However, insofar as it was a personal experience and one that cannot be repeated (not by me, anyway), it cannot be properly used as evidence to prove His existence to others.

Of course Python, the lyrics in that song are perfect. The line from "Signs", while just oozing with Christian well-meaning, was just manipulative propoganda. Eric Idle and company were going for a joke with heart and good intentions. Just whistle and smile in the face of adversity and look on the bright side of life.Python wrote:But you turn around and quote Life of Brian?Jay in Phoenix wrote:Well quoting Mel Gibson in "Signs" isn't going to score you any brownie points.

Re: God or Not
I too believe, but I also have questions. My problem, like yours, is in organized religions. If you want to follow the teachings of the Bible, I find that perfectly acceptable, even though there are plenty of holes in the book. Again, this falls on the various edits and re-writes over the centuries for religious/political motivations that have nothing to do with faith and the Word. And "Oh God" does have some great messages, as does Albert Brooks' brilliant "Defending Your Life."Papa Willie wrote:Rack it. And rack Wags' response, too. It has become uncool to believe in God. Yes, exactly. But this is again going back to faith over religion. Take the religious junk out of the equation and focus on what it is you believe and how you adhere to it on this level. I don't really know if there is a Heaven or Hell, and I don't know exactly who or what God is. None of us do. Some claim they do as the thump their Bibles in a frenzy of zealious righteousness, but they don't know. How can anybody KNOW? I mean, what if God is the very cosmos itself. Planets, stars and galaxies all are born, live and die. Sound familiar? Not saying this is what I believe mind you, just saying "what if."And I don't really think any more or less about a person if they believe or not. It's more of a personal thing to me. And before you judge me, you might want to ask yourself - if you're so fucking sure of such an important thing, then why do you struggle so much to pay your own fucking mortgage?
What's so wrong in having hope that when we leave this place, we get to go to a much better place and party out with all our friends who've left us? Sounds pretty cool to me. Either way, there's not jack SHIT we can do about it, except try to do the golden rule thing & be cool...
The only true way you are going to know the ultimate truth is once you've punched your ticket to your dirt nap. Could just be that you close your eyes and fade to black and that is that. Nothing more. I certainly hope and pray that isn't the case, but again, who can say for sure.
Do unto others as you would have done unto you. Live life to the fullest. Spread good kharma, and have faith in whatever makes you happy.
Embrace peace.
Exceptin' of course in this place.

there are lots of good words in the bible, sandwiched between a lot of horseshit....but really, does anybody think that particular book actually makes someone a better person?Jay in Phoenix wrote:If you want to follow the teachings of the Bible, I find that perfectly acceptable, even though there are plenty of holes in the book.
it doesn't

Of course that is that. Your consciousness is nothing more than electrical impulses and a dead battery doesn't generate electricity. Then the atoms you borrowed to assemble your bio-electrical meat suit return to the earth and become something else ad infinitum.Jay in Phoenix wrote:Could just be that you close your eyes and fade to black and that is that.

And how would you know that?
Re: God or Not
Because that is the way living systems and everything else in this universe works.
Our star will live, expand into a red giant in its death throes and then fade leaving behind a planetary nebula which will return heavy elements to the interstellar medium which may eventually give rise to new stars, new galaxies and new life.

why can't you accept it? imo the fade to black scenario is exactly what happens. imo this is our only shot at life. when we die what happens after the fade to black? nothing, absolutely nothing. learn to accept this.

Good question. If God is the Creator...where did he come from? The question remains the same.Papa Willie wrote:mvscal wrote:Because that is the way living systems and everything else in this universe works.

What started it all?
The only difference is whether or not you choose to answer that question with a primitive fairy tale or leave it unanswered until we get more information.

Agreed, with some minor tweaks:Papa Willie wrote:In here - we pretty much all know who believes what. I'd rather talk about beer & boats. And big tits.
1. I've pretty much passed the point in my life where I thought beer was the shit. Now it mostly tastes unpleasant and gives me the runs (more than one or two, anyway).
2. Boats -- saw enough of them in the Navy (albeit of a different kind) to last a lifetime, so no real need to talk about them.
3. Big tits, OTOH, are something I probably will never grow tired of talking about.
