Great fucking album. Its a pity Bonzo couldn't have kept his vodka consumption under 2 liters that night. JPJ was just starting to emerge as a writing and producing force within Zeppelin during that album. Even if it was because Page was a total fucking junkie, I would have loved to see a few more Zeppelin albums wherein Jones was able to flex his creative muscle.

A little "slick" on the production side by LZ standards, but great flow throughout.

Probably my least favorite Zeppelin album but it doesn't make it a bad album. I didn't mind when The Who went to the synthesized sound...not so much with Zeppelin. I'm with Dins on 'In The Evening'...love that song...and it's hard to not tap your foot to 'Hot Dog'.

I remember when it was first released and how geeked I was to go buy it... and how disappointed I was with it at first. It's sorta' grown on me over the years but IMO it's their weakest effort.

Obviously you've never listened to The Complete BBC Radio Sessions 1969-1971: Empress Valley CD release. It is a collection of the raw pre-broadcast BBC master tapes. Start with those. They are all excellent examples of Zeppelin rocking out sans studio overdubs. And the envelope is only being pushed further out as collectors undertake their own restoration projects. There are so many soundboards out there that suffer because of tape speed issues. And the possibilities for providing a better live ambiance by creating matrices of soundboard and audience recordings is nearly endless.
Edit: I should also include the 1970-01-09 - Royal Albert Hall show as well. It was featured on the DVD in an enhanced form. But the raw boots that were circulating before the DVD was ever released are still fucking killer.
