Gov't: Raising retirement age hurts poor

Post by Onions »

WASHINGTON (AP) - Government auditors say raising the retirement age for Social Security would hurt low-income workers and minorities, and mean more disability claims by older people who are unable to work.

The projected spike in disability claims could end up hurting Social Security's finances. That's because disability benefits are typically higher than early retirement payments.

The report by the Government Accountability Office provides fodder for advocates who are fighting a proposal by leaders of President Barack Obama's deficit commission to increase the retirement age.

Experts say Social Security is on a financially unsustainable path already, and it will get worse as Americans live longer and collect more benefits.

why should cunts like this one http://www.raven-symone.org/biography.php be able to retire at 21? what did she do to earn that reality? 400 mil sits in that cunt's vault. she really put in some hard work in her first 21 years, she really earned that 400 mil

The first day you pay into ss your retirement age at which you can receive benefits should be locked in. To do otherwise would be change the terms of a contract midstream without the beneficiary signing off on it.

“Deserving”? Probably not, but why hate?

This is ‘merica, Onions. We all enjoy the freedom to fail – or succeed – as we so endeavor.

How's your French, Onions? I hear the Frogs are burning cars because their government is trying to extend their 32-hour work-week until they hit age 62.

Life is about choices. If you had gone military or entered the fire academy straight out of high school, O, you coulda started drawing a pension at age 38. As is, I know more than a few 70-somethings that actually like working. Makes 'em feel active and productive and junk....

I'm not yet in my 70's, and I'm a couple of years away from being able to get social security at 62, but you're right....a lot of older folks like working. Unfortunately, a number of them are not physically able to continue with their life's occupation and need to get social security at age 62, or at least before the full retirement age. I'm still working, but at something totally different than during my professional career, and I will continue so long as I'm physically able and need the money. I expect my social security check to supplement my pension and income from my current jobs so that I can live in reasonable comfort for the next 20-30 years. I'll probably hold out on getting a social security check for as long as possible but, having two kids in college will put a serious strain on our finaces, so I may end up getting it at 62 or 63, depending on my health and ability to continue working.

is it really that hard to figure out? the masses will toil into their 70s while people like her are allowed to "earn" 400 mil by their 20s. the point is the injustice of it. if more of that 400 mil was in the proper hands, not raven's, chances are the masses wouldn't be asked to work into their 70s. take the money from pigs like her and put it into social security

I hear ya, Mace. My Mom is 70 years old and works a day-and-a-half a week to supplement her monthly retirement disbursement and Social Security. I’ve yet to hear her complain. That said, however, I am under zero illusion that working towards a fully-vested retirement age of 70 or 72 would most certainly put a physical strain on many people. My reply to Onions was more a jab at the Something-for-Nothingers and Redistribution-of-Wealth crowd bent on complaining about the “inequities” of our system.

No one is stopping YOU from going out and making your own $400 mil.

And putting the shoe on the other foot, how would YOU feel if everyone else decided you had too much money, and decided to lay claim to it?

Another word for that is "theft."

no matter what illegitimate laws state, the accumulation of 400 mil is theft in and of itself.

OK.

What is an acceptable amount of money a person should be "allowed" to accumulate?

$1 million?

$10 mil?

50 bucks?

I mean, since YOU decided that YOU get to decide, I'm sure you must have a number in mind.

That's a good start. I'm still trying to find out what makes people deserving as opposed to undeserving and who makes that determination. As far as I can tell there is nothing intrinsic to poverty that would make a person deserving.

you know the answer. her accumulation has harmed the greater good. her accumulation is not justified by the fact that millions of lemmings watch her bullshit on tv and buy her bullshit products. so she has a bunch of kids and tweens brainwashed. so fucking what. apparently you pretend to believe that such a "talent" is deserving of unlimited wealth. that outlook is precisely what has ruined this nation

how has she harmed the greater good?

how has she harmed anyone? last i checked, i was not obliged to give her one red cent, nor was anyone else.

the gubmint, on the other hand demands a fair bit of jack from me and a lot more from the KC scotts and 88s of the world. they also make it very difficult for many of us to go out there and generate wealth with a bidness of our own through mountains of regulation.

that is what is harming "the greater good" whatever the fukk that is.

No. YOUR outlook -- "I'm OWED" has ruined this country.

Government seizures of peoples' assets have ruined this country.

Government taking on the role of doing everyones' thinking for them has ruined this country.

To Mace and others considering working AND drawing SS income: be aware that you will pay a hefty portion of that additional income in federal taxes. Fortunately for me Florida does not have a state income tax.

Or those folks, we all have them in our family history, who sold everything they could and bought one way passage on a ship to cross the Atlantic and come here to make a new life for themselves and their future families.
