OK the whole thing's based on a meaningless test (except for National Merit Scholarships) of how well you take meaningless tests but still...he's the only one in his class of about 600.

Books for one semester?
Actually there are a lot of schools (most of them desperate for quality students) that offer partial or full ride merit scholarships based on that letter.
Back in the day, I got a National Merit Scholarship Letter of Commendation. Not quite on the same level as a finalist, but you still had to be in the top 2% to get a Letter of Commendation.
Of course, that and 50 cents got me a cup of coffee. Come to think of it, I probably needed a little more than 50 cents even back then.

I got one of those. Who knows what might have happened if I hadn't drank so much the night before, necessitating the need for mmmmmmaaaaasssssssss pot-smoking before the test, to take the edge off.
Scholarship ? What the hell is that ? I wasn't quite Dins, but I was on the Dean's "other" list.
Hope your kid does well in college. He's going to need to in order to pay off all the loans.

Never mind your capitalizing letters to begin a sentence deal, it's that whole apostrophe thing which truly vexes you, innit? It's like fucking hell on earth!
Admit it. You were texting with Wags's daughter as she was driving to a Liz Phair concert when you wrote that one, weren'tcha?

Congratulations to your boy and you Mikey. The merit scholarship is worthy of congratulations. Your son has to have natural smarts to attain that but he also had to have been brought up well and with discipline by his parents.
