Jan. 10, BCS game
good thing the university presidents shoot down any playoff talk with stern talk of defending the scholar-athlete's classroom or holiday experience in the name of "integrity" (in addition to vague appeals to "pageantry"). BCS championship is 10 days after New Year's Day and a slew of conference championship games tacked on in December on the back-end of Fall semester. while arguing the opposite of what they do, they've managed to extend the season for at least two extra weeks. University of Denver starts tomorrow and CU on the 10th. While i realize a school like DU is not playing in the BCS game anytime soon, in principle, other quarter system schools that do have football probably start up and their guys would be missing the first week of a 10 week quarter. 10% of the entire term. that would SEEM like the kind of thing the Prezzes were loathe allow with a playoff system. When do the Cal system schools start? They are on the quarter system.
could there be any more false logic at work?

Re: Jan. 10, BCS game
It might be the flimsiest of all BCS honk arguments, especially when you consider the lower divisions run a playoff through finals...and those kids are true student-athletes. Not to mention these same presidents seem to have no issues with a college basketball season that requires much more missed class time.
Re: Jan. 10, BCS game
There is no doubt that ESPN scheduled the bowls as they did in order to set the table for a playoff schedule.
Auburn's classes start the day of the MNC. They asked professors to be lenient on attendance.
Personally, I'm in the Bowls + 1 camp, but finish the bowls by New Year's weekend or Day.

Re: Jan. 10, BCS game
A drunken let's turd could come up with a christer zionazi conspiracy explanation that makes more sense than the absolutely laughable student integrity explanation.
maybe a few more debacles like UConn getting a BCS slot will convince these morons how fuct they are.
8 teams, 3 weeks with the last game on new years. Really not hard to do the math on this one. Anyone not in the top 8 really wouldn't have much of an argument. Not that they wouldn't try.
$$$ are the only thing that will get it done. Hopefully Cuban will throw enough of them out there to get the conference whores interested. He might be a dick, but, he's a dick with deep pockets looking to get rid of a ridiculous broken system.

Re: Jan. 10, BCS game
i usually assign a short writing assignment on Day 1due on the 2nd day of class or a quiz on the first Friday....that weeds em out. 5-8 kids will have dropped the class on their lap-top before class is over. seriously, you have 39 or something when class starts at 9 AM (say)....check the roster on-line at 10:15 and it's down to 32 or something.
the assignments are brainless, require almost no preparation, but man it's all you need to run off those middling sorority, complain and lie and specious, unconvincing flirty type headaches from the get-go. only way to fly. i don't even talk about the syllabus until Monday of week 2.

Not all UC schools are on the quarter system, IIRC, but some are. My two kids are at UC Irvine and they start tomorrow. Finally getting rid of them this morning, BTW.
Another thing about the quarter system - you can't afford to miss the first class in most courses, much less the first week. Even the best students have to hit the ground running or they're in danger of falling hopelessly behind. I'm sure they can make allowances for star athletes, though.

Re: Jan. 10, BCS game
After Jan 1 I've pretty much checked out of college football. Time for basketball. I'll still watch the rest of the games, but the shine has definitely worn off by then. Even in the earlier days of the BCS when the game was played on the 3rd or thereabouts, that was acceptable, but 10 days later is absurd.

Re: Jan. 10, BCS game
Prior to the creation of the BCS Title Game, it was pretty simple: Rose at 4, One of the other three bowls at 8:30, Another BCS bowl the following night and the championship game three days after NYD. Now that ESPN and the bowls have conspired to drag out the season just so every shit bowl game can get a prime time appearance, it really kills the enthusiasm unless your team is in the title game.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:After Jan 1 I've pretty much checked out of college football. Re: Jan. 10, BCS game
That's the sad part. The intent is to drag out the season, and yet NYD, traditionally one of the best sports days of the year, is an epic clusterfuck of a fail. Four games on at 12 EST? I guess that's the only good part of all the games sucking -- you don't feel like you missed anything.

Re: Jan. 10, BCS game
I'm still trying to figure out exactly how this current system is any better than our old system (excluding financial reasons)??
Let's see here......
The old system was based 100% on human voters and there was no title game.
The current system has a phony title game that is based on human voters and screwy computer formulas.
3 straight years an unbeaten team that won a BCS bowl has not been awarded a national title.
I like the old system better because the bowl matchups were better. There is no national championship game with this system anyways. They may claim there is one, but there is not. TCU is unbeaten and defeated an 11-1 Wisconsin team in the Rose Bowl but they will be left out of the title picture. Boise State won a BCS bowl last year and went unbeaten. Utah beat a 12-1 Alabama team in a BCS bowl the year before and went unbeaten.
What is the difference between these scenarios and years like 1994 and 1997 where there were unbeatens that never faced off?
There will never be a playoff system in our lifetime, so just go back to the old system with a couple of minor changes. Instead of having a Big East representative in the BCS, just put an additional at-large team in there. Then get rid of about a dozen bowl games. I think the NCAA has officially ruined the excitement of college football. The bullshit argument about how "the regular season matters more than other sports" is garbage. It matters for elite programs but it doesn't matter for anyone else based on the theory that it matters because of national title importance.
Can't wait for real football postseason to start next week.
