Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
so whats worse,
a school paying an agent 200k to make sure that a player goes to that school
or
an agent paying a student, who has been at a school for 2 years, step father 85k to get that student to leave the school and go to the pros?
If USC got 3 years and 30 schollies for not knowing what was going on, Auburn deserves the death penalty for paying an agent that much scratch to get a player in to the school in the first place.

Auburn has nothing to worry about. Obviously the NCAA only cares to bust USC. Nobody else gets in trouble. Just USC.

And when nothing happens to Auburn inspite of the fact that they paid 200 grand to get Cam Newton to go to school there, the ncaa's bias will be proven.TheJON wrote:Auburn has nothing to worry about. Obviously the NCAA only cares to bust USC. Nobody else gets in trouble. Just USC.

Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
Aside from how this may or may not affect this year's MNC battle, who the hell cares? Can we just accept that scholarship athletes are not and have never been amateurs (for starters, that free education is a payment) and let them make the best deals they can for themselves and their families the same way that any academic scholarship recipient is already allowed to do? Nobody cries when someone on a full ride to MIT picks up a big signing bonus while still under scholarship.

While i certainly don't know who made the choice, Newton orig went to Florida. and, even, during his transfer recruitment/pay day, said he was still a Gator "at heart"....which i thought was an odd statement. so, loyalty either IS or ISN't part of the Cam Newt package. hard to know.

Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
It sounds like Kenny Rogers is the only one in trouble at this point, if the story is true, for requesting money from Mississippi State and apparently posing as an agent. If the story is true, one could assume that Auburn had to pay Rogers to land Newton, but this should all come out in the course of the investigation. Rogers could have been confident that he could persuade Newton to attend any college that paid him and Newton, or his family, may not have received any money, if any money was, in fact, paid to anyone. This will be an interesting story as it developes.
At any rate, Kenny Rogers would appear to be fucked and should have known when to hold 'em, known when to fold 'em, and known when to walk away. Too late now.

I want to say I remember that happening with Kellen Winslow II and Washington.
It also happened with a former Sooner Great. Rocky Calmus wanted to go to Kansas State initially but his father told him he wouldn't sign an LOI for a Big 12 school other than Oklahoma which was his second choice. He ended up at OU and later said he was thankful his father pushed that on him.

Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
I was not aware of that and that may entirely be the case. But why won't the NCAA allow someone who is an ADULT, i.e. 18, enter into a binding contract, which is what an LOI is, correct? That makes no sense.Believe the Heupel wrote:There is the point that, regardless of whether he's ballsy enough to stand up to his old man, the NCAA will not accept a letter of intent signed by someone under 21 unless their legal guardian signs as well. Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
Wasn't Newton thrown out of florida for something to do with lap top computers?
Now it seems his dad is going to try to use the teblow defense and hide the money in his church, a church that was on the verge of being shut down because it was not close to building code and had no money to make improvements but suddenly has had an influx of money that has allowed them to make all the repairs needed. This is an indictment on college football and religion which are two of the last legal rackets this country has. Religion takes tax free untracable money and provides no service or paper trail.
The school paid for the kid to come there, thats SMU stuff and for that Auburn deserves the death penalty

Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
I say any D-1 scholly player should receive a 1,000 dollar a month living allowance. Sounds simple, but I believe it might help most players stay away from the dirty money. Considering the bank the U is getting off the players, scholarship in underwater basket weaving be damned, I think it's more than fair.
Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
The amount a player should get should be based on the cost of living in the area surrounding the school. Giving 2 players 1,000 a month each when rent for a 2 bedroom apartment next to the campus is 3000 a month isnt going to help much. and if a player has a kid or two, that 1,000 a month doesnt cover anything.H4ever wrote:I say any D-1 scholly player should receive a 1,000 dollar a month living allowance. Why not? It still is one group of college employees playing another. Same as it is now. The only difference would be the freedom of the players to make their own money.poptart wrote:Are you still going to call it "intercollegiate athletics?" lolBSmack wrote:Can we just accept that scholarship athletes are not and have never been amateurs (for starters, that free education is a payment) and let them make the best deals they can for themselves and their families the same way that any academic scholarship recipient is already allowed to do?
I couldn't agree more. CFB can be very entertaining to watch. The NFL could learn a thing or two from the college game in terms of the pace and flow of the game. But as far as taking the polls or the MNC seriously? Fuck that. I could care less who wins because they do not crown a champion ON THE FIELD.Oh well, what you suggest would be better than what we see now, which is a TOTAL competetive farce - and not taken seriously by anyone not categorized as IODIT.

This, both need to be at full-strength for this showdown.Sudden Sam wrote:I'm hoping there's nothing to this (been investigated since July, so must not be) and that Cam and Auburn are as clean as a whistle.
There'd be nothing worse than Cam being suspended when the Tide plays AU. I'd rather play them full-strength and lose than to beat a Cam-less Tiger team.
That and my fantasy-team is hosed without Cam Newton carrying the load.

so thats the QB play a school gets when they pay 200k for a recruit to go there.
Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
Here's a story of why Newton left Florida. Athletes cheating in their classes is not really news but the stupidity meter for this guy is going off the charts.
http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootbal ... ng-scandalAuburn quarterback Cameron Newton had three different instances of academic cheating while attending the University of Florida and faced potential expulsion from the university, according to a source.
Newton, considered the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, attended Florida in 2007 and 2008 before transferring to Blinn College, a junior college in Texas. He first violated Florida’s student honor code by cheating in a class during his freshman year, according to the source.
Newton was arrested for the theft of a laptop from a Florida student’s dorm room in November 2008. He again violated the university’s honor code by putting his name on another student’s paper and turning it in, according to the source. Newton was caught after the instructor asked the real author of the paper why he had not turned in his work, the source said.
According to the source, after the student said he had turned in a paper, he and the instructor went through all the submissions and discovered that Newton had put his name on the paper in question.
Newton subsequently turned in a second paper to the instructor, but it was later found to have been purchased off the Internet, according to the source. The source said Newton was to appear for a hearing in front of Florida’s Student Conduct Committee during the spring semester of 2009, but instead transferred to Blinn College.
The committee could have levied sanctions against Newton that included suspension and expulsion from the university.
“He knew that he was facing a bad outcome,” the source said.
Auburn officials did not return telephone messages, text messages or e-mails as of late Monday. His father, Cecil Newton Sr., declined to comment on his son’s academic past.
“I wasn’t there,” the elder Newton said. “I cannot confirm or deny. At a time like this, I’m taking a defensive posture.
Last month, Newton, and his father, a pastor, told Sports Illustrated that the younger Newton decided to transfer from Florida in early January 2009 when Tim Tebow opted to remain for his senior year, a move that would have forced Newton into back-up status for another season.
Newton, however, wasn’t even enrolled at Florida for the spring semester of 2009 when he decided to transfer, according to the source.
The revelations of Newton’s academic cheating come less than a week after ESPN.com reported that a man named Kenny Rogers claimed to represent Newton and allegedly sought $180,000 for him to attend Mississippi State. Rogers allegedly told former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond that other schools had already offered $200,000.
The NCAA is investigating that matter. The Newtons and Rogers have denied the allegations.
Auburn has said Newton is eligible, and Auburn Athletic Director Jay Jacobs told USA Today that the school has not found any issues with Newton’s eligibility since starting to look in to it this past summer. But he also said that it’s “not a closed matter” and that the review is “still ongoing.”
The dual threat transferred from Blinn College to Auburn in January and has led the Tigers to a 10-0 record and No. 2 rating in the Bowl Championship Series standings. Newton has thrown for 1,890 yards and 19 touchdowns, while also leading the SEC in rushing with 1,146 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The only part of this story that surprises me is I figured the SEC had paid "tutors" to do their work for them. Somebody wasn't doing their job.

Newton took 180k to go to allbarn, a school paying for a recruit is far worse than the agents paying students who are already at schools, auburn deserves the death penalty for this and whats sad is that by the time the school really pays for newton, he will have left it for the league and will be making it rain in strip clubs filled with black strippers.

Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
Nobody at USC paid any recruits to come to school there.
If you cant see the difference in a schools responsibilty between a school itsself paying a player to go there or an agent paying a player already at the school to sign with that agent after he leaves the school, then there is no help for stupid like you

Re: UH OH Cam, the NCAA is knocking on your door
No one has proven that Auburn has violated any rules at this point in time, dumbfuck, unlike USC, who has been charged, tried, convicted, and sentenced. It doesn't sound good for Newton or Auburn, but I'd prefer to wait for all the facts to come in before hanging them by the nearest tree. I didn't say that USC was guilty of the same thing Auburn might be accused of doing, you ignorant cunt, or even compare the violations you allege by Auburn to the violations of USC for which they've already been sanctioned.SoCalTrjn wrote:Nobody at USC paid any recruits to come to school there.

Breaking news on ESPN
Sources: Cam Newton and father admitted in phone conversations that money would determine college choice
Joe Schad said that the SEC had this information as far back as January. Apparently, Cam Newton's father made the decision to go to Auburn and that it was because the money was too much.
