nebraska and the fullback position

Post by King Crimson »

i thought this was interesting from a BTPCF perspective: nothing to do with conference realignment.....and i will assume most BTPCF posters are fans of the fullback position in principle.

according to this article, NU gave the ball to the FB for the *first time* since 2004. 7 years, no fullback carries at Nebraska?

"Old-school Nebraska fans surely loved Beck’s first call of the game. Tyler Legate’s 1-yard run marked the first time a fullback had carried the ball for Nebraska since 2004."

Does anyone still use the I formation for their base offense?

MSU is still heavy on the I, and the Maryand-I when on their goal line and opponent's goal line.

In the I-formation, the fullback is blocking somebody 95% of the time. On plays between the tackles, he's hitting a LB; on passes and running plays ouside the tackles, he's trying to blast the DE or outside LB, depending on the defensive scheme. Not a whole lot of variety there. Fullbacks aren't supposed to get the ball except as a change-up. I-formation is perfect for The Corn because it's dull & predictable and easy for the offensive players to grasp

It isn't predictable when play action is your bread & butter. There is nothing more beautiful on offense than a play action fake to your tailback, and a deep pass down field.

vintage nebraska was dull in that they only had about 5 plays....but they blocked each one of them up front about 14 ways. that was beauty.

Predictability can be impressive as well, perhaps more so. When the opposition knows what you're doing and still can't stop it.

We're trying to run kind of a modernized version of the old Nebraska O. Execution leaves much to be desired, but that isn't surprising with a new scheme, a newb OC, seven new starters, and a qb that is definitely a work in progress. As long as we see improvement over the course of the season I'll be satisfied. Just glad after years of hodgepodge we FINALLY completed our break from the WCO. I understand that at the time it was the D not the O that was broken when Bo took-over and TO didn't want to throw everything out all at once but IMO he made a mistake in pushing for Watson to stay being that type of O Watson knows, WCO, wasn't the long-term plan. The long-term plan was always more of a spread-option scheme and that Beck would have an upgrade in responsibility. Should've just broken all the eggs at once and went with a new O from the start. We'd have been worse in '08, had fewer wins and not been a Gator Bowl-winning team, but the growing-pains would be long-since over. We may have won one of those no-offense heartbreaking CCG's and we'd be a better team now.

I'm not even in the top 5 in post count. But probably top 3 of those who have hurt the seer's feelings.

Not always. On passing plays, lots of teams use the FB as a de facto second TE, putting him in a pattern.

That having been said, fullback is, similar to center in basketball, a position that has been slowly dying over the last 25-30 years. If not for the emphasis on running the football at the youth and high school levels, it probably would have disappeared completely from the game by now.
