For m2oodles

Post by Terry in Crapchester »

Yeah, I know he was banned/run from here some time ago, but I just came across this and couldn't help but think of him:

Football graduation rates for BCS schools

Wasn't he the one constantly running academic smack? Bragging about how smart Cal players were? Even offering, as an excuse for Cal's 4 losses en route to a national championship season, that the players had to spend more time studying than at other schools?

So where did all this studying get the Cal football players? Lessee, it looks like their graduation rate is . . .

Wait for it . . .

53%

Yeah, I know that the graduation rate for football players is hardly the only, or even the most important, criterion for assigning academic merit to a particular institution, but . . .

53%????!!!!

And once again, we're not lauging with you.

When you claim a national championship every time someone farts on the sidelines, yeah maybe ONE of those teams did have a better percentage.

m2/troll claimed that every player for Cal had a 3.4 or better GPA. only about half the All Pac 10 team had GPA's that high, so it was easily disproved.

yeah, Tech surprised me too. However, having worked closely with student-athletes and seeing the "tutoring" up close....there's a lot that depends on expectations and what the Academic Support Centers like to call "working together to build community and team-building in the program"...which is basically cheating and farming out work on a division of labor type deal and then sharing answers among "team members". but that was under Barnett and Hawkins has done a much better job on that front. what i'm saying is that you never know what is required in some cases. do they have Jim Harrick Jr. type "theory of basketball" type classes and give credit for PE and shit? but, if the Pirate was getting it done in the classroom, good for him.

and here's Texas fan weighing in down in the comments:

"Geaux Tigers0107
According to Texas Monthly Magazine Nov 08 edition
UT-Austin is a top-rated school U.S. News and World Report 2009 list ranked it 15th out of 68 public universities-There are no special majors for atheletes, as there have been at Auburn and Michigan. Widely circulated NCAA data showing abysmal graduation rates for UT atheletes last in the Big 12 were simply inaccurate. 88 % of all Longhorn atheletes who complete their NCAA eligibility graduate. That compares with a campus-wide rate of 75%. For the 2006-2007 year the football team led the Big12, with 40 players earning 3.0 average or better. The basketball team had a perfect score this year and all of its players remained eligible and on track to graduate.{ the team as a whole had a 3.3 GPA"

1. Texas is being wrongly accused and the other guy cheats (Aubie and UM)....check.
2. undermines argument in self-same post.....but doesn't realize it....check.
3. cites friendly, local source to "disprove" otherwise impartial set of statistical evidence....check.
4. Texas is such a great school it's just too damned hard (probably even harder than Duke, Vandy or NW combined!)....check.
5. sounding a lot like m2 re: the basketball team....check. (if the team average GPA was 3.3 over half the team would have been academic all-conference (automatic at 3.2)....i'm not going to look it up but i doubt it's true).

yeah, yeah...OU's % is even worse. and I think that's unacceptable (which is different than lining up the excuses).

little surprised to see Cincy so high. can't remember who, but someone pointed out last year that UC had made a real commitment to academics in the post-Huggins era. Respect. and must have factored into the Kelly hire at ND.

little surprised to see G Tech so low. that's hard to read for me given the overall high % of the ACC and G Tech being a very demanding school.

Oregon at 53%.

If you factor in that 46% were kicked off the team, that works out to about 99.5% of guys who are actually there getting degrees.

Texas doesn't have "athlete" majors? WTF is "Kinesiology (Non-teaching)"?
Fancy name for being a PE major.
