Props to Cal
That was a big win today over...Presbyterian?
Three weeks into the season, and you're playing a church?
Touch football while the women were grilling hot dogs over by the picnic tables?
Guess you guys needed a confidence builder. This should give you plenty of momentum going into the Pac12 meatgrinder.

Not that ripping on Kal isn't always a winner around here...
But Kal got cancelled on -- same reason Oregon was playing Missouri State.
Can be pretty tough to get a decent game with a few weeks/months to go -- and the 1AAs will usually scoop that $350k-$450k paycheck right the heck up -- kinda creates a connundrum for the big school... hold out for a better game, and risk having to sign someone even worse, or take the sure thing?
If you get a sudden open-date, there's only so many teams out there with an open date the same week. Limits your choices. But they should have kept it in the California school system (Portland State actually had a conference game yesterday, so they couldn't bail and play Oregon, Portland State being the only 1AA in the state (bigger shool than Oregon or OS-BTW)).
I'm a broken record on the subject -- playing 1AAs sucks (sup Michigan, Duke, OS). BUT, if you're going to do it, you owe it to the people of your state to keep the money in-state.

How is it that the SEC has so many "sudden open dates" to fill? Every year?

Re: Props to Cal
I could be wrong, but I'm not sure that's exactly true. Do you know who cancelled and when? Did they ever actually have anybody scheduled for that slot?Dinsdale wrote:Not that ripping on Kal isn't always a winner around here...

I heard that they basically waited too long to schedule it because they didn't know where they might be playing. Candlestone, ATT, wherever. They should have realized that their boondoggle of a stadium project would create scheduling problems and worked them out sooner.
Stanford started their new stadium the day after the final game in 2005 and it was ready for the first game in 2006.
OK...it wasn't quite ready for San Jose State due to weather problems, but they played that game in SJ and it was ready for the next game.
Re: Props to Cal
According to this story they were still looking for three non-conference games as of November of last year, and then added Fresno State, Colorado and the Blue Hose in February.

Re: Props to Cal
i don't know anything about that site, but i'm pretty sure the Cal-Colorado game/series was on the books for a while. the first game of the home-home was last season in September in Berkeley and there was a lot of talk summer before last when the CU/Utah to the Pac move was made whether to keep Cal on the slate or how it would count (OOC or conf?) since they were now conference pals.Mikey wrote:According to this story they were still looking for three non-conference games as of November of last year, and then added Fresno State, Colorado and the Blue Hose in February.

Re: Props to Cal
10 months really isn't a lot of time to find a good game.
Cal/CU was almost as interesting a scenario as Utah/Oregon. Both the newcomers had the back ends of H&Hs with PAC teams.
OOC for Oregon became LSU, Nevada, and Misery St (desperation deal after the Utah switch). Nevada was pretty decent when the game was scheduled... not so much this season (since the source of much of their success now plays (almost) on Sundays).

.
i don't agree. Cal buttfucked CU in the mouth in Berkeley as one of the worst first half performances i've EVER seen for Hawk's bunch, and the game heavily attended by CU fans, hyped by the AD to get in touch with CU alum Cali donor-types, a preview of Pac conference play....the sheer embarrassment all CU fans felt that day wasn't the last nail in the Hawk coffin but a significant one.
this year's CU-Cal game went to OT. hardly worthy of total dismissal, imo.

I just meant "interesting" in regards to the scheduling logistics.

Re: Props to Cal
i see now. i misunderstood. that the Pac teams OOC already had the first half of the H-H with new members played (2010) and the second half yet to play (2011).Dinsdale wrote:I just meant "interesting" in regards to the scheduling logistics.

Re: Props to Cal
Gee, I'll bet you came up with that all by yourself.
RACK you for your originality.
So, back to the subject...who was originally scheduled to play in that slot, and when exactly did the "late cancellation" happen?

Re: Props to Cal
So it wasn't a last minute cancellation.
At least you owned up to that. I hope the Bears had a fun scrimmage.

Re: Props to Cal
The circumstances that led to Cal playing Presbyterian are ultimately irrelevant. At the end of the day there are teams without Presbyterian on their schedule (sup everybody?) and then there is Cal. When was the last time that, say, USC played a team like that?

Hmmmm... off the top of my head....
Georgia, Wake Forest, and Clemson all.... booked games this year with "The Big South"....
... of course, Cal didn't beat one of them by 7 points (Wofford).... sup' Clemson.
...and that team (Wofford) beat "the hose" by 7 points.
I'm just glad Cal didn't stoop to playing SJSU and Duke.

Re: Props to Cal
Yeah, to Mgo's point, I always find it more than a little specious when these teams schedule absolute doormats while crying about last-minute cancellations. Every team is subject to these things, yet somehow certain programs are habitually 'forced' to schedule D1-AA dogshit.
To answer his specific question, USC has never played a D1-AA team. They are one of only a very small handful of programs (three or four, IIRC) that can make such a claim. When someone cancels on them, they fill the spot with the likes of a MWC or WAC school, not a Presbyterian, Western Missouri or Wofford.

Re: Props to Cal
Presbyterian has a total enrollment of about 1,300 students. Cal probably has freshman chemistry classes larger than that. SJSU and Duke are not exactly powerhouse opponents but nowhere near as much of a cupcake for a Div I school to schedule as the Blue Hose.M2 wrote:MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote: At the end of the day there are teams without Presbytarian on their schedule (sup everybody?) and then there is Cal.

If you actually knew anything about the school you've just band-wagoned(Stanfurd) ... you'd know that their enrollment isn't much different than Presbyterian....Mikey wrote:Presbyterian has a total enrollment of about 1,300 students. Cal probably has freshman chemistry classes larger than that.

Re: Props to Cal
Wins vs Non BCS opponents and all the stats in those games should not count for BCS schools. Forget just 1A, get rid of all the games vs non BCS schools
