nice game guys, this place is going batshit. I had no idea you were so good (actually yes I did) - that's a good team and mentally strong as all hell. Didn't expect a disciplined game from either side, but wow.

Props to Canada. Miller stops that shot 99% of the time, just not today. Great tournament, great win for the US last Sunday, just wish that win would have been today.
I called my shot, Brodeur blows. Luongo should have started from the beginning.

I've been to the Canadian Embassy three of the last seven nights to watch Olympic hockey and I have to rack you Canadians for throwing sweet hockey-centered parties and, of course, serving us free Molson Canadian. Last Sunday, after the US beat Canada, I tried to score one last free beer as the game end. Bar was closed. I noticed tonight as we left the bar was still WIDE OPEN for a while.
Props, dicks.

the sled does have a weight restriction, the sledders, apparently not. i suspect part of night trains success is having just a little bit more potential energy at the top of the hill than all those faggy little euro sleds.BSmack wrote:How the fuck did KC Paul score a ride on an Olympic bobsled? Re: Bestest winter olympic sport.
more weight makes their acceleration out of the gate a bit slower, but, that is negated if said fatass has a powerful enough set of legs. Once aboard, weight is your fliend. Extra weight means extra push thanks to gravity without added wind resistance. i guess there is a very tiny increase in friction, but, those blades on that ice have a pretty damn small amount of drag anyway.KC Scott wrote:Sorry holic, more weight would make them slower.
if you'd like a comparison, talk to cyclist dudes. heavyweight cyclist pwn lightweight ones on the downhills. ofcourse they give it back with interest on the uphills which is why tour de frog dude is usually about the weight of paul's left calf. so, until bobsled starts having a hillclimb section, having a little extra junk in the trunk is prolly a good thing, assuming you've got the hp to get it started.

Re: Bestest winter olympic sport.
Watch out Einstein, here comes T1B!
The fatter dude would increase the drag over the ice slightly, which would make the heavier sled go slightly slower. But if the drag was somehow equalized, and the aerodynamic drag was the same...
The weight doesn't æffect how fast the sled goes down the hill.
Again, other factors will have an æffect, such as the drag coefficient over the ice and the aerodynamic drag, but the actual weight... no.
Sin,
Physics 101
Seriously, you guys need to log into T1B to learn the basic laws of fucking gravity? Seriously?

the bobsled is not run in a vacuum.
fill a balloon with air, fill another with water. Drop them off a building. Which hits the ground first and why? They have similar drag coefficients. By your logic, they will fall at the same rate.
acceleration=32 ft/sec squared in a vacuum. bobsleds are fairly slick, but, they do have aero drag. Quite a bit of it, actually, at 90 mph.
whether or not the extra weight's increase in force overcomes the reduced acceleration is anybody's guess. I won't even pretend to be that smart.
I just know one thing. Uncle sam won the fukking 4 man with santa claus driving the thing.
rack him.

Re: Bestest winter olympic sport.
sorry scott, but, you don't know what the fukk you're talking about here. in a soap box derby extra weight sure as hell will help, assuming it doesn't increase drag or increase rolling resistance much. in soapbox weight IS power. nascar, last i checked doesn't run downhill, so being heavier would be nothing but a detriment. more power to weight ratio certainly does help. motocross is an even bigger example of lighter = better. comparing it or nascar is pretty much comparing apples to handgrenades though.KC Scott wrote:No. examples; soap box derby or Nascar - it's power to weight ratio.smackaholic wrote:

Same power propelling two objects - the lighter weight object will be faster.
I learned this the hard way, in 125 cc Motocross - I was 150 and the two kids that beat regularly were about 130

Re: Bestest winter olympic sport.
"Drag" is generally considered to be air resistance or fluid resistance. The force between the blades and the ice is known as "friction". Adding a fat guy would increase the friction on the blades but not affect the drag, unless his fat rolls hang over the side of the cockpit.
The whole thing is a fairly simple balance of forces.
Acceleration due to gravity (g) is constant 9.8 meters per second squared.
The force due to gravity is the mass of the object times acceleration, mg. The direction of this force is straight down.
Frictional force is propotional to the normal perpendicular force between the blades and the ice, and is related to the weight of the sled and the angle or slope of the hill. It's independent of the speed of the sled except that possibly higher speed might heat up the blades. The direction of the frictional force is in the direction opposite of the velocity.
Aerodynamic force is proportional to the velocity of the sled and is also directed in the direction opposite of the velocity. It depends on the shape of the sled, etc. but has nothing to do with the weight of the system.
When the sum of the frictional and drag forces is equal to the component of the gravity force in the direction of travel (mg times the sine of the slope), the sled will travel at a constant velocity. When the gravity force is greater it will accelerate until the forces balance. When the drag force is greater it will decelerate.
Clue: When the mass increases the gravitational FORCE increases. So does the friction force (in the case of the sled), but not the drag force. Also, a heavier sled will have more momentum (mv) at the start. We'll cover that in a later lesson.
