Decisions, decisions
My first anniversary of retirement is coming up on New Year's Eve and I've spent the past year making different types of decisions. After 34 years of deciding what probation or parole violations warrant locking a guy up, trying to get guys jobs so they could pay their victim restitution, fines, and supervision fees, and going home with a headache more nights than not, I thought I could get away from all of that decision making with retirement. So, while most of you young bucks have headed back to work today, I'm stuck making the decision of whether I'm going to see True Grit at 2:10 or 4:30. Who knew that retirement required so much thought?

Go to the 2:10. At your age you'll be asleep before the end of the 4:30 show.

Good point, but 2:10 is probably too soon after lunch and I'd miss half of the movie running to the restroom to take a piss.Goober McTuber wrote:Go to the 2:10. At your age you'll be asleep before the end of the 4:30 show.

No brainer..2:10 showing. If you do the 4:30 show, you will miss the early bird senior discount at the buffet. Don't you have yard or two to mow today ?Mace wrote:Good point, but 2:10 is probably too soon after lunch and I'd miss half of the movie running to the restroom to take a piss.Goober McTuber wrote:Go to the 2:10. Another good point, Derron, but these days I'm eating healthier and avoiding the buffets. I've yet to take advantage of any senior discounts too. Call it denial.Derron wrote:No brainer..2:10 showing. If you do the 4:30 show, you will miss the early bird senior discount at the buffet.
The snow and 19 degree temps have pretty much put an end to the mowing business in Iowa until April, so I'm working as a substitute teacher during the winter months and identifying future clients that will be headed to my old office in a couple of years. Funny how easy it is to pick them out.Don't you have yard or two to mow today ?

I retired from 32 years of teaching in 1994. I spent a while living the "6 Saturdays and a Sunday" life style, but got a neat job at Cornell University helping to develop a method of raising Asian Long-Horn Beetles for research. I left that job in 2001 when we moved here. I went back to living the Mr.Retired life till a couple years ago when I got another job at Edison State College here (less than one mile from my house) as the science lab technician. I'll probably stay at this job till I can't do it anymore or they kick me out the door. Retirement is OK, but for me it is a bit boring. It was not easy getting a good job after retirement, but if you are patient and do a lot of searching you can find the right shaped slot for you.

Re: Decisions, decisions
I agree. When I was in my 30's, I thought retirement would mean lots and lots of golf, fishing, and maybe a little travel. Now that I've been retired for a year, I golfed about 6-7 times last summer, have yet to fish, and have only traveled to Ann Arbor to see an Iowa football game. I planned on starting a lawn care business in retirement for about the last 10 years I worked, and decided to be a substitute teacher during the winter. So far, it's been great. I like the extra income and getting out of the house. I love the lawn care business and my years of experience taking care of baseball fields has been a big plus.....and the people who saw my baseball fields feel confident in calling me to take care of their lawns. I invested quite a bit of money on equipment last winter/spring but this year should be far more profitable and is something I'd like to do until I'm no longer able to do the work. I'll be bidding on a high school sports complex this year and, if I get it, will spend a lot of my summer doing what I've done for the past several years. So far, retirement has been anything but boring. I might also slow down a bit when I get my kids through college and actually do some traveling then. I also got back into football officiating, doing some lower level (Jr High and JV games) and will be a sub on a varsity crew next season.Wolfman wrote:I retired from 32 years of teaching in 1994. What the hell were you thinking going to see this? I was invited to go along with some relatives to see this on Christmas night, but I was smart enough to say "fuck no, you kidding me?", and stayed home.Just don't go see the "Little Fockers" POS. There wasn't a funny line of dialogue or a funny moment in the entire movie. Can't believe De Niro or Hoffman would have anything to do with something so weak.
Re: Decisions, decisions
True Grit is the one movie out now that I really want to see.
Is there a matinee price at 2:10 that's not available at 4:30? Gotta be frugal and stuff on a fixed income, you know.
BTW, what does it cost to go to a movie in your parts? Do your theaters have reclining seats and fold-down cup holder arm rests?
Or do they look more like this:

We're going to a neighboring town for the movie and, yes, they have reclining seats and everything. Runnin' water in the restrooms too! :) They charge $7 at this theater. Our local theater charges $4 for adults, $3 for anyone under age 18. All concessions at our local theater are 75 cents.Mikey wrote:True Grit is the one movie out now that I really want to see.

My family went to Little Fokkers on Saturday. The kids thought it was funny, as did the wife. I chose not to go, as I've seen the other Fokker movies and didn't find them funny. The only reason that I would have gone would be to spend some family time with my kids but, since they're both on break from school right now, I'm getting plenty of that without watching some horseshit movie. Besides, I already knew that we'd be seeing True Grit this week.

There's actually two movies out right now that I want to see, True Grit and The Fighter. Never thought I'd see the day Hollywood could pull that off.

Yep, The Fighter will be the next movie on my list.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:There's actually two movies out right now that I want to see, True Grit and The Fighter. Never thought I'd see the day Hollywood could pull that off.

Re: Decisions, decisions
I'm not familiar with what that Reese Witherspoon movie is but I can't imagine it being any worse than what the new Fockers movie sounds like.My wife wanted to see that Reese Witherspoon shit and I said hell no...get a friend to go to that. So then she suggested the LF based on a friend (whose opinion we used to respect) saying it was funny. She''s been on a really bad streak renting movies and picking 'em out at the theater. I called and told her she owes us $14.
There is no excuse I can provide for agreeing to see that shit. I just hope I can save some of y'all the pain and money.
And wait a second........you trust a female's opinion on a comedy movie? Comedy to women = Freddie Prinze Jr type shit. Women have the worst sense of humor (ok, well most of them). Chick flicks are called "romantic comedies" because women laugh at that gay shit........then they cry at the end. Then you fuck them. Hard. Twice.
Go to a bar, hit on a girl. Tell her the LAMEST jokes ever (non-offensive ones, of course). She will die laughing at them. Tell those same jokes to a dude and they will kick you in the junk- deservedly so.
Good comedy movies:
Major League, Clerks, The Jerk, The Hangover, Man with 2 brains, Naked Gun, the ending of Old Yeller, etc...
Good comedy movies........to women:
She's All That, anything with Ben Stiller, Parenthood (i think that's the name of that gay Steve Martin movie), pretty much anything with Jason Biggs in it, etc...
Re: Decisions, decisions
Yeah, I forgot about that one. Would like to see it but prolly won't convince the wife to go so we'll wait until Netflix has it.Mace wrote:Yep, The Fighter will be the next movie on my list.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:There's actually two movies out right now that I want to see, True Grit and The Fighter. Re: Decisions, decisions
I'm not in the lawncare business, but I could make decent coin for clearing driveways after a big snow with the plow I bought last year. I just am too damn nice to do that, I guess. We had a big snow last year. I saw my neighbor's wife shoveling her drive and drove the plow to her house after I had finished mine. Took me 5 minutes to clear what would have taken her half a day and some chiropractor work. Next thing I know, I see her neighbor struggling on his drive so I go clear it too. Ended up clearing 15 drives all in a couple hours that morning. Though I never asked for anything for it, I got a few cases of wine and beer delivered which I served at the next Thirsty Thursday I hosted.Goober McTuber wrote:That’s what all the yard care companies around here do. The first was actually watchable. As is the case with most sequels... the 2nd one sucked ass. I believe I turned it off after 10 minutes. I am sure the 3rd installment is even worse.
I can't remember the last 'comedy' sequel that wasn't horrific.

Enjoy.
Just finished reading the novel. I received it for Christmas and picked it up last night thinking that I might read a few pages... and finished it about six hours later. Excellent read, and much of the dialogue was I remembered it from the John Wayne original movie.

I've only seen the original. Not sure how you can replace the Duke with the Dude, but whatever.

Re: Decisions, decisions
Got back from the movie a bit ago. It was good, and Jeff Bridges was good, but he is no John Wayne. It pretty much followed the story line of the first movie with a few exceptions and a slightly different ending. I would recommend it but I doubt you can watch it without making comparisons to the Duke. Matt Damon was better than Glen Campbell, imo, and at least you didn't think there was a gay Texas Ranger in the movie.Goober McTuber wrote:I've only seen the original. As for blading snow? No thanks. I'm not going out in the cold at 5:00 a.m. to blade driveways so people can get to work, getting stuck in drifts, and buying more equipment just to make a few bucks. I'm retired, not broke....and I may be retarded, but I'm not stupid. I've helped out some of my neighbors by blowing snow out of their driveways and their sidewalks for no charge but I wouldn't want to do it as a business venture.
