Re: Your Top 5 after 9/11.
Bama and tOSU look the part. not sold on Oklahoma just yet....placekicking is still a (big) problem and i don't think they can run the ball a lick when they need to against better front 7's. FSU's db's were out of position a lot and the Noles as a whole seemed pretty undisciplined, sloppy. Ponder made some really bad 3rd down throws when the game was still in the balance and OU got some big stops that let them pile it on. don't remember which of the FSU posters made it clear that FSU's D was a work in progress (or just not very good). i think that's true.
was impressed with Oregon's 2nd half fisting of Tennessee. i thought the Vols and 12.5 at the half was easy money.

Re: Your Top 5 after 9/11.
they looked perty good, but OU is pretty tough in Norman and can uncork these sort of beatings on even good teams about once a season. As tough as they can be at Owen Field, they are just as fragile psychologically on the road or in Dallas sometimes (see RRS 4th Q in 05, 08). Cincy 08 (52-26), Miami 09 (51-13), Oregon maybe (31-7) a few years back. Venables is a streaky DC in my book. when the plan is on, his guys are formidable. but, sometimes, they get caught with their pants down scheme-wise and can't adjust...especially in Lubbock against Mike Leach. and, you can bet Indy's McMansion and his BBQ sauce fortune that Brent V. will bring the heat on 3rd and long. it's like the sun coming up. works a lot of the time, but you also get some big conversions.Papa Willie wrote: I'll take your word on OU, but what limited time I saw of it - they looked perty good.
And yeah - Oregon looks to be something else. Most teams that far away from home would have tended to pack it in. UT was too young to cope with OU coming back. They were "bully-whompered". :D
Stoops did call off the dogs earlier than usual, not wanting to hang "half a hunnerd" on his bro I guess. FSU got a little chippy towards the end and scored their last TD with less than 15 secs left, as well. 4th Q was a farce. i don't read too much into the game. thrilled with the W....but as good as they looked yesterday, they looked just as bad against Utah State in the last 30 minutes.
re: running up the score, "calling off the dogs" [above]....cue UT fan and the "Bob Stoops is the worst elements of sportsmanship, all combined in an astronomical ton of Evil...Mack Brown personifies the Nichomachean Ethics" take.

1. Bama (solid, workmanlike win over a good, not great team. game never in doubt)
2. Ohio State (still not so impressed with Miami this year or last, but Buckeyes took care of business)
3. Oregon (Pac 10 looking very winnable....only Cal and Stanford showed positive yesterday. USC and UCLA, what's that smell?)
4. Texas (haven't been world-beaters on O, but getting better and "for real" on D
5. TCU/Oklahoma

Re: Your Top 5 after 9/11.
WTF you people smoking? Putting Texas in the top 5? They belong nowhere near that. The offense has no identity, no running game, and no one to catch passes and change the game. Gilbert was a badass spread QB in HS and Texas has been running the spread with success since the VY days and now they want to go under center? And the defense is good but not as good as their press clippings say. Chykie Brown gets beat every game on a long ball, the rest of the secondary can't catch gift wrapped INTs and the whole unit seems intent of big hits and head hunting over sound fundamental tackling. As much as I love 'em I'm seeing Alamo Bowl for this group.

oregon beat a middling sec team on the road. they return nearly their entire offense last year that scored nearly 23,000 points. granted, qb isn't the position you'd like to be breaking someone in at, but then again you associate it with good decision-making, and masoli...uh...thomas is an upgrade.
ohio state beat goldtoof u at home. why this is particularly impressive, i don't know, especially when harris could have saved everyone the trouble and just handed the ball to jim tressel himself every time they took possession.
bama is breaking in a new defense. what better way to get used to the speed of live football than opening against sjsu and penn state, a team that will score less than 50 points this year.
oklahoma nearly lost to utah state at home. top 5 on just reputation and a big xii schedule.
stanford is coached by jim harbaugh. jim harbaugh will eat your face.
so there, not necessarily P10BSH.

aside from the "someone has to be ranked in the top five," why would oklahoma be considered a top five team right now other than they're ou and they're going to lose one game in the big xii? they're coming off a five-loss season, were nearly beat by utah state at home, but oh look, they destroyed a brand name school that hasn't done anything in years.King Crimson wrote:OU plays FSU, Air Force, @Cincinatti, and Texas all before the middle of October.....and you are whinging about their schedule already? you Big Ten guys crack me up.....a 4-7 Purdue squad or a roadie to Northwestern is a tough, ballsout game to you but a 10 win Missouri team always sucks. you'll notice that in my own top 5 i put several backspaces between 1,2,3..........and 4, 5. so, we agree on that. purdue is 4-7 because they play in the big ten. mizzou only reaches ten wins because they get to play big xii teams.

pretty shutyomouth of you to respond cluelessly to some quip then pretend the only reason you did so was because i'm the dipshit. it's not my fault you treat this
not sure what comment i backed off on. oklahoma gets by on reputation because they - and texas - run roughshod through a pretty weak league just before taking their ridiculously high ranking into a bcs game and losing to a team that came out of a tougher conference.
as a serious comment. or the one about sausage grinders that followed it.purdue is 4-7 because they play in the big ten. mizzou only reaches ten wins because they get to play big xii teams.

in fact, you make the weak Big XII (implied OU and Texas couldn't win as much in the Big Bad SSH Big Ten) argument in your next paragraph. see? you can't help it.
if you want to call out "sarcasm", then why not just accept "overstate for effect" also works to highlight an existing logic (Big Ten tough, top to bottom, all the time, every year.......Big XII easy) which taken to it's necessary conclusion becomes absurd. it's like satire....maybe you've heard of that. i can point you to it....if you like. you don't seem like one of the fancy book learnin' hatin' types around here....

yeah, i made that argument? maybe you can highlight where i did.King Crimson wrote: in fact, you make the weak Big XII (implied OU and Texas couldn't win as much in the Big Bad SSH Big Ten) argument in your next paragraph. see? you can't help it.
and not that i expect you to spreadsheet previous commentary, but i'm not exactly a big ten honk. i'm more familiar with big ten teams because of michigan, but other than that i could give a shit about conference represent. i rooted for texas tech against msu last year, oregon against osu, and gt against iowa. (go penn state and n'western, i suppose.)
even if i was B10BSHing, it still doesn't change the fact that the ou/tejas winner gets to treat the big xii ccg as a coronation event. and those bcs teams that beat ou haven't been from the big ten, just in case you were still going to continue with the big bad big ten thing. oklahoma is basically the big xii's ohio state.
