The Battle

Post by poptart »

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers,
against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Original man had God's Word in the center of his heart.
We left this Word and the result is that we placed created things in our hearts.
Think about yourself.

People are SO anxious and full of worry and discontent.
We think we can manage a way to make things better, to have things work out, to find the happiness we so desperately want to have.
But the created things we grasp for all crumble, and inevitably so.

Man was made to live by the grace of the Creator.
Apart from this is death, spiritual death - Genesis 2:17.

Spiritual death signifies the state of the person who has not met God.

The ruler of this world drags him around, causes all manner of suffering, and then takes him to complete separation from God for eternity.

It's a heartbreaking scenario.

Because we are totally powerless against the onslaught, God promised and delivered complete restoration through Christ.

There is no other method.

Just believe it and take it, and it is FINISHED.

2nd commandment
You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth
so would all of those velvet paintings of jesus qualify as "graven images"?

It's not just you, Felix, it's where we've all gone.

That's why the world is such a strange place full of strange people.

The 2nd commandment that you cited was cut short there.
God warned against bowing down to idols.

This is in line with our conversation here.
When you "bow down" - put those things in your heart in place of God, you undoubtedly come under a very harmful influence of satan.

Heartbreakingly, such is the world and such are people.

straight up bullshit....the thing I hold closest is family and friends

The 2nd commandment that you cited was cut short there.
God warned against bowing down to idols.
that's the second sentence, but the first one was complete.....don't make images of things in heaven....so what am I missing here?

Felix, your friends and family are created things.

Exodus 20:2-5
2: I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3: Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

God is the only God.
Don't make idols (something to put your heart and/or worship into other than God).
Don't bow down to idols.

There is nothing wrong with having a picture of Jesus.
If the picture is an idol, that's a pretty big problem.

From the spiritual to the carnal, we all believe in one thing or another, we all settle for something which we are willing to place are faith in.
For my taste - Bob Dylan did a real good job of explaining it with this:
(Yeah, I know - by you, Bob Dylan is a faggot's faggot.
But for the sake of argument, just pretend for a second that in your world, believers are allowed to express their point of view.)

It's not generally the kind of thing that goes down, but yes, sure, Felix, I would throw one of my children in front of a bus if GOD ordered me to.

Exodus 3:14
13: And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14: And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Mvscal, I AM has called me to relay His Word to you.

You can take it or leave it.

Sam - understand that I am not saying I would toss my child in front of a bus because I think God told me to.

I would do so if God DID tell me to do so.

Surely you're not here to say that a judge is to be held in higher regard than the One who created him?

Mvscal, Felix' question is goofy.
But he asked a question and it's polite to give a genuine reply to it.

God's not going to be asking me to toss my child in front of a bus or any such thing.

Zeus and Odin never did anything to demonstrate that they are God.

Jesus, who is the Christ, surely did.

You can deny that if you choose to.

Seriously:
Yes, we agree - As of now, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Btw - G-d also promised that there would be an end to iniquity.

he asked plenty of people in the old testament to do just such a thing....or are those parts of the bible parts we're supposed to be ignoring now? in modern times, christian zealots can justify just about anything (blowing up abortion clinics and the assassination of abortion doctors) if they believe god is speaking to them...I can envision a scenario where some antiabortion nutjob kills his son/daughter because they legally perform abortions....

really? all we have is third, fourth, fifth and sixth hand accounts of what this person was to have alleged to have done and documented in only one manuscript that has been shown time and time again to be fraught with errors and inconsistencies....

Not ignoring.
Basic understanding would be good.

You're flailing, Felix.

Jesus death and resurrection was a fulfillment of God's plan and a fulfillment of much prophecy of such.

It signalled an end to many things that necessarily went on in Old Testament times.

in modern times, christian zealots can justify just about anything (blowing up abortion clinics and the assassination of abortion doctors) if they believe god is speaking to them...I can envision a scenario where some antiabortion nutjob kills his son/daughter because they legally perform abortions....
Interesting info, but it has nothing at all to do with the discussion.

I don't support mayhem done by people who think God has told them to cause such harm.

I support giving people the Word of Life, so that they can be taken out of the certain destruction that awaits them.

I don't. Your Bible does. Believe in God or go to hell. It's a pretty straight forward concept though I have noticed that Christians and other religious nutters have a bottomless capacity for self-deception which makes intellectual honesty and logical reasoning problematic.

What do I have to be scared of? You, Johnny, are the one who's scared.

I don't have to be threatened with eternal damnation in order to treat people right and to be honest and decent. You're weak.

God doesn't demand us to be upright and good.

He gave us the Gospel because we are spiritaully captured within satan's hand.
We are powerless.

Through belief in Christ, we have freedom.

This is the method God gave for us.

John 6:29
Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Apart from this, goodness and works can not solve a person's fundamental spiritual problem.
Everyone, without exception, will fail entirely.
