So I drove a couple miles down to a soybean field and of course fired up the video cam on the blackberry so I could document my potential disfigurement for all to share.

A few years back, we had a horrible skunk problem in the summer of that year. Seems that one of my neighbors was leaving food out for them, so of course, they congregated around the village. They were getting pretty bold. One evening around 9:00, just as it was starting to get dark, my daughter (then 2 years old) bent over to pet what she thought was one of our cats on the back porch. I bent over to get a good look, saw the white stripe up and down the back, picked my daughter up and brought her inside as quickly as I could (fortunately I got her before she petted the skunk).

Discharging a firearm is illegal in the village where I live, and I don't have one anyway, so I hit on the idea of a humane trap. Something told me to call the State DEC before I did anything, so I did. I told them my plan was to try to trap them, drive them into the countryside and release them far away from civilization. They told me I couldn't do that unless I owned the property where I was dumping them.

With that plan awry, my next course of action was to go to the next Village Board meeting and inform them that the homeowners in my neighborhood needed some help from the village in dealing with this skunk problem. But just as quickly as the skunks descended on us, they went away. We haven't had anywhere near as serious a problem since.

My understanding is that it is illegal to relocate any wildlife in Wisconsin.
