How many people can be expected to shell out that much money?
Hell, WVU lost money when they played in the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago and they have a good travelling fan base.

Or you have to live in a non-transient backwater shithole (i.e. Alabama) where nobody ever leaves and nobody ever relocates to.

There is no way UCONN can sell their allotment when you can buy tickets to this game on Stubhub for 15 bucks. And that's no exaggeration. There are tickets available for $15.MuchoBulls wrote:How many people can be expected to shell out that much money?

Nobody really makes money off the bowls. Most teams take a hit, and only make up for it with conference revenue sharing.Sudden Sam wrote:Back to the topic: if a school's fans travel well, they won't lose money. Or not too much anyway.

Re: Poor UConn
disagree about UCONN. they've done a very admirable job growing their program over the last decade. kinda sucks for them to be made a poster-child for a garbage BCS system and the eminently flaw AQ system.Papa Willie wrote: As far as UConn - fuck 'em. If you can't bark with the big dogs, get the fuck off the porch. The only reason the Big East is in that bowl is because of the fucking media (which is based in the NE). I actually think it's kind of funny. :D
i don't care that they are playing OU and i hope OU wins by 50, this isn't about that. Edsall is a good coach yet 8-4 is 8-4 in BCS terms. i get that.
they must have a strangely configured fan base. in a region where there are many many better schools, a smallish state public school with very little national appeal or alum base outside Connecticut and the immediate NE i'd imagine. unlike UCONN hoops....which is national and have some pull for peeps who have no connection with the university, i doubt there are many crossover (bball->football) fans simply based on the school. there are a lot of Duke or UNC bball fans for a variety of reasons (winning, #1, of course but how that winning is framed by individual fans with no tie to the school is differential: Coach K humpers, street cred, MJ, team bling gear, Cameron Indoor, Dick Vitale's legion of Duke catamites, etc)....that aren't *of necessity* Duke or UNC football fans. UCONN can't possibly have many crossover football fans with no other tie to the school. additionally, since the program is so young....can't have too many fans over the age of 50 (maybe).....at the Fiesta, there will be OU fans who saw Bud Wilkinson's teams play (and still think it's all been downhill since....).

Re: Poor UConn
One of the big secrets about the bowl games is that very few of them sell out. I remember walking up to the ticket booth for the Gator Bowl in '89 with a bunch of people and buying tickets there, at face value. And it was something of a big game -- Georgia was playing (Georgia actually has a pretty solid fanbase in Jacksonville, the Florida-Georgia game is played there annually), and it was Vince Dooley's final game as coach before retiring. But plenty of tickets available.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:There is no way UCONN can sell their allotment when you can buy tickets to this game on Stubhub for 15 bucks. And that's no exaggeration. And since I mentioned that story, I suppose I ought to respond to Sam and 'Spray. I was stationed in Jacksonville for 3 1/2 years while in the Navy, and couldn't get out of there fast enough when my time was up. Jacksonville had some nice things going for it, but the bottom line was that I was a Yankee. A stranger in a strange land. And there were reminders of that everywhere. I had to leave.

They do. I am not kidding when I say that they had more of their fans attend the Men's and Women's basketball games here respectively, than they had 2 weeks ago with a BCS bowl berth on the line. They might not have had more than 700 fans at the football game.King Crimson wrote:they must have a strangely configured fan base. in a region where there are many many better schools, a smallish state public school with very little national appeal or alum base outside Connecticut and the immediate NE i'd imagine. unlike UCONN hoops....which is national and have some pull for peeps who have no connection with the university, i doubt there are many crossover (bball->football) fans simply based on the school. there are a lot of Duke or UNC bball fans for a variety of reasons (winning, #1, of course but how that winning is framed by individual fans with no tie to the school is differential: Coach K humpers, street cred, MJ, team bling gear, Cameron Indoor, Dick Vitale's legion of Duke catamites, etc)....that aren't *of necessity* Duke or UNC football fans. USC and Boston College played in front of a 1/4 full stadium last year in San Fagcastro, USC actually negotiated that they would not accept the bowl bid if they had to sell more than 5,000 seats because they knew their fans would not go to a December game that meant nothing

Re: Poor UConn
OU was about a 6 point fave in that game (5.5 as i recall). not the SUPER CRAZY upset people remember. OU was ranked between about 15-25 all year. after defeating NU in the Big XII Championship, OU moved into the top 10 for the first time since dropping from #10 to #15 after a lackluster home opener against UAB. Two weeks later OU lost at Oregon and to Texas. Hardly a "vintage" OU team and had to spend the rest of the season to get back even to the low teens. People act like Boise beat one of Wilkinson's mid-50's teams.Papa Willie wrote: Of course - I remember everybody saying the same thing about a lil' ole' team that had funky blue grass a few years ago. OU was supposed to pound the shit out of them, too.
by contrast, the Bama team that lost to Utah was undefeated in the MG and had lost only to the eventual national champs in the MG conference championship....and were squarely in the top 5 for the last third of the season...and considered to be legit NC contenders.

You are correct concerning transitive property's relation to CFB or team sports in general.Dinsdale wrote:Papa Willie wrote: It'd be huge. You are not so correct in taking the huskies (snicker). I would not take the huskies until the line reaches three and a half buhzillion and the OU plane crashes and they have to play the band. even then, i'd be hesitant.
i really do hope the huskies lose their motherfukking ass on this one. they have no bidness going there as they are the suck this season. so what if they won a conference that, in a good year, is the suck at BTPCF. they beat NOBODY this season. i believe michigan was the only decent team they played. i watched the finally against USF. they have an OK D, a decent runner, but absolutely no quarterback. i'd like to think their kicker will just nail 13 fity yarders, but, i doubt they'll get that close. he's good, but doesn't quite have the foot to hit from his own 12 yard line.
they should have gotten one of those arrangements where they say, look, we suck, our alleged fans know we suck and aren't gonna put out the jack to fly cross country to watch a prison raping.
actually, they should have just had the class to say, thanks but no thanks. we don't belong in a top bowl this year.
maybe the fukking mensa's running the NCAA will finally figure out that a real playoff system will work.
yeah, right. that'll happen. their incompetence level approaches federal gubmint levels.

15 bucks? 700 in travel, food, and lodging expenses (still a hell of a bargain to go to AZ this time of year) and I'm damn near considering watching OU pummel UConn. I predict the tailgating with OU fans will be same as it was in Norman.

at least you acknowledge, however indirectly, that you belong in the Music City Bowl most years. It's important to understand your station in the grand scheme of things.Papa Willie wrote:Relax, buddy. Don't mean a thing other than the fact that OU is overrated every year and playing in places they shouldn't be. :DKing Crimson wrote:so, you favor the current bowl system and meaningless bowls instead of a playoff....given your pride in winning in winning the Music City, Chick Fil-A, and Outback bowls....whoop dee fuckin' doo. i know i'd rather win the Music City bowl or beat N'Western in OT than play for the National title. that's what makes a helluva season, awwright.Papa Willie wrote: Auburn is 5-1 in bowl games within the same time period.

logically speaking, it is impossible to argue coherently that OU both "chokes" in big games *and* is overrated and "playing in places they shouldn't be". but, in your plastic, malleable rhetoric of SEC homerism as the dominant trope, you execute the contradiction that undermines your own position without knowing it, yet again. also, painting yourself as a poster with a cool, collected demeanor requiring others to "relax", as you say, is high comedy.
truth is: sadly, you've fallen victim to VCS. Vito Corleone Syndrome. Since your team has a shot at the Big Prize, you seem to elide their on-field success with your own misguided perception that your takes are bullet-proof and overall "worldview" confirmed. Your team is good, your takes are still the same....there is no connection between the two. like a schizophrenic, you perceive Auburn and SEC related cosmic order everywhere when there is none. And, sadly, with all the delusional zeal of a jr. high girl who thinks the senior QB on the football team "really loves her" after he pulls off the condom in the backseat of the Buick....you continue to pound out the same homer-inflected, flame-bait drivel.

so, you are saying Auburn didn't play in the Music City, Chicken Sammie, and Outback bowls to rack up 3 of those 5 big bowl wins that I'm supposed to be really impressed by? the bowl system is meaningless. it's like 2-3 years ago when M2 was in here prancing around about the Pac's undefeated bowl record. it doesn't matter. 2-5 doesn't piss me off nearly as much as you'd like to think. Conference championships are far more enduring.
and, since you evaded the point altogether. Stoops, who you seem to think is hilarious to ridicule for losing in a BCS game while Auburn beats Northwestern in OT....is STILL more successful than any coach to ever coach at Auburn. Stoops is money in non-BCS Auburn type bowls, too. he's 3-1....and two of those W's are the Cotton and Holiday, comparable to any of the Auburn "big" bowl wins of your beloved 5-2 time period (minus the meaningless Sugar win over Va Tech)
