Haven't heard about that one in Indiana. When I lived in a Dallas suberb (Frisco) their mascot were the Coons. They ended up being forced to change the name to Raccoons because of all these black people protesting their mascot name, even though Frisco at the time was at least 90% caucasion.

I don't really think of black bears and Mississippi going together either. But IIRC, "black bear" was selected because it's an anagram for Abel Ackbar. Although it looks to me like there's an a missing.
