Re: !27 Days!
i've mentioned that my uncle played for OU (QB backup to All Big 8 Bobby Warmack and then got beat out by Jack Mildren). Unc was a thrower, and he was the starter coming out of Spring ball over Jack. and so the wishbone was not a blessing for him....BUT, he had an old OU game jersey that was #27 that i ended up with. old timey silky cotton weave, really pretty heavy fabric but really tough. double stitching/fabric up where the shoulder pads were. i wore that thing all the time as a kid. don't know who #27 was or why my uncle (#16) had it....but i loved that thing. it was great quality.
uncle was a longtime high school coach in OK at Muskogee and Bartlesville (5A)....and then Amarillo and someplace else in north Texas. they beat Tulsa Washington one year in the playoffs when TW was sick. good buddies with a lot of Switzer's cronies, Charley North (who has been everywhere: OU, after Barry he was at Arkansas and then ATM for a bit...).
number #27. or OU's Damon Stell was #27. decent OU back in the middle Switzer period when he lost 2-4 games 3 years in a row, early 80's. Danny Bradley years. i was two years younger than Stell and Norman played PC Whichever high school was his. i dressed off the JV for the game and ran a kickoff return team after a kid got hurt.....Stell fielded it came my side. i put my pads right in his ribcage and bounced off him like a pinball. i remember his thigh-pad crushing into the downside of my helmet. there was a reason (couldn't tackle for shit, hated lifting weights, and lettered in golf 4 years) i played flanker in the Norman High "Houston Veer" of the legendarily mediocre but longtime NHS coach Cotton Wade. fellow Oklahomans will appreciate this: that guy could not beat Midwest City to save his life.

Who could beat Mid West City back then though? How many years did they have one of the Gundy brothers slinging the pigskin around? Back in the day Tulsa Washington, Mid West Cith, Lawton Ike, and Wynnewood were pretty much unstoppable in their respective classes.King Crimson wrote:i've mentioned that my uncle played for OU (QB backup to All Big 8 Bobby Warmack and then got beat out by Jack Mildren). Re: !27 Days!
i tell you, i played baseball and football against Cale. he was a real asshole. Cale was that guy that slid into 2nd with spikes real high. helluva athlete, though. i was a Steve Collins guy just based on 1. the option and 2. hating Cale. those MWC teams loved to beat up on Norman West (jr high) and NHS. MWC was a tough town back then. those guys were out to hurt you. they did suck out loud in basketball...which was a mild consolation. you know this, they were like a farm team for OU wrestling there for a decade in the 80's.SunCoastSooner wrote: Who could beat Mid West City back then though? edit: Brent and Buck Dequasie were some scary dudes to play against from MWC who both played for OU.

Re: !27 Days!
I was really only at all familiar with Oklahoma high school football growing up and with that only because I would be heading back home to where ever my father was stationed at the time from spending the summers on the ranch and in the patch with my grandfather in Oklahoma and Kansas about the same time as football would be starting up. My grandfather would mail us VHS tapes with the high school blitz (I think it was channel 5).King Crimson wrote:i tell you, i played baseball and football against Cale. he was a real asshole. since a sea of poor hiring decisions didn't make my point, we can't wait for the season to start because we'll probably go the same 7-5, possibly 8-4, as last year, only this time teams will average less than 5000 yards of offense against us. also, hoke has been recruiting actual football players rather than the niche players dickrod was, so i guess the future is bright from a practical standpoint as opposed to the theoretical one dickrod has us believing in.
michigan is like 400-3 against the sec. we were bound to lose one.

Re: !23 Days!
indulge me here, on the subject of Damon Stell....here he is #27 making the block on the downfield PSU db in the national championship game. a highly underrated aspect of Switzer's teams was their downfield blocking....esp the backs the wr's. i recently watched this game at a fam gathering for Christmas a year or so ago, and PSU really shut down Holieway. OU gets this TD, and spring Lydell Carr for the game winner later in the game....but PSU was not giving up anything on the corner. great D.
