30 for 30 on Marcus Dupree

Post by MgoBlue-LightSpecial »

Good stuff...right up there with the Miami one. Since I was born in 82 I wasn't real familiar with his story. Dude benched 400 lbs ten times in high school  . Lotta coaches said he would've been the best ever. I wonder how much money the Reverend swindled from him...the guy who said in the end it was all good since he didn't technically profess to be his agent. What a piece of shyte.

Seems like a good dude who didn't have a bad word for anybody. Just very naive and trusting to a fault. I just wonder why the Rams cut him when he led all rushers during the exhibition season. Attitude? Out of shape?

Definitely one of the best 30 for 30's that ESPN has come out with.

That Reverend was a definite piece of shit. I wonder if he helped school Cecil Newton.

i saw all of MD's home games. He was pretty amazing. and this is following up Pruitt, Washington, Sims, Overstreet.....not exactly chopped liver. My uncle (former OK and TX HS coach and back up QB at OU to a guy named Jack Mildren) is pretty tight with some of the Switzer era assistants.....tells the story that the assistants have to physically threaten to get him back on the field at halftime in Lincoln. he'd never REALLY been hit before. remember, OU-NU is Thanksgiving. Last game of the year.

edit: Switzer toyed around with the I formation for Dupree. It was the same pulling guard blocking schemes but still. Barry tried the I twice.....once for Dupree and a guy named Troy Aikman. Troy didn't exactly scare people as an option QB. kind of funny, you've got Troy Aikman, HOF QB who was getting killed by OU fans (before Miami's Jerome Brown breaks his leg--I was there) for not being a good option QB. Not making people forget Thomas Lott, by any means.

Switzer was the worst thing that ever happened to Marcus Dupree. Not saying that the kid's work ethic wouldn't have eventually caught up with him, but Switzer even admitted to doing a shitty job of coaching the kid.

I'd say the injury that shattered his leg and kept him out of the game for 5 years was slightly worse.

Switzer was going through a rough time in his life in his own right at the time. Recent divorce, people calling for his head after to two sub-par (by Oklahoma standards) seasons in a row, some bad buisness decisions, and rumors of an affair between him and another coaches wife.

He should have still been in college that year developing as a player. He was already fucked by then because of his shitty conditioning which appeared to make him injury-prone. As a senior he would have starred for a national championship team at Oklahoma. Which might have landed him in the NFL rather than the USFL. He was the kind of kid that needed a bit of attention, yes, and he didn't get what he needed from Switzer. Switzer pretty much admitted that in the show.

I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for Barry Switzer, BTW.

Switzer was a great guy. Ask anyone who has ever played for him or who has known him. One of the guys my father served with in the military played TE for Switzer in the early 70s and spoke glowingly of him and said if anything his biggest fault as a college coach was caring too much about the kids. Switzer is exactly the kind of person who I would want to coach my children. In the 80s when we got hit with those major violations and put on probation everyone thinks about the horrible things that occurred with the players but nobody actually remembers what the major violations the NCAA uncovered were... Switzer paid for a plane ticket home for a back up who never really say the field to go home to his father's funeral and helped contribute money for a funeral of another player's infant child. Terrible person that Switzer everyone should hate a guy who treats his players like that.

Switzer could've handled him better, no question, but who's fault was it that Dupree left OU? Not Switzer's. Dupree even admitted in the show he regretted leaving OU.

Agreed, but had Switzer handled him differently, he may have stayed. Basically, they both agreed they fucked up.

Yeah, that Switzer was a great guy. Banging his assistant coach's wife and whatnot.

Both coaches and the wife denied those allegations.

i played little league baseball against Switzer's kids. he was there for every game. sitting in the bleachers like any other parent. i was also friends with the kids of Barry's assistant head coach, Merv Johnson. Barry was a flawed person, but not slimebag. he was great with the neighborhood kids. would always throw the football around....and he was basically God in Norman in the 70's and 80's.

Wasn't that when the football team had automatic weapons?

Not indicting Switzer...just asking.

That was Buster Rhymes and the Cali contingent on the team.

OK, slimy is a bit harsh. I'm sure he's an OK guy, just something "off" about him that rubs me the wrong way.

I always had a high level of disdain for Switzer. He seemed overly arrogant, but I can understand that I guess. He was on top of the world while at OU. He let it get to his head. Then he became the coach of the Cowboys and I hated him more. I hate the fucking Cowboys.

All that being said, after his coaching career ended, he was a regular on 1310 AM The Ticket in Dallas. I had never given two seconds of time to research into what the guy was really like. I still haven't. I don't care. However, I really did enjoy all the times he came on the show and listen to his stories. The man is entertaining, and he has a story for damn near any kind of situation you could imagine. Is he a "slimy" person? Of course. I still maintain 99.99999% of college coaches are slimeballs. You can list all the "goodwill cheating" he did and multiply that by 100* probably on the other side. Would I want him coaching my kid and/or team? Absolutely. Dude's a winner. I don't like the cheating, but I know it is done everywhere. Just don't get caught, and if you do, don't menstruate**.
