Our New Baby

Post by Mikey »

After 10 years I finally broke down.

It's an all day job to mow about 2/3 of an acre of weeds with a push mower. Last Saturday I did it in about an hour, with the weeds about waist high. Next week probably half that time.

Sam, your thoughts?

My brothers husky mower was burning oil pretty good till he figured out it had a blown head gasket. Be proactive and check your oil level every time before you mow.

That things a beast.

Takes about 10 minutes to douse them with a hose-end sprayer.... which costs about $12.

I got it at our local outlet, L&M Fertilizer and Power Equipment.

http://www.landmpower.com/home.htm

They carry everything from small string trimmers to John Deere tractors. Being in an agrucultural area there's a market for a lot of that stuff. When I was over there a guy was driving a huge tree stumper around the parking lot with a hand-held remote. My Husky was actually the smallest rider that they had in stock at the time, but just about right for my needs.

I learned quite a while ago that it's best to stick with this place for power equipment, because they handle all warranty work in-house. Also, from what I've heard the Sears warranty isn't quite what it used to be.

Uhm...

I think you meant to say Husqvarna... Husky is an entirely different tool company.

Unless things have changed radically recently -- Sears is about the biggest price-whore out there.

Most of their power equipment is MTD. Matter of fact, just about any power equipment with a store brand (particularly mowers) is made by MTD (who I believe merged with White). I believe their riders (or many of them) are AYD, which is part of Husqvarna.

Craftsman also buys from Troybuilt, Poulan, and a host of others.

Just my (overpriced) $0.02, but Cub makes the best riders, but are ridiculously priced; Honda probably makes the best ones for the money.

Jives, jibes... whatever.

I'n not really sure that their arraingement is exclusive -- I wouldn't be suprised if some models are still MTD (world's largest mower manufacturer, which means they can probably do it cheaper, which is what Sears cares about).

I think they still have deals with Kohler, too (although it's quite possible Kohler is now part of AYD/ Husqvarna).

I knew there was much merging these days, and though Weedeater became part of McCulloch some time ago, but I didn't realize Husqvarna scooped up McCulloch.

It means "in agreement," or close enough.

And althought it's been many years since I've been on a sailboat (pretty common hobby around these parts), "to jibe" is to take multiple tacks, shifting angles back and forth, which is the only way a sailboat can go into the wind.

You tack with the jib in order to jibe -- those whacky sailing folk.

Since you can't fly a spinnaker into the wind.

Husqvarna uses Kohler and Briggs & Stratton engines in their riders. Pretty sure Kohler isn't part of the company though.

The one I bought has a 21 HP Kohler with a 46 inch cutting width. Pretty much the lower end of the Husqvarna line, but plenty for my needs.

The hydrostatic transmission makes it very easy to operate.

Dins, you gotta hold it in reserve. Don't unholster it until you're stumbling drunk and slurring like Cinder. Then it would be devastatingly funny to any fortunate onlookers.

So, yeah, wait until tonight.

I was thinking how I just received an "inappropriate post" email from another board I post on because I called someone a douchebag. Wonder how "Naturally the invitation to correct the hideously warped genetic spin cycle which tumbled from your mother's battered fish kettle remains open." would be received there?

And no, I won't tell you where that board is. I hope PSU's spy software didn't track me there.

Nice mower, Mikey. And since we're talking mowers, I just bought one of these with bagger. I found out early on in the lawn care business that a top of the line mower will save you time and provide a superior cut. I bought a Dixon ZTR with a 22 HP Briggs that just wasn't up to the task for commercial mowing. The Gravely mower should do the trick. For the cost, it had better.

Love my rig. I have a Craftsman 42" deck rider. When I bought my current home about a year and a half ago, I did my first mow with the craftsman rider. Took 3 hours. I said no fucking way. Went to the lawn and garden place and they had these commercial Grasshopper mowers. He let me borrow one for a couple weeks. Took less than an hour to mow the 3 acres. I was sold. I got the front-mount mower. Really good for getting under trees. I also bought the scoop attachment to plow snow. Worked awesome this past winter. Next I'm going to get a blade and a grass clipping catcher. They make a snow blower attachment, but it is kinda pricey at $1300 for just an attachment.
