Well not quite. Read the rule again.

If team A fails to score a TD on it's opening possession then team B has the opportunity for possession for a chance to complete a score and end the game. Guess what, when an offensive team gets tackled in the end zone, it has failed to score a TD on it's possession and by recording a safety, team B has recorded a score and ended the game. That's all that matters. No TD on opening possession? Next team to score wins.

A safety instantaneously ends possession of team and A records a score for team B. Game over.

What would a team that just recorded 2 points AND stopped the other team from scoring a TD by ending their possession have to gain by receiving a free kick???? You do know that all the receiving team has to do is call for a fair catch once the ball is in the air and run the fuck in the opposite direction of the ball and the game is over. Right?

The question is, what would that team have to LOSE. What if the person returning the kick is confused, doesn't know the rules, and backpeddles, changes directions and gets tackled in his own end zone. Then it's 2-2.

The rules are confusing enough for something like that to happen.

Either way, the game shouldn't automatically END as sudden death on a safety.
