Miami (FL) cans Randy Shannon

Post by Screw_Michigan »

Per the ESPN ticker. I added the (FL) for emphasis.

It's about god damn time. What a horrible job he has done. I know Coker really fucked things up at the end of his tenure, but he still was given a pretty good situation.

It will be interesting to see who they go after. Should be a job a lot of coaches will want.

I wonder how high Greg Schiano will be on there list this time given the struggles Rutgers has had the last couple of years.

I can't recall another time when the big 3 in the state of Florida were all as mediocre as they are now.

There have been a couple years in that not-so-distant past this has happened. When Zook was at Florida there was a year or 2 where all 3 teams sucked.

Beyond that, though, I think you'd have to go back to the 1970's.

Bullshit. Randy ran the defense and the defense played pretty damn well overall. The powers that be took all the power to even create his own offensive philosophy with a coordinator of his choice away from him years ago when they forced him to hire Whipple whose offenses have sucked complete and utter donkey balls; their Olines are out of shape and undisciplined, their receivers run terrible routes, and whipple couldn't develop a quarterback to save his life. Randy Shannon never even had the chance to be successful as the head coach.

Someone is going to laugh all the way to the bank at Thug U when they gain one of the best defensive coaches in all of college football with Shannon on their staff.

Whipple cost them the game against us. Harris should not have been throwing the ball when they were in FG range.

I'll certainly take the result though.

This would be the perfect job for: Pete Carroll.

Let's face it, the guy bolted for the NFL just to avoid the disaster that was inevitably going to happen at USC. Just like the last time he was there, he probably doesn't see a long-term future as a head coach in the NFL.

Dude is in his element when he is coaching at the college level, preferably at a school with beach-front property. Miami is basically USC-East, and the fact that he was slick enough to elude all the collateral damage that came out of the Reggie Bush debacle, he is scot free to slide back into a BTPCFB job.

I can't see a reason why this wouldn't be a possibility.

We all know Randy Shannon is a great defensive coach. But he did not get the job done as a head coach. 28-22 is inexcusable at Miami. I don't care about all the excuses about who did what with the offense. It's his program and he is responsible for bringing in the right people to call the plays, etc...

He didn't get the job done. He had to go. Miami will be better off for it and so will Randy Shannon because, like you said, he'll go back to being a great defensive coordinator somewhere. Some coaches are just meant to be coordinators and not head coaches.

It's not a possibility because Miami isn't known to pay big bucks for coaches and Petey wants to be in the NFL. I think that is pretty obvious. Can't blame him. The NFL is where you prove how good of a football coach you really are.

The early reports are that they're interested in Mark Richt. That would be a great hire for both parties. Richt needs to get out of Georgia. He's done a great job down there in a tough conference. A couple of recruiting misses and bad breaks have brought them down the last couple of years, but he would be an excellent hire for The U. In fact, I would say it's their best hire.

If Richt goes to Georgia.......does Georgia try and steal Derick Dooley away from Tennessee? Doubtful, but I think it would be funny.

Not to mention that Richt played college ball at Miami. Blood is thicker than water.

I get what L45B was saying about Pete Carroll, but the NCAA would be all over Miami like stink on shit in that event. And it's not exactly like Miami hasn't had run-ins with the NCAA in the past. I think they steer far clear of Carroll, even if he's interested in the job.

That was exactly my point... it was never his program. He was forced by the AD into the Whipple hire.

Surprised no one has posted this yet, but it's all over the interwebs that Jon Gruden may be going to Miami.

I doubt Miami can float enough cash Gruden's way.

Gruden loves all the attention, but I highly doubt he'd want that job.

If it comes down to money, I'm pretty sure ESPN would match any offer Miami put on the table -- at least to the point where money was no longer the deciding factor.

I don't think Gruden takes the job, but no doubt both he and ESPN are loving the attention this is bringing.

This would seem to be a tailor-made job for Saban (sorry, Sam), although that's not to say that he'd take it.

The Donald apparently is lobbying for Mike Leach, although I'm not quite sure what his (the Donald's) connections to da U are. He graduated from Penn; of his three kids old enough to have attended college, two graduated from Penn and the other graduated from Georgetown. So unless he's donating mega bucks to da U, I guess that makes him nothing more than a prominent fan with a big mouth and a big bank account. Shouldn't be enough to give him much input into the hiring process.

Of the names I've heard floated so far, Mullen would appear to be the safest hire, although he's probably also the one with the lowest upside.

Screw, Screw, Screw. Couple, three points.

1. Not to speak for Killian (who, btw, doesn't need anyone to speak for him), but I'm reasonably certain he never said that ND is the only job Gruden would ever take.

2. Swarbrick never even interviewed Gruden for the ND job last year, so it wasn't exactly like Gruden was in position to take it but turned it down.

3. Coaches can, and often do, put an out clause in their contracts in the event certain jobs open up. For example, Lou Holtz had an out clause in his Minnesota contract for the ND job (which, in hindsight, is probably the only reason he left Arkansas for Minnesota in '83. Back then, going from Arkansas to Minnesota would have been considered a step down.) While I don't completely get the collective mancrush so many ND fans seem to have on Gruden, it's certainly possible that Gruden could take another coaching job and put an out clause in his contract for the ND job.

Coaches do this all the time. Urban has an out clause for Ohio State and Notre Dame. Not sure if he'd take either job if it were offered to him today.

How is this tailor-made for Saban?

Miami doesn't pay coaches jack squat, and Saban has already coached in that town- at a higher level........and he bolted out after 2 years.

I realize this is a struggling traditional power, and Saban has already rebuilt 2 of them, but no way would he even consider this job. Maybe if they would pay up. But they won't.
