Mace wrote:Nice mower, Mikey. And since we're talking mowers, I just bought one of these with bagger. I found out early on in the lawn care business that a top of the line mower will save you time and provide a superior cut. I bought a Dixon ZTR with a 22 HP Briggs that just wasn't up to the task for commercial mowing. The Gravely mower should do the trick. For the cost, it had better.
Nice rig there Mace. I guess you can spin fast tight circles on that thing and get all dizzy and stuff.

Considering how long Gravely has been making them, they've probably got it down by now.
Used to know a guy who collected the old walk-behind tractors.

Love my rig. I have a Craftsman 42" deck rider. When I bought my current home about a year and a half ago, I did my first mow with the craftsman rider. Took 3 hours. I said no fucking way. Went to the lawn and garden place and they had these commercial Grasshopper mowers. He let me borrow one for a couple weeks. Took less than an hour to mow the 3 acres. I was sold. I got the front-mount mower. Really good for getting under trees. I also bought the scoop attachment to plow snow. Worked awesome this past winter. Next I'm going to get a blade and a grass clipping catcher. They make a snow blower attachment, but it is kinda pricey at $1300 for just an attachment.

Unfortunately for Zy I enforce a 36" height requirement.
Re: Our New Baby
I like my Dixon mower (54" deck/22 hp Briggs) but it's not quite up to the task of commercial mowing of some of my mowing accounts. A friend of mine in the lawn care business highly recommended buying a Gravely mower (he has five of them, plus an ExMark) and says that the Gravely and ExMarks are the very top of the line in ZTR mowers. My Gravely has a 60" deck and a 29 hp Kohler engine. I pick it up tomorrow and am anxious to take it out on the job. The bagger is actually a hopper that I can unload from the seat of the mower and will save a lot of time, which translates to getting to the next job quicker and providing a better looking lawn for my customers. It also means that I can probably take on twice as many customers. My newest account is a rich couple from West Des Moines who purchased 40 acres in southern Iowa for their personal campground. They built a large pond with a big dock, have a lot of timber on the 40 acres, but I only have to mow about 2 acres around their camping area.

Wait just a minute. You SOLD riding mowers? Really? I hope to God you didn’t include any personal training.Sudden Sam wrote:My bad, Mace. I should have made it clearer that I meant as far as commercial cutting. We sold a ton of Dixons to residential accounts and heard very few complaints.Mace wrote:I like my Dixon mower (54" deck/22 hp Briggs) but it's not quite up to the task of commercial mowing of some of my mowing accounts.
But riding any Dixon after showing the other brands to customers was a comedown.
