God would think it's "more morally correct" to take that of which you do not need, and distribute it to the "less fortunate." You know this, yet you choose to ignore it or rationalize a stance with enough caveats so that you can feel OK about it.
"Lev. 19:19ff. Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the LORD your God."
To answer your question, it sounds like the poor as well as joe schmo from down the road who has a few less tomatoes than you do.
poptart says charity is a "nice" thing. His Boy says it's a way of life.
Says scripture that I don't believe in. But since poptart does, I wonder why he chooses to selectively preach it.
I posted this thread for "social" or "political" discussion.
Well,... I confess, I also posted it so that I could make a little fun of liberals. :D
I didn't post the thread for theological or Biblical discussion.
But since you've "attacked" me in this way, I want to give you a full reply.
People often bring up parts of Old Testament Law (as you did with Leviticus 19:9-10) and try to nail current Christians for not following God's Word.
When a person does this, they are doing so because there is a fundamental understanding of the Bible that they must not be aware of.
The point is this, Mgo: When Christ came, died on the cross and resurrected, everything was finished IN HIM.
That includes the Law which God had given to the Israelites - part of which you cited.
Christians are not called to obey the Law which God gave to the Israelites.
We are simply called to have faith in Christ, who finished everything.
You can read for yourself.
Romans 10:1-4, 9
[1] Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
[2] For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
[3] For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
[4] For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
[9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Galatians 3:24
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Paul, writing in Romans, is lamenting over the Jews (of which he is one) - who think they can have righteousness and salvation by following the Law.
But Christ is the CONCLUSION of the Law and a man's righteousness and salvation is only found when he places his faith in Him.
The law (including what you cited in Leviticus) was given for a time, and for a purpose -----> to ultimately bring people to Christ.
About income tax, this is how I see it:
There should not be an income tax.
That's could make long discussion of it's own.
But if we are having an income tax, you can't tax everyone, say, $10,000 for the year, as 88 pointed out, because it puts an unreasonable burden on the poor.
A flat tax seems most fair - or
moral, to me.
Say 25% of all income from all income earners.
The wealthy end up paying a shitload more in actually CASH this way than the poor do - but the poor are still part of the game - as they should be.
They use the same services that everyone else uses.
Also as 88 said about progressive tax, there is no justification for taking more of one person's money than another to fund the same government, other than one person has more of it to take than the other.
Personally, I can't see how this isn't blatant theft.
It's certainly not freedom.
If you care to know what I think about politics and faith, you can see it here.
