Indiana is the most fucked up state in the nation, even more so than Mississippi, Louisiana, et al. No other state takes more pride in being backwards, prehistoric, averse to the times, which is exactly what the Indiana Excise Police are: a prohibition-era bureaucracy that has out lived its usefulness and exists as nothing but a revenue generating machine.

This story happens every fucking summer. ND players busted drinking, and not only busted, they fucking ARRESTED them. I've never understood the necessity of arresting underage people for drinking. Dear Indiana pigs: It's called discretion. Try using it for once in your lives.

who gives a fuck, you princess. they're so inbred but you're concerned they're wagging their fingers at you? do they actually tell you you can't buy beer, or do they just mumble under their breath before ringing you up?

the most important thing about buying beer in indiana is there's less of a state tax surcharge on them then any state i've been in. a poor, unemployed michigan vagrant can get twice as many beers in indiana as he could manage at home with his unemployment check. (then again, i haven't bought beer in indiana since 2001. maybe things have changed.)

Not really. When it comes to booze, the only difference between IN and MI is the fact there is no deposit in Indiana. The prices are basically the same. Well, except you can buy booze on Sundays in MI and during elections, which IN just got around to changing because they still think they're in the age where thugs are using booze to buy votes (evidence A on why IN relishes its prehistoric culture). Trust the guy who used to drive up to Niles to buy booze on Sundays.

Indiana's whole catch phrase of "we have fewer taxes" is the biggest joke in America. I'll retire in Indianapolis, if they're lucky.

Indiana also doesn't allow grocery stores to sell cold beer. Fuck Indiana.

eh, either things have changed recently or i bought warm beer. oregon's rough as well, at least w/r/t liquor. can only buy at government-controlled liquor stores that close at 7.00 pm. i think washington state has similar laws.

north carolina has the state-owned places for hard liquor. they are called ABC's and they are stocked about 70% with aisles of bourbon. but, you can buy wine and beer at the grocery store.

1. Screwball is kind of right about cold beer in Indiana. Grocery stores only sell it warm. You can buy it cold at liquor stores though...for $1 more per case.

2. The no beer sales on Sundays does suck. In Texas, you can't buy liquor on Sundays, but you could still buy beer and wine if you want to get your drink on.

3. Not sure about the rest of the state, but the county I live in does not allow beer/wine/liquor sales on any election day until 6 PM when the polls close.

All that being said, Indiana's liquor laws aren't that bad. You want to know a fucked up law? Utah. Can't "pour" alcohol on Sundays. So what do bars do? They "pour" individual shots on Saturdays, stack them on trays and sell to people "shots". If you want a Jack and Coke, they give you a coke and a shot of Jack poured yesterday and you can pour it in yourself.

Yes, I believe it was Elkhart County that just got around to changing that law. I know it was the same in St. Joe County when I lived in SB.

there's also something about not being allowed to double fist, which in practice means you can't order a pitcher unless enough people are at the table to have a glass each.

then again, this is just something that's been related to me by friends in utah, and you know how people are interpreting the law via heresay. the only thing i've ever drunk in utah is the oregon microbrew i drove in with.

Unfortunately, that AOL Fanhouse report didn't exactly tell the entire story. Looks like a huge fight went down. Even when I was in school, I never understood why people would run when the cops showed up. Maybe it was because we weren't worried about getting arrested, just an MIP summons at worst. But if you acted like you were 21, you usually were OK. Nothing grabs the attention of and pisses off the police more than people running.

Indiana still sucks.
City may take action against 'hockey house' turned party house

By DIANE DANIELS
WSBT-TV Report

SOUTH BEND — The city attorney for South Bend, Chuck Leone, says he is seriously looking at issuing a "letter of abatement" against the owner and property management company that oversees the student rental at 1017 East Washington.

That was the location of a weekend party that erupted into fistfights. According to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor, when police got on the scene, glass was breaking and people were trying to run away from officers by jumping out of second-story windows.

Among the 42 people arrested for underage drinking were Nate Montana, the son of famous Notre Dame great Joe Montana, and Tim Abromaitis of the Notre Dame basketball team. More than two dozen Notre Dame student athletes representing at least 10 university sports ended up behind bars.

Leone says that a letter of abatement relies on the city's disorderly house ordinance which requires owners to be responsible for what happens on their property. It would essentially put the property's owner (Gross & Cohen of Massachusetts) and the property management company (Campus Apartments of Pennsylvania) on notice that they could be liable for substantial fines if there are further problems at 1017 East Washington.

The house is known as a "hockey house."

"It's been the hockey house for many years and the hockey team comes back to that particular home. I was involved in leasing it to the current tenants," said Mark Kramer of Kramer Property Management in South Bend.

Just as a follow up, here are the football players, their age and their BAC:

Chris Watt, 19, .12
Tai-ler Jones, 18, .07
Nick Tausch, 20, .10
Robbie Toma, 19, .04
Lorenzo Wood, 19, .03
Nate Montana, 20, .07
Steve Filer, 20, .06
Tate Nichols, 18, .11

The legal limit (for a 21 year old) in Indiana is .08. 3 kids were over the legal limit, but all were under age. My only guess as to why Jones, Wood and Filer weren't over the limit was because they ran out of purple drank to mix with the cough syrup

The legal limit (for a 21-year old) behind the wheel in Indiana is .08. I'm assuming Indiana has a similar zero-tolerance law like Michigan, where anything over .02 for minors is considered in possession of alcohol. Not debating the ethics, just the facts.

That's what I meant by the "all were under age" line, but it was poorly conveyed on my part. As soon as all of these kids took a sip of alcohol, they were fucked, legally. And I'm not up on my alcohol laws, but isn't the .08 not just for operating motor vehicles, but also the level they use when considering things like "drunk and disorderly"?

The legendary Barbur Liquor (at Capitol Highway, just down the street from PCC) stays open until 10:30 (summer hours). Right off I-5.

If you wanna see some sweet ass stunt driving, park in the lot next door at about 10:20 on a friday night -- some of the moves people make getting through the door on time are priceless.

From what I understand.....which is not much about anything. States have zero tolerance laws which means it's illegal for a minor to possess or have any amount of alcohol on their breath. Therefore all are guilty of MIP which is minor in possession. Now they could go find a good U$C lawyer and say we were all taking breath spray because we had hamburgers with onions and we wanted to make our breath smell better.
