Bird nest in my truck

Post by Trampis »

Sounds like a bad country rap song doesnt it?

Anyways, this little basterd has been building a nest in the engine compartment of my new pick em up truck for the past three weeks.

Image

First he lands on the roof or hood, surveys the surroundings for danger, takes a shit, and then enters the engine compartment through the wheelwell.

This isnt me(Im a dude), but a representation of my vehicle and the frustration I feel.

Image

So, I finally had had enough yesterday afternoon and retrieved my trusty but rusty 20 gauge, found a bird that looked like the one that was violating my vehicle, and like Randy Johnson, plucked it from the sky with one shot.

Now, I wait to find out if I excuted the right bird. I will not feel any guilt if I excuted the wrong bird, ...as all birds are guilty by association.

Yes, I did that, EVERY DAY for the past 3 weeks! It was a routine of mine. Go out, pop the hood and get the nest out before i start the engine. Next day do the same damn thing, day after day after day. Little fucker kept rebuilding the nest every morning. I dont usually go anywhere in my truck in the morning so he would have plenty of time to build before i made my afternoon jaunt to town. It never found somewhere else to nest.

Update. Parked in a different spot last night and I have a new nest.

European Starling. Nasty mutherfukkers, for sure.

They all should be rounded up and sent to Birdschwitz, for the Final Solution.

Despicable bird for sure...my neighbor does not control starlings nesting in his barn and house eves, lets them steal cat food off the fucking porch, and they shit on my cars and forage in my grass, orchard etc.

I started picking them off with a .22 about a month ago..I have whacked over 50 of them to date, and they just keep coming. Snipe them out of my office windows out to about 40 yards with a HR 17. Got 2 today already.

Got 3 starlings today with of all things a 20 gauge shotgun,... dead is dead. I was feeling non compliant this morning. Basterds are trying to nest in a space right above my front porch. Also pulled a nest out of a tractor and 2 out of a baler.

How many do you have so far this spring deron?

Anyway, as I'm cursing and swearing underneath my car, about six crows are gathering in the woods across the street...cawing their asses off.

I swear that they were deliberately fucking with me because they knew that I was in a pissy mood.

I don't have any small arms that I could have used to scatter them. So I grabbed a few rocks and started flinging them up into the trees.

They didn't budge. :x

So I just had to continue on, cursing and swearing, sweating like a pig with motor oil all over my arms. :brad:

That was my birthday too, come to think of it.

So anyway, the crows have been showing up regularly. And just the other day, I noticed two turkey buzzards in the trees.

NOW I'm begining to worry.

A bad omen perhaps?
We can only hope.

Nest or birds...?? Took out 3 birds yesterday and one feral cat. Feral cat was sniffing around the wifes chicken coop and she ordered its execution. I carried it out. Cocksucking starling tore off a piece of flashing on my house and pulled insulation out and tried, I say tried to make a nest. Shot his ass off the roof and covered the hole. No nest's of starlings allowed on my property. Neighbors have at least 4 in their barn, and the other side as at least 2.

Got one starling with a pellet gun out the kitchen window this morning.

Put some dog or cat food out as bait. The fuckers cannot resist it and will gather to take it back to the nests. Shot gun then from about 15 yards and you will drop multiples of them. # 7 or 8 shot works best.

I missed this thread the first time around. So what does one do to get rid of moles excavating the backyard? Those fuckers have torn my shit up the past 2 years. I've tried putting poison pellets down their holes, they must use them as vitamins. Battlefields in France during WWI look manicured in comparison.

You can set traps on all of the holes and flood them into the traps with a garden hose.....or, like I did on my outfield one year, pour a few gallons of antifreeze down the holes and kill the little bastards. Just don't tell the EPA. I know one baseball coach who sat on a golf cart with a .22 pistol and shot a few of them every weekend too.

I catch a lot of gophers with traps, but moles i believe are bigger and smarter, ...you can try the car exhaust route...hook a hose up to the exhaust on your car and stick it in their tunnel and gas the little wuckers. The problem, as with poisen, is there is no proof that a death has occurred. i think thats 2nd degree, not 1st degree mole slaughter.

Moles or gophers ?

Mole

Gopher..

Moles do not show themselves above ground. They push up dirt and leave no hole, just a fuckin pile of dirt. Since I like to resort to firearms whenever possible, I wait until I see one working, stand directly over the hole with a 12 gauge and blow a fuckin hole 6 inches deep. Very seldom hit them with the shot load, but the concussive shock kills them . They are searching for grubs, worms and easy to work soil. You can set mole traps, a lot of my farmer buds do, but they are pretty tricky. Placing bait can be hard as well. The hard core farmers have a machine that injects propane in the hole and then ignites it off in the gopher runs. Kills the fuckers 3 or 4 at a time.

Pocket gophers make a hole and then push out dirt in a circular pattern around the hole. They show themselves, and will peer out of the hole and look around. Best to be behind them and aim at the bottom edge of the hole. Then blast them. Shot gun works decent on them as well. You can also pick them off with a good pellet gun, for the in town silent approach. They are a bit easier to trap. Use a cinch type trap.

Sage rats:

Image

These little bastards are numerous over in the high desert (sup Trampis?). They just take over the alfalfa fields, and create all kinds of crop loss. We go over there right about now to Christmas Valley to a couple of farms, and the farmer gives us 2000 rounds each or more if we need it, and we just whack them all day long. The hawks and eagles come pick them up as fast as we whack them.

War Caddyshack.

Pretty sure it's moles, I've never seen one working and no visible hole, just mounds of dirt. Everywhere. Before I can even mow, I have to use a rake to knock down their fucking hills.

Neighbor told me pretty much the same thing about them being after grubs. Get rid of the grubs, get rid of the moles. Supposedly. So I bought some grub killer last week and spread that shit on the yard. I'll see if it works.

I liked Mace's idea of using anti-freeze though. I might try that as well, or gasoline. I don't see myself standing outside with a shotgun pointed at the ground trying to get rid of molehills by blasting more holes in the yard.

Moles also eat worms and other soil living insects. But you probably killed all the grubs, worms and every other living thing in your soil off with the grub killer insecticide, and you will still have the moles until they move on. Which they may or may not do. So how did that work out for you ?

Anti freeze and gasoline ? Really ? Introduce some more pollutants to the soil there..although years ago I did pour some gasoline down a gopher hole, let it sit for a minute then a buddy threw his butt down there and it went off. Fuckin flames out of about 7 holes in the field..and had to have offed the gophers since that was the end of the holes in that field.

What we used to do out in the country for gophers (no moles) would be to dig out holes big enough to set traps then cover them back up. The gophers were most active during the Summer and that garden hose coiled up on the sidewalk really heated up.

So if I saw a new hole being made then I would grab a shovel and then run the hose down for a few seconds. Pull the hose out and the super heated water would get the gopher to surface for air... and waiting next the hole with the shovel resting on the ground next to the hole acting as a guillotine was very effective.

Flooding holes is a waste of water as they generally have a very extensive tunnel network in which to escape. Then the ground absorbs the water fairly quickly so you gotta do it as soon as you see dirt movement.

Using the .22 was fun trying but a low success rate as you had to be nearby and be lucky to see it pop up before it went back down. The scalding water method with guillotine shovel method had a very high success rate if you saw dirt movement. Traps were the 2nd most effective on freshly made holes. Just my .02

The problem I had was with ground squirrels and flooding them was very effective. They'd come running out of the holes and my players would catch some of them by putting pop bottles in a hole and the ground squirrels would run right into the bottle. Antifreeze was more effective because it killed them and they never returned.
