That looks like a good time, but I think hunting would be much cooler if animals were equipped with intelligence and weapons.

It's not as skewed as you think. Most hunters are equipped with just a weapon.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:That looks like a good time, but I think hunting would be much cooler if animals were equipped with intelligence and weapons.

Just showing up for breakfast would be cool over there. PET's are cool... even if some shots are blurry.

I can get down with that.

Nice PET, Jsc.
I'm going on my first deer hunt next month in Junction, TX. The last time I fired a rifle was a rimfire .22 when I was thirteen years old.
This is a new experience for me. I'm borrowing a .308 centerfire for the hunt and start practicing with it tomorrow. Right now, I'm reading everything I can about the Rut and the the anatomy of a deer and the best place to shoot them. Should be fun.

I thought JSC was a lefty. Aren't lefties supposed to be sucking the duck's cocks instead of killing the poor soft cuddly things? What about the catastrophic affect a duck killing will have on climate change? A dead duck won't shit, no duck shit reduces natural fertilization of plant life that creates the air we breathe...

First things first....Rack the PET jsc! Now..speaking of South Dakota... my maternal grandparents had a large farm up near Winner, South Dakota. They sold out in the late 50's but held on to enough land that I've inherited 80 acres of prime hunting ground. Add in all the land around it that my siblings own plus the countless acres of land that friends of the family possess and we're talking about 5 sections of some of the finest pheasant, wild turkey, grouse and white tail hunting around.KC Scott wrote:Another rack on the PET Chip.

Scott,
The hunt is in a stand on a fenced in lease. Bucks range around 130-150 class. Yeah, they're that big. I pretty much just point and shoot.
I fired the .308 I am using for the hunt. They were store bought cartridges and considering that, my grouping was about 2" apart (150 yards) on my first four rounds. I let the gun sit, then shot it another four times. My grouping was tighter at about an inch and a half. The guys I were with had reloads for their 300 mag rifles. One of 'em said he can make some reloads for me and go out to the range one more time before my trip. He pretty much guaranteed I'd have no separation with the reloads, but he also said being an inch to 2" apart was going to drop the deer anyways.
Needless to say, I'm pretty stoked about this trip. I never thought I would do something like this, but I've always told myself I'd be open to trying new things. We'll see how it plays out.

In a little while, I'm probably going to go hunting for the occasionally-elusive chinook salmon.
This time, maybe I'll try and not be a greenhorn, and actually check my knots and whatnot while ultralight fishing for hogs. Maybe then I won't immediately break off a huge beast... like last week.

Debating whether to hit the tidewater (maybe at the Handicap Hole on the Tilly), or stick to the Upper Wilson.
About a week or so ago, the tidewater was about dead, and all the kids had headed way upstream.
I'm suprised the water isn't higher after so much rain yesterday, but the gauge is still under 6ft, so should be good. Although after the first round of rains a couple of weeks ago, there was some bigazz slide on one of the tribs, and everything below about Jones Creek was pretty chocolatey... but that's probably washed out by now.
There's probably nooks all the way up to the deadline, I'm thinking.
Last time out, they were packed in at Jones Creek pretty good. One pod was some pretty damn big'uns, too. The Wils gets some huge freaking nooks. Same goes for the Poor White Trask, but it's not nearly as cool to fish from the bank -- getting caught in the crossfirefrom a gunfight over who was casting where about 20 years ago still has soured me on the Trask... that was some crazy shit -- saturday morning, crowded as all get-out... and some yokels decided a few feet of water was worth exchanging bullets over. You never seen a couple of motherfuckers get up the bank and to the truck so fast, which was made easier when other bystanders drew down and laid some nice cover fire. Fuggin Trask rednecks. Snag another fish in the tail, Billybob.
Mouth of Jordan is usually good -- seems like I catch reinvigorated summers when I go nookin' there, but I'm OK with that.
Heard rumor that there's already winters in the lower river, but I'll treat it as rumors until I verify them myself.

Re: duck season opens next weekend
We have similar fishing models for the Wilson. I start up high using gear just a scratch heavy for winters, but a bit light for the fall nooks. I start at Jordan Creek and work down, maybe a bit faster today since it is mid week..but probably no lower than Donaldson's today, if that far. I like to fish better than drive, and the Wilson is the closest good river.
The ones at Jones Creek must have been that early push that just fucking shoots up the River, and if you can't find them in a 2 day frame, your not going to. Those other reports are what I have been reading at I Fish, but about 75% of the fishing threads are complete bullshit anyway. And the reports of winters down load need to be confirmed as well :) :) :)
The old gun fight at the Trask. Heard about that one...friend of my bro in law was there..Interesting thread on I Fish about carrying while fishing....    It is more like who doesn't ?

I usually start around Jones, and do drivebyes down to usually around Mills -- I'm not too into paying to fish on a river with miles and miles of bank access. Once the rains start, if there's fish at Donaldson's or Sollie, they're usually at Mills too.

They should rename that site IFishThereforeILie.net. It seems to be an online community dedicated to the local fishing folks for the purpose of lying like hell to keep people off their favorite river... between rounds of thumping the bible. They asked me for a bunch of personal info when I treid to register... screw that.

I wanna say it was October 1992... maybe.
If I'm by myself -- I usually pack. If I'm hitting a bunch of hike-in spots and climbing the steep bank a bunch -- generally not. I try to keep the weight down for hiking -- although the Walther is pretty decent as far as weight goes... the .45, not so much. It's been a lot of years since I last used a .32 to dispatch a fish, rather than a rock. Not sure how the Fish and Feathers guys would feel about seeing a GSW to a hog's head.
Speaking of fishing -- where the fuck is my buddy? Fucker ain't here yet, and his phone goes straight to voicemail. Was supposed to be an early outing. Now, maybe we'll chase them up from the tidewater.
I think I'll go with something as little stronger than 6# this time. 6-8# seems to hook a whole bunch more fish... and result in a lot more long-line catch-and-release action.

Hit Jordan and a couple of other spots and then spent the time at Mills. Only was about 2 other guys there..a couple of fucking Koreans that landed a chrome hen about 25#. Corkie with some yarn and some lousy looking eggs...horsed that bitch right in..but he had 24 # test on. I been lurking on there, seldom post...some dude lectured me about shooting crows (in season) as a non game bird....oh yeah..the fucking crows that destroyed 2 pheasant nests in my meadow? Right..get right on that one..going to decoy them black bastards in and shoot them this weekThey should rename that site IFishThereforeILie.net. Usually keep my Tarus 380 in the front wader pocket. Bought a nice Tarus Millineum 40 at the gun show this last week end, but a bit heavy to carry every day, and with waders on. Interesting as I get older I pass on those fucking guard rail jumps to hike down to the river. Did one at MP 12 that was a hike enough...Mills is pretty good for that, but can get too many people in there real fast.If I'm by myself -- I usually pack. What ?. A sporting line selection?..those cock bites on I Fish always say you light line dudes fuck up the holes, having to fight and work the fish and all that, instead of just cranking them in under 2 minutes on that 35 to 40 pound test stuff. I run 24 on the reel and 12 on the leader and just seem to do fine.I think I'll go with something as little stronger than 6# this time. 6-8# seems to hook a whole bunch more fish... and result in a lot more long-line catch-and-release action.
