When my wife and I came to Korea four years ago we leased out our house - $1300 a month.
Rather than set up an EFT with the leasee, we set things up for the leasee to mail his monthly payments to my wife's brother.
Her brother lived near our bank and it was easy for him to drop by the bank and simply make the deposit each month.
We left a stack of deposit slips with our account number on them with him.

All is cool.

6 or 8 months pass and ... one month there is no deposit made.
I waited a week-or-so - and then emailed the leasee, assuming he somehow didn't make payment.
He said he had mailed the payment as usualm and didn't know what the problem was.

So my wife contacted her brother to ask him about it.
He told her he had run into a money problem and "had" to use our $1300.

Me: ummmm ...

In the first place, I have NO idea how he even cashed the check at the bank because the check was not in HIS name.
WTF?

Ok, I immediately contacted the leasee and made arrangements to have him make electronic payments from then on.

My wife, speaking to me, was like, "You have to understand Korea people. A Family member can think that it's ok to do something like this with another family member."

Me: :?

He didn't even fuckin' ASK us if he could "use" our money.
Not only that, he didn't even think he needed to tell us he took our money.

It happened that I visited America a couple months after this happened and I saw the dickbag.
As soon as he met me he was all friendly and apologetic, like, "I'm sorry, I had a money problem. I'm going to put your money back soon, yada, yada ..."
I was like, "Ok, yes, do that."

Three years later, not word one from dickbag about when he's going to give us our $1300 back.

Hey, blow it off.
What's $1300 to a guy like me?

It's NOT the money.
It's the IDEA that a guy would be such an uber douche to pull a stunt like that and then proceed as if it has never happened.

But he's ... family.

Now I find out today that he's going to visit Korea.
He's not staying with us, but I KNOW I am going to see him when he's here.


What should I do?

a) nothing, just let it pass - he's family
b) put a threatening note on his windshield
c) beat his @ss
d) ask him where my $1300 is
e) turn the other cheek - give him a blank check and say, "Thank you, sir, may I have another?"
f) other - explain

Ask him for the money. The family angle is bullshit. Sure family obligations might require you to lend him the money if you are able, but honor demands that he pay it back.

Invite him to commit seppuku if he is unable to pay the money back within 90 days or, failing that, put his kneecaps on backwards. No wonder the Japs hate the Koreans...no honor among the Garlic Eaters.

Hey, if he had a money problem and would have wanted to borrow money from us, I could get with that program.
I could even GIVE him money, as he is family, if need be.

But by his actions, he showed that he was not interested in borrowing money from us, or even interested in seeing if we might give him some money.

He was interested in stealing from us.

There is no other way for me to look at it at this time.

Did that to a guy i know. Backstory was, his father had died in past 6months, his accountant who handled the trust fund, had stole 3/4 of his money, and on his B-day, i gave him one of the fake tickets from Spencers. He scratched it, started to tear up, thanked god, said his troubles and the bad times were over, and hugged us all. My buddies kept trying to get me to tell him the truth, but the fact that he was crying and actually believing it was real, was too god, i was going to soak it up for as long as i could. Then after being almost lynched, i told the guy, he stood there in shock, he tried to kick my ass. It is still one of my most memorable moments. Spencers used to have some real good fake scratchers, last time i looked, they were shitty.

Side note which I neglected to even mention in my post to open the thread:

!5 months prior to leaving for Korea, I had bought a new little Hyundai Elantra.
When I left for Korea (10 months before BiL pulled his stunt), insead of selling the car, which had less than 15,000 miles on it, I GAVE it to BiL - because he needed wheels.

GAVE a pretty much new car to him - maybe worth around $10,000 - rather than sell it.

Then 10 months later he gave me his thank you. har


Probably my mistake, as he obviously took that to mean that whatever is mine is ... HIS.
