for years i worked in professional kitchens and we mostly listened to Norteno and other northern mexico musical stylings. some of it i've grown to actually like quite a bit. but, anyway, the one non-accordian option permissable to the pirates i worked witn was oldies radio. occasionally one of we gringos would bring in the best of james brown or something....and, mysteriously, those tapes would either disappear or get mangled in some way....during a shift the owner of said tape wasn't working. "la pinche machina..."
they knew those oldies songs. and, over time, i don't ever need to hear ain't no mountain high enough again....but some of the songwriting on those so-called "oldies" from the 50's/60's are pretty tight and soulful (even though most were doen by professional songwriters and not the artists themselves).
but badfinger is weird, since a lot their tunes would not sound out of place on a Big Star record. some are really quite good pop songs. i guess i don't understand why they are classified as "oldies" rather than "classic rock".
sure, it's mostly clear channel demographics....regionally. for instance the venerable "oldies" station in OKC (KOMA) is mostly older stuff with a healthy mix of early doo-wop.....while the Denver oldies station plays a lot of 70's cheese...and the short versions of light my fire, black magic woman.
but, i picked up badfinger's best of for a couple bucks at the local place...it's awrright.
no matter what is nice fucking tune. as is day after day and come and get it.
badfinger

i still think you could drop "no matter what" onto the first song of side two of Radio City.....ya know.
Big Star is by far the superior outfit, but it's till knida interesting.

i didn't mean it like that: it was a complement to both.
Chris Bell's solo record is pretty cool.

big star is much better than badfinger. bf is cool--with some high moments, but big star is really great songwriting. for the first two records--solid.
