Apparently most German beers still comply.

corona- another marketing scam. not as big a farce as heineken, but, it is watered down mediocre beer which they put in a nice bottle, tell you to put a twist of lime in it and charge double what they should.

It's fine on a hot day while eating Mexican food.

Prefer Modelo or Bohemia, though.

pretty much anything cold and wet is fine when it's hot out. i prefer a cold glass of ice water or homemade ice tea with a ridiculoud amount of freshly squeezed lemon.

corona, imo. is basically expensive coors light.

That shouldn't be an issue with an Imperial Stout. They run 9 to 10% ABV.

That is a consquence of improper storage and handling.

Beer is photosensitive and will develop that skunky taste after prolonged exposure to light. The green bottles also don't filter out the harmful wavelengths as well as brown bottles.

I used to drink Dos Equis, but then my finger was shot off in the Spanish Civil War.
The middle finger on my right hand.
After that I could only pleasure Gina Lollobrigida with the middle finger of my left hand.
I blame this on Dos Equis because now, though I am still quite interesting, I am no longer the most interesting man in the world.

Legend has it the lime origin isn't just chic, the acidity destroys germs and kills the taste of any methane left over after brewing

Well it is Mexican and that's what I was taught. Lager and Lime came from breweries using water out of the Thames five minutes after someone took a crap in it.
There's always something practical behind these habits.

I'll pass, thanks.

To get to more than about 6.5%, it requires what are essentially wine yeasts. And the problem with wine yeasts is they create strong wine notes, which is all well and good...

in wine.

In beer, a "wine note" is much like an "ass note."

BTW -- I get that cheap beer exists for a reason, and if I'm going to be mercilessly pounding canned beer (like floating the river, for example)...

why the fuck would anyone opt for Beast Light? You've resigned yourself to drinking assy beer, and are obviously drinking-for-æffect, so why not spend that same cash on the fortified version, Beast Ice, rockin the higher ABV?

It makes no sense.

What's the deal with college kids and pbr these days?

growing up, pbr was what old drunks drank. apparently now, it's the cool in beer among college kids, apparently to the point that the makers realize they have a "cool" beer and are jacking the price up some. this of course negates the only possible reason for drinking this swill in the first place.

and yes, beast light is milwaukee's best light. back in my pre beer snob days, i drank plenty of the stuff. actually, i'd usually go with teh beast ice. never claimed it was good, but did believe that it was tolerable and the best tasting of the shit cheap beers. nowadays, i would much prefer to drink fewer good beers.

Drank a bit of PBR back in high school around 1968-1970. I swear, it had a better more pronounced flavor back then. Of course I also drank Schlitz, Blatz, Hudepohl, Strohs or whatever else we could get our hands on.
