Re: ND to the Sun Bowl
i think it's good that ND will play the game instead of the "decline" position when it comes to "lesser" bowls. Time for the Irish to re-enter the world of actual BTPCF instead of inhabiting myths of the past. Good for the seniors, extra practices, fans, etc.

Stanford got screwed.
A win over VaTech won't enhance their cred one bit, plus they have to go all the way to fucking Florida. At least they're not playing UConn.
Stanford - Wisky whould have been a great matchup. Stanford - OU would have been better than VaTech. Really, they should have found a way to put the two non-top 10 teams in the same game.

Don't fucking sit there and agree that "it's good for the seniors" out of one side of your fucking mouth, while whining like a bitch about the bowl system out of the other.
Dear god, you just laid down an outrageous example of KYOA.

Probably not.
We're talking ACC here. The down side is a lot bigger than the upside for Stanford. Not saying that VaTech is a bad team but a #4 loss to #13 would look pretty bad, a win not nearly as impressive as if they were playing a 1 loss Big 10 team or even Okie. And in Florida there's a definite geographical disadvantage.Just sayin' - the Hokies have quietly whipped everybody's ass since the James Madison throw-up.

I had thought of trying to go down for the game, as tickets start as little as $15. But there doesn't seem to be any good way to get to El Paso, plus the things I've heard about the place. I have a cousin who used to live in Albuquerque, but that was a long time ago when she was getting a Master's degree in Art History from UNM (one of the few schools in the country that offered that degree). Besides, Albuquerque is a decent haul from El Paso, about 260 miles or so. There doesn't seem to be any way to get to El Paso and back for < $500. So it looks like I'll probably be watching the game on TV.

They declined a bowl because they thought it to be "lesser" once in the last 40+ years. They declined last year because they were going through a coaching change and the team voted not to go.King Crimson wrote:i think it's good that ND will play the game instead of the "decline" position when it comes to "lesser" bowls. Re: ND to the Sun Bowl
fair enough. point taken. btw, by all accounts the Sooners who made the trip to El Paso last year seemed to have enjoyed it a lot. Sun Bowl has been around for a long time and apparently they put out a pretty good spread.....from reading the OU homer boards from last year. Can't beat the food in El Paso.Killian wrote:They declined a bowl because they thought it to be "lesser" once in the last 40+ years. Re: ND to the Sun Bowl
In my opinion, this is the best possible outcome. As Terry said, ND gets to go to a bowl game with some history instead of going to the Poulin Weed-eater Independence Bowl (‘sup 1997), and they get to play a team that they have a history with, and that they will be adding to the schedule in 2012. Also, this saves ND from getting ass raped by Nebraska in a bowl game.

Re: ND to the Sun Bowl
It also leaves the Champs Sports Bowl option on the table for next year, at least. Other than that, our only bowl tie-in is with the Pinstripe Bowl, which is only a contingent option (i.e., we go there if the Big XII doesn't have a sufficient number of bowl-eligible teams to fill that slot), but starting next year that could be a realistic option if there isn't some more bowl reshuffling in the interim.Killian wrote:In my opinion, this is the best possible outcome. Imho, the Champs Sports Bowl wanted to leave the option on the table a bit longer as well, particularly since they had the option of taking West Virginia this year. Had this been Year Four of the deal, the Champs Sports would have taken us. But it was Year One.

What does this even mean? Either it's an interesting match-up or it isn't. If you're referring to the game itself, I suppose it has the "potential" to be interesting, much in the same way any other bowl games does.Terry in Crapchester wrote:This one has potential to be interesting.
Re: ND to the Sun Bowl
Not sure it'll be much different from the regular season. Stanford playing in Miami will nearly be the equivalent of playing a home game, as far as fan support goes.Mikey wrote:And in Florida there's a definite geographical disadvantage.

Re: ND to the Sun Bowl
This was one of the most intense rivalries in college football for a time, albeit very short-lived by most rivalry perspectives. It was a long-term matchup for awhile, but never really developed into "rivalry" status until Miami developed into a power in the 80's. I was a student at ND when this one heated up, so of course this pairing has my attention, moreso than would, say, a ND-Maryland or ND-North Carolina State matchup.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:What does this even mean? Adding to all of that is the fact that this will be the first matchup between these programs in 20 years.
Of couse, any bowl game can make for interesting play. Or not. It feels good, for a change, to be the team with the settled coaching situation coming into the game.
Miami is a much better team with Jacoury (sp?) Harris than without him. Personally, I'd like to see him play for that reason.

I get the history. Like I said, either it's interesting or it isn't. Don't know where all this "potential" comes into play unless Jimmy Johnson and Lou Holtz plan on calling plays from the sidelines.

If it weren’t for the fucked up computer rankings, Stanford would have finished 5th in the BCS, and they would have been on the outside looking in. You're lucky they're going where they are. At the same time I would have preferred to get Stanford in the Rose Bowl over TCU.Mikey wrote:Stanford got screwed.

Re: ND to the Sun Bowl
i think Stanford-Va Tech is a pretty interesting game. Despite having an excellent season, Stanford needs to take the next step. Va Tech and Beamer have something to prove (post Boise, JMU) and they've "been there" before. to be the man, you got to beat the man.

3rd. In 2003, I was a student at the Army's Sergeant Major Academy there at Ft Bliss. Only thing that El Paso had going in its favor was easy access to Mexico. Unfortunately, active duty personnel were banned from going. Last I heard, they still are due to the drugs/kidnapping/murder issues there.L45B wrote:Can't disagree with Jon on this one. The "Notre Dame" rule is a rule for independents. Notre Dame is just the most high profile of that small group. Next year, the Notre Dame rules apply to BYU as well.Felix wrote:I'll always have serious problems with a team for which a specific rule in the BCS "rules" has been written....

You know what, I take that back. I don't think any independent would get an automatic bid if they were ranked in the top 8, although I could be wrong.

Yep. Went to the Sun Bowl with my dad back in 1995 against Washington. The stadium was brutal and the town smelled like balls and there was nothing to do. I think every Iowa fan we talked to down there complained about how bad it sucked. That tells you how bad El Paso is if Iowans are bitching about it.L45B wrote:Can't disagree with Jon on this one. So Jon, if memory serves, you'd a been about 15 at the time. And your most vivid memory is the musky scent of sweaty balls, of which you have since become well acquainted. Or were you already familiar with that smell?
Re: ND to the Sun Bowl
I doubt that even at 15, Jon caught a whiff of sweaty balls and felt like he had nothing to do.

Umm, you do know that there is also a specific rule for teams from conferences that do not have an automatic bid, right? And you also know that within the next few years, both Utah and TCU are moving to conferences with automatic BCS bids? And that BYU is becoming independent?Felix wrote:I'll always have serious problems with a team for which a specific rule in the BCS "rules" has been written....

So, realistically speaking, who's left for that rule to apply to?
And you also realize that that rule is actually more lenient than is the rule in place for ND, right?
The hypocrisy behind this comment is breathtaking. I would've thought you were intelligent enough to realize that.....
