Parents’ plan pays off for Lee’s Summit West offensive lineman

As Evan Boehm strides through the locker-room door, he approaches a reporter and extends his large right hand. Right then and there, anyone could see why Boehm is a big reason the Lee’s Summit West Titans are on the cusp of a football state title.
At 6 feet 4 and 305 pounds, Boehm, a junior left tackle, dwarfs friends, engulfs foes and inspires awe in opposing coaches who marvel at his size, footwork and nasty on-the-field demeanor.

All these qualities will be on display starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday, when the Titans take on Webster Groves for the Missouri Class 5 state championship at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

But before the game, Boehm wants to let others in on a little secret: He didn’t become the lineman he is today — a player being pursued by Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State and traditional powerhouses such as Oklahoma, Iowa, Wisconsin and Notre Dame — simply by chance. It’s not just genes or hard work, either.

He has soared to a higher level because of a decision made long ago by his parents, he said.

Before Evan Boehm became the centerpiece of a possible state championship team and one of the most heavily recruited linemen in the Midwest, he was just an oversized middle-school student who wanted nothing more than to play football. His father, Royce, played football in college and has coached the sport for 23 years — the last seven with Lee’s Summit West.

There was just one problem, though. Evan’s parents wouldn’t let him play football.

“I was dying to play,” said Evan, who recently was selected player of the year in the Suburban Conference Big Six. “In sixth grade, I told them that I’d do anything to play football. But they wouldn’t budge.”

Royce and Teresa, Evan’s mother, had their reasons. Royce drew upon his childhood and applied the same philosophy his own father had used with him.

“We wanted to play so bad growing up,” said Royce, who spent his childhood in Boonville, Mo., with two brothers. “By the time he let us play in eighth grade, we were hungry for it. Plus, it allowed our bodies to develop and mature enough to play the game safely.”

Evan’s parents’ original plan was to make him wait until the eighth grade, too. In the meantime, Royce encouraged him to play other sports, such as soccer and wrestling.

By the time Evan reached the seventh grade, however, Royce and Teresa found they could deny him no longer, and they let him join a youth football league in Lee’s Summit with coaches who focused on the fundamentals.

It didn’t take long for Royce and Teresa to see that they’d made the best possible decision for their son. Evan was a natural lineman — bigger than his peers, but with advanced agility and coordination developed through playing soccer. Youth wrestling had also taught him the importance of leverage and hand usage.

Evan developed quickly, which allowed him to start at guard on LS West’s varsity squad as a freshman. He’s been growing ever since, and this year, he anchors a close-knit offensive line. Evan and senior right guard Drew Padget, senior center Shelton Chism, junior left guard Caleb Foster and senior right tackle Brandon Klewer have helped pave the way for the Titans’ 13-1 season.

Evan said he now recognizes that his parents had his best interests at heart when they kept him out of football.

“I’m thankful for it now,” said Evan, who still wrestles and is one of the top heavyweights in the state. “The footwork I have because of soccer has really paid off, and wrestling has helped with my balance and speed off the line.”

And don’t forget about his play-to-the-whistle mentality. Evan has racked up more than 70 pancake blocks this year on the offensive line.

That, added to his size and skills, sums up to a bright future. His parents say they couldn’t be more pleased.

“We made the right decision,” Royce said. “It was one of those things where I needed him to trust in what I say, and just see what happens in the end.”

I don't condone this at all. I really HATE it when people post the email addresses or phone numbers when they're mad at another team, league or writer. You're just asking for the morons to emerge and make us look bad.

Unfortunately, the Star didn’t print position stats with the game summary this morning, but you gotta figure Rose had a big part in helping Rock State limit a Hazelwood Central juggernaut that averaged almost 35 points per game this season to only 7 points.

I did see that OU’s four-star big-get went out with a knee mid-way through the first half. Hate to see any kid get hurt even when they do happen to choose to play ball at an enemy school.

Nice to see all that high school hardware returned to its rightful westside owners....

While you can’t teach a kid a 95 mph fastball, I understand his family to have deep Husker ties. When asked why Bubba hadn’t considered Kansas or K-State before verbally committing to the Corn, his momma reportedly quipped, “Because we’re used to winning.”

Not gonna lie: I’ll circle the calendar if there’s a chance to see Nebraska’s Starling square off against the Illini’s Nathan Scheelhaase ('nother Rockhurst kid). Although Pinkel would’ve had to blow up the spread to accommodate their talents, I would’ve loved to seen either one of ‘em in black and gold. Then again, it ain’t like we’re settling with Corbin Berkstresser either, a great-looking prospect out of my hometown and Mizzou’s hand-picked heir-apparent to Blaine Gabbert…
