In our state paramedics have to complete a 4 year schooling program...NY different.?..but maybe dude did do the 4 years and get the degree.
Here's the requirements for NYC.
* Be at least 18 years of age
* A valid NYS DOH EMS-Paramedic Certificate
* High School Diploma or equivalent
* A motor vehicle driver’s license valid in NY State (Does not require a NYS Driver’s license; a valid driver’s license from another state is OK so long as you have not lost driving privileges in NYS (For example, due to outstanding fines or judgments, etc.)
Note also the rather piss poor salaries. You couldn't get a college graduate for what they pay EMTs and Paramedics. That's the same upstate. EMTs around here get in the area of 9-10 dollars an hour. My cube mate in my old job considered being a paid EMT. But after he saw the pay scale, he chose to volunteer instead. He figured that way he wouldn't feel like he was getting raped.

EMT under payment is just about criminal. These are people who's competence results in people living or not living on a regular basis. IMO, they should be paid better than cops. Paramedics tend to do a little better, but, their education is more comparable to an RN. I suppose this is the case due to the number of volunteer organizations that do it.

You don't even get a sniff of a fire fighting job out west here unless you have a paramedic certificate that takes you 4 years and a lot of time and money. Most new hire fire fighters have to be a certified paramedic in addition to the firefighting portion, since over 70% of the calls are for EMS services. Not like the old days of EMS when I came up back in the late 70's early 80's...nailed an EMT II in about 12 weeks of class 2 nights a week. Paramedic / FF out here makes at least 45K to 48K starting and tops out around 62K or so...
One of my boys is a FF II, and EMT Basic, but with out that paramedic certificate, he is having a hard time getting a full time gig. Lots of fill shift work, but nothing full time.
