Clarett back at OSU
Not sure how I feel about this one. On one hand it's nice to see a guy try to better himself and get his shit together. On the other hand...what the fuck!!!!???? The dude has a rap sheet longer than a Dinsdale post and is a convicted felon. I don't remember any questions on a college application regarding convictions but his problems are well known. If I were him I may have chosen a different school.

Re: Clarett back at OSU
Wow, it's been that long. Usually you only hear these kinds of stories about ex-cons returning to campus at Michigan.
Obviously winning the 2002 national title still pulls a lot of weight for an ex-con. Why would you expect Clarett to go anywhere else, but OSU? Probably gets drinks bought for him and he basically can't go anywhere in Ohio without everyone knowing who he is. Hopefully he keeps his fucking nose clean.
I agree, no Big 11 schools should allow a convicted violent felon on campus, at least until he fulfills two years or an equal amount of credits at a community college or smaller school.

Re: Clarett back at OSU
Tressel is playing a part in getting him back into school. Apparently, he stayed in contact with Clarett during his state-sponsored hiatus.
Tressel supports Clarett's return
As long as Clarett isn't involved with the FB program, this stays a non-issue.
Tressel supports Clarett's return
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel yesterday made it clear that he has been, and will continue to be, one of Maurice Clarett's biggest supporters.
Clarett started taking classes Monday at OSU, the scene of so many of the former running back's triumphs and troubles.
Tressel has kept in touch with Clarett through the years, through his arrest and eventual time in prison for robbery and weapons charges. He was released in April.
"We've been working for about the last three months, trying to get the I's dotted and the T's crossed and get him back in (to OSU) and moving toward a degree," Tressel said. "In fact, he just told me (yesterday) after his first day of class (Monday), he said he woke up at 4:30 and he grabbed his book and just started studying.
"He was excited. He says he's going to do well, and he said it's just so neat for him to be back in the classroom."
Tressel said it was rewarding to see the troubled former player make a positive step.
"It's what you hope for," he said. "We all make mistakes, and some are different mistakes than others. But there are always consequences for whatever the mistake is, and if you take care of that, usually the world is a forgiving world and gives you an opportunity - if you'll do the right things - to move forward, and that's what he's trying to do."
While many OSU fans still harbor strong negative feelings about Clarett, who accused the football program of committing NCAA violations, Tressel does not.
"Anytime someone is part of your life, even if it doesn't go well, when (he tries) to get it squared away, you've got to continue to be there for him," Tressel said. "That's just the way we do things."
As long as Clarett isn't involved with the FB program, this stays a non-issue.

Not a UM/OSU thing, just curious if felony convictions weigh into admissions decisions.

Steve...excellent point...I would be curious on that as well...
but it could be part of his parole or whatever to work toward a degree? I think it's great that if he is committed and stays the course good for him...he has a lot riding on this second chance...

He's going to fuck up. If anyone else has to be hurt because of this stain, hope it is the vest that brought him back.

kind of wondering the same thing....i know that admissions at Colorado does perfunctory background checks for some stuff which may weigh in a decision. i would imagine that felonies would qualify. Since Va Tech shooting (and others)...WolverineSteve wrote:

Re: Clarett back at OSU
The Michigan part was of course a cheap shot by me. But if you can't get credits from a fucking community college transferred to a 4-yr school, why the fuck should PRISON classes transfer?M Club wrote:i think he was taking college courses while in prison.Screw_Michigan wrote: I agree, no Big 11 schools should allow a convicted violent felon on campus, at least until he fulfills two years or an equal amount of credits at a community college or smaller school.
And violent ex-felons should not be allowed on campus, nevertheless be allowed to immediately matriculate. I'm assuming Clarett is on parole right now. He's still under court supervision and thus should not be allowed on campus. This is a public safety issue.

i don't have the faintest re: the logistics of this case. was just throwing that bit of info out there in response to your comment about credits.
since when don't credits from a community college transfer to a four-year institution? people go that route all the time.

Re: Clarett back at OSU
I guess it depends on your degree program you are going into at the 4-yr and what classes you took at the CC. Obviously welding classes aren't going to transfer, but even people going from 4-yr to 4-yr lose credits all the time. Friend of mine is transferring to GW from WMU to finish his bachelor's and he's losing about 20 credits in the shuffle.M Club wrote:since when don't credits from a community college transfer to a four-year institution? people go that route all the time.
Re: Clarett back at OSU
ja, i meant to say i know some credits won't transfer, but for the most part your basic english comps and other 101s should. i guess it depends on how dick the receiving institution is as well.

One dog eating student did more grave damage in one fell swoop than all the convicted felons who are eligible to be on a college campus combined.*

Apparently they don't at Ole Miss...
Who will soon be welcoming their new QB...
Jerimiah Masoli.
Oregon doesn't let the guy step foot on campus anymore, but Ole Miss is Nutting all over themselves to pick him up.

I guess it's different rules because he already has a degree. Some shit like if he studies in a postgrad program that Oregon doesn't offer, he's eligible... or some such shit.Carson wrote:[Sports talk radio here says he's eligible to play this season, too.

Re: Clarett back at OSU
i thought they closed that loophole a few years back, yet every year it seems like someone transfers into a graduate football curriculum or some shit.
i read somewhere that the sec doesn't allow scholarships to these sort of transfers unless the player sits out the year.

Cuz the SEC would hate to sully its academic reputation.

Masoli's family never came across as being of great financial means (not that I really have any knowledge, direct or even anectdotal, nor is it my business).
Yet he's hired a PR firm, set up a new website, and is really selling himself.
Sure, it's a wise move, since there's a small outside chance he could make a NFL career for himself (if Tebow can, Masoli can -- they're about the same player, except one faith-heals lepers, and one burns joints and shakes down old ladies). So maybe his family is willing to gamble the farm on his future earnings potential...
Or that money came from somewhere else.
Maybe playing CFB for Oregon pays better than I thought. If that's the case, props to the compliance department for making sure no one appears on some Pimp My Ride show, or flagrantly lives beyond their means (sup USC).

Re: Clarett back at OSU
UPDATE: So much for that bullshit.
(Yesterday) The NCAA formally denied a waiver request by Ole Miss to allow transfer quarterback Jeremiah Masoli to play football in 2010. Ole Miss says it will appeal the denial, but for the moment the former Oregon Ducks qb is unable to play college football this season for the Rebels.
The implications for Ole Miss are not dire, but they ain’t good, either. Masoli was going to be the likely starter for the Rebels, leaving redshirt sophomore Nathan Stanley and JUCO passer Randall Mackey battling for the starting job left open by the NCAA’s stiffarm of a waiver for Masoli.
Houston Nutt and Ole Miss AD Pete Boone will discuss the waiver denial at a press conference at 4:00 p.m. CDT.

Re: Clarett back at OSU
Yeah, I guess the dealio was that Masoli didn't technically "transfer," he enrolled at Ole Miss after being kicked out of Oregon.
If he had merely made a "traditional" transfer, he would have been eligible.
Maybe he can hand off the rock to Clarett?

To answer your question, I don't think they do. A drug conviction can have an effect on financial aid but, to my knowledge, there are no questions on admission forms concerning a criminal history.
