Ohio State president: TCU, Boise State don't belong in title game
Detroit News wire services / Detroit News wire services
Columbus, Ohio — Even if TCU and Boise State run the table, they still don't deserve to be in the Bowl Championship Series title game, Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee said Wednesday.
In an interview with the Associated Press, the president at the university with the largest athletic program in the country said that TCU and Boise State do not face a difficult enough schedule to play in the national championship game.
"Well, I don't know enough about the Xs and Os of college football," said Gee, formerly the president at West Virginia, Colorado, Brown and Vanderbilt universities. "I do know, having been both a Southeastern Conference president and a Big Ten president, that it's like murderer's row every week for these schools. We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day.![]()

So I think until a university runs through that gauntlet that there's some reason to believe that they not be the best teams to (be) in the big ballgame."
Gee, long an admirer of the BCS and the current bowl system, said he was against a playoff in the Football Bowl Subdivision.![]()

"If you put a gun to my head and said, 'What are you going to do about a playoff system (if) the BCS system as it now exists goes away?' I would vote immediately to go back to the bowl system," he said.
He said the current system is better for the student-athletes.
"It's not about this incessant drive to have a national championship because I think that's a slippery slope to professionalism,"![]()
![]()

he said. "I'm a fan of the bowl system and I think that by and large it's worked very, very well."
He cited Ohio State's presence in the 2007 national title game as an example.
The Buckeyes won their first 10 games that season to rise to No. 1 before losing 26-21 at home to unranked Illinois. They fell all the way to No. 8 in the BCS rankings.
A series of upsets over the final weeks of the regular season and in other team's conference championship games led to the Buckeyes climbing all the way back to the No. 1 spot in the final BCS rankings. They were matched against an LSU team with two losses.
Ohio State led 10-0 early only to have LSU come back and score the next 31 points in a 38-24 victory at the Louisiana Superdome.
"You know, it's a mystery," Gee said. "We were No. 1 then No. 11 then No. 7 and we ended up playing for the national championship. I think I kind of like that mixed-up mystery."![]()

While he was at Vanderbilt, Gee abolished the athletic department since it was underwritten by the university's general fund anyway. He said he has no problem with an Ohio State program that fields 36 intercollegiate varsity teams and has an annual budget exceeding $120 million.
"Here, athletics pays for itself and also pays for academic programs at the institution," he said. "The other thing, of course, that I take a look at and see how well we are doing in terms of that notion of balance, which is what I was all about at Vanderbilt, which I am all about here."
He said Ohio State's eighth-ranked football team, which plays rival Michigan on Saturday, is in the top 10 in the nation not only on the field but also in terms of academic progress.
"That's the kind of balance I want to have," he said.

Re: OSU Prez Gordon Gee is a piece of shit
Gee is an odd guy. he was the prez at Colorado in the McCartney era and is widely praised as the greatest thing since creepy japanese internet porn....for being the only CU prez to "get" the importance of athletics at a Research 1/AAU university. CU fan has a persecution complex about the evil, all-powerful and liberal faculty who militate endlessly for the sole purpose of undermining CU football. it's hilarious because CU faculty are a pretty powerless group at the admin level...and 95% of my "colleagues" could care less about football....they are utterly ambivalent....i bet no more than 3 of 10 could name half the teams in the Big XII or the Pac let alone dedicate their lives to the politically motivated subversion of CU football. But, Gee's CU tenure is seen as the Golden Era of admin support for CU football, Mac was able to get some iffy academic kids and borderline criminals (imo) into CU that wouldn't happen today because CU's admissions office hates football players, etc. etc.
Gee also was the prez at Vandy for a time, and i think when they stopped having an actual AD (edit: i see now the article says this)...so that would seem to testify to the opposite or at least that Gee's priorities (to even be at Vandy) were not so athletically inclined....despite Vandy's decent and sometimes very good hoops and baseball programs. obviously Vandy football is not the institution's highest priority as demonstrated by Vandy's futility on the gridiron since forever.
as a Vandy guy who has spent over half my life in Boulder, Gee has always been a perplexing and constant figure for me in the 80's and 90's. don't know much about him at tOSU. whether he's a careerist or actually an interesting guy, i dunno. i mistrust university admins with all my heart...so, there.

Re: OSU Prez Gordon Gee is a piece of shit
its' my opinion that the Big 10 peeps seem to overvalue the MAC just as SEC peeps overvalue the Troys and Murray State's of the world and Big XII peeps (minus Nebraska) overvalue the Tulsa and UTEP's and North Texas' of the world. So, playing a bunch of MAC schools OOC seems perfectly virtuous to Gee.....Miami (OH) produced both Woody and Bo...so, that's historical and means they are respectable etc.

Gee doesn't give a shit about the logistics of cfb. He doesn't want these smaller schools threatening a piece of his pie. Plain and simple.

As long as Gee is taking the anti-playoff stance, he needs to STFU about who makes it into the BCS.

And the same applies to BSU when they talk out one side of their mouth that teams are afraid to schedule them, but demand 7 figure payouts when someone does step up. Few programs are willing to agree to a home and home with them. Especially not the SEC. Hell, when was the last time UF even left their home state to play an ooc game?A home and home would seem to be enough...

UNA, Montana, and GV play for actual National Championships. Yes the money and notoriety would be awesome but I would rather see UNA win a real NC then some corporate garbage.Sudden Sam wrote:Okay, let's let every 4 year institution qualify. North Alabama, Montana, and Grand Valley State should be able to play for the BCS title. If they're undefeated, they should be ranked ahead of any 1 or 2 loss Big Ten or SEC or Big 12 schools, right?
I'm ready for a 16 team playoff. That's the only way to go.

these teams are suitable enough for D-1A whenever anyone needs to duck bcs-level competition, but god forbid one of them actually run a good football team out there. if gordon gee has an issue with boise getting mnc consideration then he should stop scheduling mac teams.Sudden Sam wrote:He may be a complete goober, but I believe his main point is that playing 8 games in a real conference is a bit more demanding than playing 8 junior college squads, then adding a couple of real games.

How, exactly, has ND "hijacked" the BCS? Start with the AQ rules. TCU and Boise State have an easier road than Notre Dame does.Screw_Michigan wrote:Your wanna-be alma mater's hijacking of the BCS is about the only thing making ND "credible" on a national level.Killian wrote:Your increased font size and multiple rollyeyes made for a very convincing argument.

I think Terry's consumed more Wild Turkey than actual turkey. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
Notre Dame has just as many BCS bowl appearances (3) as Boise St and TCU combined. Obviously ND will be overtaken this year in that department, but a lot of that has to do with their inability to field a competent product, and little to do with the "system" working against them. All they have to do is finish ranked in the top 8, which is hardly insurmountable when you consider no amount of continued suckitude seems to prevent them from being gifted top 25 preseason rankings.

You're refering to the SEC Championship Game, right?
The one that LSU couldn't edge 5 WHOLE teams out to get into?
But sure, a team that can't rise to the top of a 6 team division deserves a shot at the Trinket Bowl.

Try this scenario:
Boise state has already lost.
LSU crushes Arkansas 31-30 when the Razorback kicker slips while trying a 16 yard field goal with 5 seconds left.
South Carolina beats Allbarn on 12/4.
This makes LSU obvious choice for a MNC shot since they will then be by far the best 1 loss team and so superior to TCU and Oregon (they play in the SEC after all) that a national consensus will demand that they be ranked #1. The only remaining question is who they will beat in Glendale.

Wisconsin lost a close game to a very good TCU team.
Michigan State was embarrassed by a far superior team.
Michigan was embarrassed by a very average team (something Michigan fans are now accustomed to doing)
Penn State lost a good game to an average Florida team.
Northwesten put up a surprisingly (at least to me) good fight without their star QB against a poor Texas Tech team.
Illinois beat a not so great Big XII team.
Iowa beat a good, 10-2, Missouri team.
Without going all homer here, Iowa had the only good bowl win for the Big 10.....of course there were only two to pick from.....so far, anyway. tOSU is waiting in the wings and could change that with a win over Arkansas.
