Credit and ATM card Skimming

This is scary. Someone got a hold of my number last month. I use my debit card for gas, cash, groceries, shopping, etc. I normally don't have more than $800 in that account. I do use it for online purchases, but only at very well known sites, like drugstore.com or amazon. The bank caught the thieves right away. They were testing the number at some resort in OR. They charged $20 and somehow it flagged Wells Fargo right away. They changed my A/C number and sent me a new card.

I'm very hesitant to use my regular credit card that has a $12,000 limit. Anywhere.

Why don't the banks simply train tellers what to look for and have them go out every half hour or so and check the ATM for devices or suspicious activity? I had my debit card skimmed a couple years ago, and I think it was some "kids" as they used it for some Netflix and restaurant coupon booklets. I check my BOA account daily and caught it in time. Be alert.

Credit cards offer more protection than your debit card, you know this, right? Your debit card gets ripped, your money is gone and you have to fight to get it back. Credit card? That's not your money.

Lately I've been carrying quite a bit of cash on me for this very reason.

Not only that, but it's a helluva lot easier to balance the check book when you only have 3 to 4 transactions every two weeks.

I'm thinking that in this climate, with the economy on the verge of collapsing and uncertainty everywhere, gold is the way to go. It soon may be the only acceptable currency.

My money was not "gone" when my debit card was skimmed. I paid for nothing they charged. I use it all the time and seldom carry more than $25 in cash. If the economy really collapses and/or goes into a spiral of hyperinflation, we are all screwed. I worry more about some jackass sending me to the morgue in a car crash.
