6 sigma fukking blows.
maybe it's not technically part of 6 sigma, but, I think it is. could be some other managerial bullshit.
what i am talking about is the incessant demand by management to at least make believe they are documenting every action their serfs perform during the workday.
i'm not saying you don't need some way to track this or in cases where an action in directly billable to someone, there needs to be this step.
what i am talking about is my workplace where we have a staff of about 8, givertake to keep a little over 100 systems running/do preventive maintenance? and what if that data is basically shit because the tool for entering it is so cumbersome?
seems to me that in certain environments, you just need estimate how much is being done, particularly if it is thousands of little jobs. if the act of documenting takes up a considerable chunk of your time, you really need to ask yourself how important is the data.
i would think that good management, consisting of an actual dude, with a fukking clue, getting away from his excel spreadsheet for a while, is a better measuring tool than some fukk that sits there all day looking at inaccurate data, so he can make more graphs to send to his boss. i think there is a place for micro documentation, used selectively from time to time as a tool to fine tune your big picture estimates
lets here it, MBA mensas. how would you handle such things?

8 employees performing maintenance and (I assume) troubleshooting and installs on 100 systems?
Jeebus, that's a textbook example of a shop that needs 6S if there ever was one.

without knowing what a "system" is, that's kind of an ignorant statement, wouldn't you say? fyi, a "system" in this case is a mail inserting system. they are electromechanical monsters that do require a fair bit of maintenance.OCmike wrote:8 employees performing maintenance and (I assume) troubleshooting and installs on 100 systems?

anyway, you are sort of correct in that some sort of 6S system is needed in this place, but, the need lies more so on the production end (machine, or system operators) than it does on the maintenance end. If they standardized the work even a little, there probably wouldn't be a need for 8 techs wasting way to much time doing set up work.

Re: 6 sigma fukking blows.
My employer is currently involved in that shit. The tasks that I do can vary in completion time depending on multiple factors, yet they want to know how much time it takes me to do each type of task, regardless of the great differences in complexity each can have. It's just a bunch of crap to make management feel like they know more than they actually do (or really care to know).

Fuck that BS. When I left the USN we were going through the Deming TQM crap. Triple T is all you need, especially if you have a Pedo in Sheasshole on your staff.

The Deming TQM 'crap' and variations thereof is what started the Japs on the way to pwning our asses in automobile mfg.Atomic Punk wrote:Fuck that BS. When I left the USN we were going through the Deming TQM crap.
But I agree that it's a buncha' happy horseshit. It's designed to give midlevel managers w/o an oz. of common sense or actual mfg. experience a method of controling an operation they don't understand.
There have been many spinoffs of TQM, Kaisen being the last I had to endure and pretend I liked. Every hotshot fresh from college probably has the latest and greatest production method on their resume but soon gets smacked upside the head by the real world.

Hahahaha. Good one IF...
Look man, I guarantee you that "Delta, Delta, Delta... may I help ya, help ya, help ya" will divorce that pasty white ass in under 5 years.
Memo to pasty pellet gun holder, you might want to upgrade to a cheap shotgun before she empties your bank account. Just be forewarned bucko/tough guy.

Yep. But ignorant responses are all you're going to get without any meaningful details with which to form said responses.
Anyway, if you're looking for informed opinions on Six Sigma, as it relates to a specific aspect of your place of employment...
1. Try providing some relevant information
ii. You're in the wrong place
D. All of the above
fyi, a "system" in this case is a mail inserting system. they are electromechanical monsters that do require a fair bit of maintenance.
Oh, so I swung at a fastball with my eyes closed and still bounced it off the facing on the second deck? Awesome.anyway, you are sort of correct in that some sort of 6S system is needed in this place.
