Chiefs Training Camp

So far I have been to training camp one time since the Chiefs brought training camp to St. Joe where I live. I have to say it's quite impressive to see the facilities the Chiefs, the tax payers and Missouri Western State University have put together. The very first night practice they had nearly 11,000 people in the stadium. Saturday they had family day and had another 10k plus turnout. Eric Berry is gonna be a friggin machine in the secondary. McCluster has had a pretty decent camp from all things I have been hearing except for yesterday when during punt return drills he dropped 3 in a row and had one fumble. Anxiously awaiting the first pre-season game.

I went up there last Saturday with my daughter, very nice facilities indeed though I could've done without having to climb all those stairs on the way out. Agreed on McCluster, dude is catching everything thrown his way (maybe not everything kicked). Not sold on Berry yet, but he's saying all the right things and staying late signing autographs for 20 minutes after practice is over. Seems like a solid kid all around, we'll see how he plays when it counts.

Great move bringing the Chiefs back to Missouri though the heat this year is brutal. Rack all TDOTRF making the trip up I-29. That scrimmage had the largest crowd ever to fill that stadium. Anyone who calls themselve a fan oughta' try to make it up at least once.

I took my son up there on Saturday to the Family Fun Day scrimmage, and it was PACKED. McCluster might be the fastest football player I've ever seen- they lined him up in the slot on pass plays, and he ALWAYS destroyed the guy covering him. Dude was SO wide open on almost every play, yet Cassel never threw his way...almost on purpose.

Eric Berry is the real deal, folks....he made a circus-type deflection of a Cassel pass to Chris Chambers on one play, coming out of nowhere to make the play. He later picked off a Cassel pass that initially looked to be an easy completion to Dwayne Bowe. Speaking of Bowe, dude just looks faster and more agile and physical against the Chiefs' DBs than I've ever seen him. Too early yet to tell if he's finally taking his day job seriously.

The only real downside to Saturday's scrimmage was the heat......MOTHERFUCKER it was hot! Outside temp read 102 degrees in my truck when the boy and I left to head back to KC.

The overall feel of this team is just better....good vibes with that great coaching staff, and their running game is going to be badass. Cassell has the potential to lead the way Grbac/Gannon/Bono/Green did for them. I'm not talking about him being one of the elite QBs, but just a dependable starter who piles up yardage and makes good decisions. Everyone in the world is picking San Diego to win the West, and that bodes well for KC. This could be their year.

The Chargers' sense of entitlement makes me laugh. I'm not saying I am picking the the Chiefs to win the West, I'm just giving some pre- preview of the division since the topis came up and we have an inside look at one of the clubs from within.

The Chargers' D-line is mediocre and so is their coach. This division is still a joke and it's one of the reasons that the Chargers have padded their regular season win totals in the last three years. Things will SLIGHTLY swing in terms of balance of power and I see KC making a push. WIth Crennel and Weis on hand, that combo has to count for something.

They're going to field a bottom-feeding defense once again and there is no way the offense is going to be nearly high-powered enough to overcome a defense which is giving up 27 pts a game.

The run game may be improved and Cassell may be more steady in year two, but I don't think he's anything special at all.

I see KC prolly winning between 6-8 games.

This makes me rethink a lot of what I said. They really don't have anything going for them on defense, and there's no reason to think it will be vastly improved. The Chargers will probably win the West if you think about it logically. I'm still working on a rough draft of my fearless forecast and this info will make my AFC west pick easier. But it's still hard to tell in todays league and parity

Preseason is precious time when you're among the dregs of the league, as KC, Oakland and Washington are.

When you look as inept as Oakland did on offense, or when you look as entirely out-of-sorts as KC did v. Atlanta, well, you realize you've got very little time to make it right and it's probably a very bad omen.

Sure, if you're among the best teams in the league, preseason can be a time where you just try to fine-tune some things and look at players for the future.

McCluster is going to be a WEAPON. Just call him Darren Sproles Jr. right about now. Jamaal Charles looked to be in mid-season form.

Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis WILL be our starting safeties against the Blots in Week 1. Those guys can cover and more importantly, they can actually tackle AND hit. LOVED what I saw out of those dudes tonight.

On offense, thank God we signed Torry Holt after the failed Joey Galloway expirement last year. What's that? He's out for the year already? Our starting TE is Alge Crumpler. All 297 pounds of him. Epic. Fred Taylor still isn't on the injury report... yea! I don't think he's touched the ball... yet. Wes Welker looks great coming back from the devastating knee injury. He hasn't gotten hit yet either. Logan Mankins is one of the best guards in all of football. He continues to hold out. This team is a mess.
