Not sure about Terry, but Aparicio's last year with the Orioles was when I was one year old. Growing up, the only shortstop the Orioles had was great field, zero hit Mark Belanger.

Fail.

Either you consider age 17 to be All Grown Up or you're posting posthumously...The Ripper broke in against the Royals in '81.

Ripken was a late call up in 81. He spent most of that season in Rochester, where he also autographed a Red Wings team picture for me. It wasn't until the 82 season that Belanger was let go and Ripken took over. If you want to nitpick, whatever. I had a drivers license by that time.

That was an eephus pitch--in the original sense, of course, from the treasonous lunatic.

He's wearing shoes with good tread, and he plants very carefully. Remember the opening of W?

Of course he planted carefully, he's probably been on a mound before. Not epic, but it was a pretty good pitch for the ceremony type of thing.

Even Clinton threw a hell of an ephus, but he still through it like he a damn male. Not a strike like W's, but at least he made a point not to embarrass himself out there. He looked like he has at least played catch before.

Clinton and Bush are also huge baseball fans.

Obama claims to be a fan like Bush and Clinton, but he throws like he's never seen a baseball and filibusters his way out of actually talking about his love for his favorite team.

When it comes to showing this side of his carefully crafted image, he shows that he is full of shit. That was the point of this thread. I'm not going to doubt that his March Madness bracket looked better than mine though.

Pretty much what I was getting at. Born in 1964, so it stands to reason that I'd remember Aparicio's stint with the Red Sox (1971-73) better than his stint with the Orioles (1963-67) or even his second stint with the White Sox (1968-70).

Interesting that you write that, when . . .
Earlier in the same thread, Terry in Crapchester wrote:That said, I seem to recall Dick Allen (he changed it to Dick from Richie when he joined the White Sox) and Bill Melton both leading the AL in homers as White Sox, and Wilbur Wood winning 20 and losing 20 in the same season with the White Sox, when I was a kid. For some strange reason, I also remember having a baseball card of someone named Rich Morales when he played for the White Sox.

And later . . .
Terry in Crapchester wrote:Obama's a few years older than me, though, so perhaps he could remember [Aparicio's] second stint with the White Sox.
The reason I don't remember it, of course, is that I wasn't yet six years old when he played his final game with the White Sox. Obama would've been nine years old then. And I never claimed to be a White Sox fan.

But in any event, couple points . . .

First, if NatsFan didn't enjoy Opening Day, it seems that perhaps Obama isn't the person NatsFan ought to vent his anger against. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_le ... mlb,232653

Second, as long as he can avoid the sort of train wreck that his predecessor could not, I really don't care who his favorite baseball team is, or how long he's been a fan. But that's just the way I roll.
Jesus. If you claim to be such a fan, not that hard to name one fucking favorite player from back in the day. He's not a true South Sider anyway.
Fwiw, I believe Obama became a White Sox (to me, Sox means Red Sox) fan sometime between the time he decided to marry Michelle and make his home in Chicago, and the time he decided to run for elected office and represent the people of Chicago. In that regard, it's not worlds apart from Hillary Clinton putting on a Yankees cap when she decided to run for the Senate in New York.

Not to mention that Ripken originally came up as a 3B. In fact, IIRC, the Orioles traded their incumbent 3B, Doug DeCinces, to the Angels for Dan Ford, in order to make room for Ripken in the lineup. Ripken didn't move to SS until later in the '82 season, or maybe it was even '83.

But I also think Kiko Garcia was the Orioles' starting SS for awhile around late 70's -- early 80's.

Terry, I'm well aware Kasten and the Lerners completely torpedoed any semblance of an enjoyable day for Nationals fans from the get-go. That fact has not been lost on me one bit and has been covered ad nauseum in major media outlets and Mark Zuckerman's blog.
