Anybody here use Priceline? How does it work?
We're going to a show on Saturday at the Hollywood Bowl and will be shuttling from Santa Monica. Would like to find a nice hotel to stay at near or on Ocean Avenue but they are all big bucks. How does Priceline work? Can I put in a bid on Saturday morning and get a room for $150 or something? If we can't find anything reasonable then we'll just drive home.

If you ever come to Canada Mikey, forget Priceline. You are always welcome at our compound and there'll be a
(somewhat) clean sleeping bag ready for you.

I have used it, and yes, you better damn well know you are going. They absolutely will not allow ANY changes. A few years back we had to eat a plane ticket bought for my mom to fly up over christmas. She had to change her flight by one day, but, the fukkers wouldn't budge.

I've used hotwire for hotels for several years. It's not "name your own $", but the prices are generaly discounted 40% or more.
I've had some outstanding deals from them in Vegas. Best ever was a $400+/night resort room with a sliding door that opened to an indoor creek/arboretum...for $70.

The longer you are willing to wait to get a hotel, the better the Name Your Own Price works. Before I moved here, I booked a hotel room in downtown DC near McPherson Square for $100 on the same day. In 2002, I got a hotel room at 52nd and 3rd in Midtown Manhattan for $100 as well. Obviously that was a long time ago, but it can work.
Re: Priceline
Yep, same for Hotwire.
Last weekend while on the way to Jamestown to pan for gold with my son, I pulled over and booked a room on Wi-Fi when I got tired of driving. Got a room at Holiday Inn Express for $65.
