A lot of Colleges have done this
Wisconsin did this to a high school team.
What usually happens, is the lawyers for the trademark(logo) company, hunt for teams, who use the logo, then send a letter in the name of the university. Some times, the University, has no clue about the letter or threat of lawsuit. It's all done by the trademark lawyers
