Marathon
Any of you douchecisterns ever run one? My first will be May 2. I've run a half marathon, and I have run as far as 20 miles. I've had some trouble with my Achilles tendon all winter, so I haven't been able to train as much as I wanted to - but it's feeling better, and the weather is starting to cooperate...so I guess I'll get cracking on some longer distances in the next few weeks.

dear pusfag,
you are old.
you are fat.
you ancestors have spent the last 5 thousand years or so developing alternate forms of transportation.
leave the 26 mile runs to those darkies from east africa who didn't even know what a fukkin' wheel was 20 years ago and have evolved accordingly.

ps, i talked to the knees and they concur but are afraid to say anything.

Re: Marathon
i used to take part in such lunacy 'til i ended up in my orthopod's office. he basically said, go ahead, keep runnin'. i got kids that will hopefully be in med school in about ten years and it ain't cheap. i'll need to do as many knee replacements as i can to pay for it.
i highly recommend you look into cycling. great workout and can actually be practical for shit like work commuting, errand running. and you don't have to mortgage the house for a decent bike. craigslist is full of quality used ones.

Re: Marathon
I'm doing Ironman Florida in November. I'll be running a marathon after a little warmup of a 2.4 mile swim and a 112 mile bike. Big fuckin' deal about just doing a marathon.
Just kidding! I have yet to run 26.2 miles and I'm absolutely insane for choosing an Ironman as my first marathon run. That said, I'm a pretty decent triathlete and have three half Ironmans on schedule this year before the race in November. I'll do what I can on the swim and bike and death march my way through the run. I'm not going to lie... the marathon scares the shit out of me.
Be very, very careful about your Achilles issue. If it hurts then take care of it. Maybe mix in some intense exercise bike workouts to supplement the running if you can't pound through the training runs without pain. Get the cardio to where it needs to be first. You're only six weeks away.
Have fun, don't kill yourself.

Re: Marathon
I'm a good swimmer and a good cyclist. My goal is to finish the 2.4 mile swim in 1:15 minutes and the 112 mile bike in 5:30 or so (20 mph at least). Counting transitions would have me starting the run around the 7 hour mark. I'd love to finish in about 11:30 but anything under 12:00 would be a good race. That's all dependent on the weather being okay and not having any mechanical problems on the bike. If there are 20 mph winds or I get a flat tire or two then my bike time will obviously suffer. Basically, I'm going to give myself at least 4:30 to complete the run.smackaholic wrote:Rack anyone crazy enough to attempt, never mind finish a full ironman. Good luck, PSU. I've never tried a full marathon...two halfs and was bored as fuck by ten miles in each. So I stick to 10Ks and an occasional 10 mile race.
That achilles...get it worked out quickly. Ankles, shins, even some knee shit can be run through, but not that achilles.

Re: Marathon
from the sounds of it, you were basically a healthy young man who figured it was a good idea to go out and run stupid distances.Jsc810 wrote:Rack you for going for a marathon. There's nothing like crossing that finish line.
I've done 3 of them and an ultra marathon as well, it was a 50K. All three marathon times were around 5:15. Yes, I am slow and I don't care.
To me the running was just a way to train for triathlons, which are more fun to me. Like Rack Fu, I was aiming for an Ironman distance race; unlike Rack Fu, I was merely trying to finish. Being as fast as he is boggles my mind. I've finished three half-ironman triathlons, but I never went under 8 hours, Rack Fu would have beaten me by 3 hours.
Then my body started to break down, no need to go through all those details again, but since my last triathlon I've had 8 surgeries. Before that, the finish line of an Ironman was a remote possibilty, it would have been a huge challenge for me to finish under the cut off time. After the surgeries, I'm forced to admit that it is no longer even a remote possibility.
About two years ago, I was partially paralyzed, losing the ability to move my right leg, and getting worse. I was just hoping to be able to walk again without falling down and to get rid of the intense pain. After two major back surgeries (xray1 xray2), the doctors told me that I should continue rehab in the pool doing water aerobics.
That was a few months ago. The pool has really helped. And as I got stronger and able to move around more, my mind started to wonder if I could actually do another triathlon, not an Ironman but just a sprint distance one.

Good luck. We expect a full report if not a PET. In my best days--- early 40's I could do 10K w/o much difficulty. Not enough Type I (slow twitch) muscle for anything longer. I remember reading that Frank Shorter had about 90% Type I muscle great for long distance and Carl Lewis had about 85% Type II which works for sprints and jumps.

We have talked about this before but I'm in no way fast. I'm top 1/3 at best. A 12 hour finish at IM Florida puts me in about 900th place out of 2400. Looking to do the half in 5:30.

Run 10 of 'em. Last one was 1999 in Las Vegas. Should never have signed up for it. Won't do another one until I've trained properly. Did a half last year. Had an achilles injury that set me back this year. Took about 8 weeks off to cure it.
Know your body. Are you a heel striker or do you come down on the ball of your foot? I have terrible heel first mechanics that can make me injury prone. Am trying to correct it will barefoot jogs after training runs and strides during runs to get up on ball of foot. Hope to run another one in fall if all goes well.
Good luck, Dave.

Torn achilles over here boss. Just standing in the middle of the football field coaching Pop Warner and the sucker cut loose. My first response, I looked up to the sky to see if an airplane part nailed me on the way down. Second response, HELP! one of the football moms' came out and saw my foot floppin around like a snapped twig and said...you're achilles just "snapped". A jolt, intense pain, sweats, and off to the hospital. That was somewhere around 19and91 and it's still a mess. Scar tissue prevents any running, as if I was up for that anyway. So I got the neck thingy going for me now, kinda takes my mind off the slight limp I was left with from the A-snap. It's all good, getting old definitely sucks at times, but hey, it beats the heck out of not getting old.

The 17 hour time limit (which would be midnight) is not something I want to worry about. I want to be completely passed out asleep or whimpering in the fetal position by midnight because every inch of my body is in agonizing pain... whichever is more appropriate. I will then spend the majority of the next day in a hot tub or in traction... whichever is more appropriate.

That's gonna be a rough one with the late-May date. Non-wetsuit swim will make the swim super tough. Hitting the marathon portion at the hottest part of the day should be tons of fun. Nothing like running a marathon in the 90 degree heat after 2.4 miles of swimming and a 112 mile bike ride.
I may regret this decision.

PSU, remember before I moved to NJ and did nothing but f-off more than I do now? I played the serve-and-volley style of tennis that has all but disappeared. I just remember serving and the initial hop before approach and I heard a loud POP! I hit the ground before I knew what happened. Left Achilles snapped and I was out for 7 months.
I remember when my dad and his buddies were in their mid-40's like I am now, they all started training for Marathons and they were ex-college D-1 football players, etc. going for it once again. The only person that kept doing that as a lifestyle was a neighbor that looks just like Ichabod Crane (and yes, he was a high school English teacher). That dude ran Marathons for many years after that. He ran the Boston Marathon for years and anything nearby like the San Fagsissyco. He had never played sports but found his calling at the age of 45. Props to him. That was a side story on old fucks.
I have discussed knee issues with Mace and a few others here about alternate fitness ideas. I've been watching this one program for about a year and when I saw it was mostly ex-military types around my age that are successful, I went on eBay and got the program for almost nothing. That P90X thing actually works. 90% mental and 10% physical. It's really hard and when I took the fitness test I was in horrible shape. Worse than I thought. Right now I'm midway through the 1st phase and I'm seeing results.
So for any of you fellow fat fucks that KNOW you are out of shape, I suggest trying the P90X thing. It's really fucking hard, but it's mostly mental. Workouts are 1 hr to 1.5 hrs a day.

Missed a top-10 finish in my age group (M40-44) by "this" much at a triathlon today (500m swim, 15 mile bike and 3.5 mile run). I was 7th or 8th coming off the bike and was run down by 7 or 8 guys on the run to finish at 1:17 (15th out of 110 in my group and 83rd overall out of 1100 per prelim results). Blasted the bike at a almost a 24 mph clip but could only muster a 8:07/mile pace on the run. Not sure how those guys can run a 7:00/mile pace. I have some natural talent at biking, running not so much. I can't push past that pain threshold that good runners can push past.

Did Ironman 70.3 Syracuse yesterday. 1.2 mile swim/56 mile bike/13.1 mile run. Finished in five and a half hours with a 36 minute swim, 2:44 bike and 2:01 run. The weather was terrible - mid to upper-50's with fog and drizzly rain. The lake was 62 degrees for the swim. I was so cold the whole day since I'm accustomed to training in 100 degree heat. The people from the northeast didn't think the conditions were that bad but that's like a cold winters day in Houston. The bike course was real tough and hilly. 2700 feet of climbing during the 56 miles. I could've gone faster on the run but I was still haunted by that day in Galveston five months ago and wanted to take it easy early on and settle in. I think I ran the last three miles faster than the first three. No vomiting, no IV's and no hospital trip this time.
Next stop is Ironman Florida on November 6th. Bring on the 2.4/112/26.2!!!

Re: Marathon
Can you open water swim 2000 meters in 36 minutes in 62 degree water with 1800 people without wearing yourself out so that you can bike and run for the next 5 hours? If not, you can shut the fuck up. And don't give me some Al Bundy story about how you swam faster when you were in high school. Present day, bitch.
I'm no Michael Phelps but that's not slow by any stretch of the imagination. The 1300 people behind me on the swim wouldn't have a problem with it.

I hereby challenge JSC to a 1 mile race.
The one with the most internal titanium gets a .30 second head start.
Assisting trained dogs are allowed, as are performance enhancing drugs.
Oh, and since he is a lawyer, he has to be blindfolded.

What were we just talking about?

Re: Marathon
I've got to think that the splashing alone has to add a minute or two to the time. That sounds like trying to swim in a blender.Rack Fu wrote:Can you open water swim 2000 meters in 36 minutes in 62 degree water with 1800 people without wearing yourself out so that you can bike and run for the next 5 hours?

Actually, the start of an open water swim can be exactly like that. Or perhaps like playing roundball under the basket while in water.BSmack wrote:I've got to think that the splashing alone has to add a minute or two to the time.
