Looking at their schedule so far, they beat a Purdue that just lost a MAC team this weekend. They lost a close game to Michigan but could've won with a full game from Crist. They lost in OT to a State team that I still haven't figured out how good they are. I don't think losing to Stanford is a shocker at this point considering Kelly is rebuilding that program. It's not like they were ranked going into the season. They should been 2-2 or 1-3 based on their schedule. They very well could've been 3-1 as well. I'd cut BK a little slack because this is a mediocre program he's taking over. Certainly, if they end up with a 3 win season a la RichRod in his first year, the Domers aren't going to be as kind.

Certainly, if they end up with a 3 win season a la RichRod in his first year, the Domers aren't going to be as kind.

Considering that they've already beaten Purdue and have Western Michigan, Navy, Tulsa and Army still left on the schedule, that should translate into a 5-win season even if the wheels completely fall off.

At this point, I think the reasonable goal should be a 7-win season. That should be doable if they can get by Fredo and Pitt in the next two weeks, even possible with a split of those two. While I'm not usually a strong advocate for ND playing in one of what Van once dubbed the "Tard Bowls," I think this team needs one of those games. Not to mention that if ND misses a bowl this season, it'll be the third time in the last four years that ND has missed a bowl game. That's only happened once since ND started playing bowl games (79-82), and at least the bowl game we did play in during that stretch was the Sugar Bowl.

I have heard comparisons made between this year and Holtz' first year, 1986. ND finished 5-6 that year, with a lot of hard-luck losses, which is what 2 of ND's 3 losses this year have been. It's also worth noting that both first-year coaches asked their players to buy into a program which had made substantial changes, deliberately, from the predecessor coach. The big difference is scheduling. ND played a killer schedule in '86, which included Michigan, Alabama, Penn State, LSU and USC. Now? Not so much, of course.

Of course, you can only play the teams that line up on the other side of the field from you, so the more important point of comparison will be to see whether ND's program continues to improve in subsequent years in much the same way that it did under Holtz.

I'm not sure any ND fans in this forum have claimed anything other than ND is an average team in this forum. right now they're a 7 win team and with a few breaks they're better than that. They could realistically be 3-1 right now but they're not due to many mistakes. If Slowcal doesn't want ND on the schedule anymore then call Pat Haden and voice your displeasure. I do recall that ND hasn't been that competitive the last few years but there was a 13 year span that....oh forget it.
Kelly will have ND back in a year or two and realistic ND fans realize that.

I have to admit, I don't entirely get this.

I definitely get that there are people out there who hate ND. And I also get that many of the people who hate ND resent their independence . . . sort of.

But in reading between the lines (and admittedly, maybe I'm doing a little too much of that here), the logic seems to start to fall apart for me.

Since this was the very first post in the thread, reading this post in conjunction with the title leads me to believe that Screwgie seems to think that being independent is hurting ND's program. And I get the sense that Schmick feels the same way.

Which leads me to conclude that Screwgie and Schmick feel this way about ND's program:

1. They hate ND.
2. They resent ND's independence.
3. They believe that ND's independence is hurting the program.

Problem is, I don't see any possible way to reconcile those three statements with one another. You could reconcile any two of the three. But you really can't reconcile all three. If you hate ND, and believe that ND's independence is a detriment to its football program, seems to me that you'd want ND to continue on with its folly. Then again, I don't hate ND, so what do I know about what goes through the mind of a ND hater?
