It's sad that they're celebrating Reagans 100th birthday thruout Eastern Europe but not so much here.

I lived thru those times too, 88, and the most vivid memory I have of Reagan was when he was walking out of the Rejavik SALT treaty talks (1986?) with a very pissed off look on his face and Gorby trailing behind, looking like somebody just shot his dog.

Everybody was like - "oh fuck, what has Ronnie gone and done now?".

Turns out, he was just starting to kick over the crumbling infrastructure that was the Soviet Union and communism in general.

Pride was restored and his leadership was like a beacon of freedom.
He also stared down the Soviets who were on the verge of a "Red Dawn" style invasion of the Continental U.S.

Different group of hostages and it remains one of the most brilliant coups in the history of realpolitik. We got our hostages back in return for selling anti-tank missiles to Iran and then used the proceeds of that sale to kill commies in Nicaragua. The missiles were then used to destroy Iraqi tanks which were herded into predictable avenues of approach due to the fact that we were providing them with satellite intel.

Bottom line: We got our people back, killed some commies in Central America and manipulated the Iran-Iraq War into a stalemate. What's not to like?
