And it was money well spent, unlike the 500 billion floated to keep the likes of AIG, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, BoA, Goldman Sachs, etc. solvent while they paid their top execs million dollar bonuses.

Sounds like GM's claim that it's paid back some of the money is a creative accounting ploy. Maybe that's bullshit, but it doesn't piss me off nearly as bad as the fucks on Wall St. plungering the entire world economy with collateral debt swaps, wiping their cocks on the drapes, and then coming back for more like pigs at the trough.

Say what you will of GM, at least they're providing good jobs and have plans to hire another 160,000 workers.

Yeah, that 50 billion was well spent, even if they never pay back a dime of it.

my biggest problem with the auto bailout is the way the unions got moved to the head of the line and the secured debt holders (bonds) were told to GFY. they completely ignored long standing bankruptcy law.

That's weird, I thought there was a risk of a complete systematic failure in the national economy. The domino effect can be percieved, not just as a practical reality, confidence is everything - after all it was the speculators who drove up the price of petrol and pulled the trigger on the automakers.

Like it or not, there are lessons to be learned from the collapse of the Soviet Union. The interconnectedness of the economy couldn't stand the removal of a few key money losing institutions, when they were dissolved - something was supposed to magically show up and replace them (the invisible hand?), but nothing ever did.
