3 OTs? Shit, I picked the wrong time to turn the tv off. Glad Stanford won, though. I want to see them play the LSU/Bama winner in the MNC.

Frankly, I wasn't that impressed with Stanford, now they had to play a "real" opponent.

Mediocrity was all over the field, on both sides.

If USC would have got a better game out of Barkley, Stanford is crying in their beer today.

USC's defense has improved dramatically over this season.

Fun game to watch, though.

Barkley wasn't the problem. Woods was. While the refs cost USC a definite four points on that missed P.I. against Woods in the endzone, Woods' drops/blown routes cost USC a minimum of another seven points. He was just strangely out of it all night.

As an aside, since it doesn't merit a thread, and this is PAC-talk...

Jake Locker's cousin, Casey Locker, is an absolute beast at safety for Wazzu.

Wazzu didn't look that bad until their starting QB Tuel went down. His backup, Lobbestael, is in the Maynard-category, except he's a 5th year senior.

Painting their recievers to look like the broad side of a barn wouldn't help.

Yeah, I'm still in shock that Stanford didn't play as well on the road under the lights vs a quality opponent as they do at home vs San Jose State.

Crazy times!!

Stanford is vulnerable to speed on both sides of the ball, especially when they're on defense. They scored almost effortlessly on their first drive, but then pretty much stalled for the rest of the first half. This had me a little worried, but not so much because they've done this before. In those cases, though, they always came out smoking in the third quarter. When SC scored those two quick third quarter TDs I got really worried.

SC's defense impressed especially with their pass rush, which caused real problems, and their coverage which helped enable the rush to get to Luck. Stanford doesn't have much speed on the outside and they depend a lot on hitting quick short passes based on well run routes. SC was able to jump these a lot. Don't know what's happened to Owusu this year. He seems to have lost about 1/2 step from last season where he was standout at both returns and receiving.

Sure some bad calls hurt SC, but these cut both ways. I can remember at least one or two blatant holds that weren't called and also some late hits. You have to take those and just move on. Stanford was sloppier than I've seen them recently. Must have been a record number of offsides, delay of game, OB kickoffs, fucked up punts, etc.

I wasn't that impressed with Woods. Sure he's fast and runs well ATC but it seems that the reason he has so many catches and yards is that they throw it to him on about 67% of their offensive plays.

One thing I really like about Stanford is the lack bullshit. They play a businesslike game. I get really tired of the woofing, dancing, taunting and the other ghetto shit that comes out of so many teams. Kiffin really needs to instill some class in his players.

Another thing...I think that the "throw a flag" motion that's become so ubiquitous these days should be cause for a flag against the assholes that do it. Justified or not, you're not gonna get a ref to throw a flag by doing that and it just shows them up. You're playing the game, bitch, not calling it. Get up, go back to the huddle and STFU.

I'm a little more worried about Oregon now than before this game. But I don't think their defense can hold a candle to SC's. Should be a real shootout.

Based off of last night I wouldn't be very impressed with Woods either. He looked horrible. That was definitely an anomaly for him, as he's usually much more sure-handed and focused. His route-running yesterday was simply bizarre. Yeah, I know he missed most of practice this week, but he still should've known his routes. It wasn't that his timing was merely off; no, he kept cutting the wrong way.

It finally got to the point that Barkley had to chew him out, and Barkley usually doesn't get in his teammates' faces like that. It was just weird. Woods looked like he was in a fog all night.

Mike, I have no idea why Lane does this other than to take attention away from his young team and to put it onto himself. I would think if he really got out of hand his dad Monty would pull Lane aside and tell him to STFU.

I remember when Petros and Money were interviewing Lane a few weeks ago and Lane said Jeff Tedford wouldn't let him take the headphones off and drop the clipboard when David Carr rolled up 60+ points against Dennis Erickson's #7 Oregon State team (pre BCS Dins). Lane must have learned a lot from the former Fresno State QB and OC Jeff Tedford back in the day under Jim Sweeney.

So, if you're keeping score at home...

BYU won a BCS Championship.

And David Carr played in the pre-BCS era.

That call for taunting on Marquis Lee was total bullshit, he didnt show anyone up, didnt point at a Stanford player, he put his arms out to the side and dropped the football, didnt spike it.
Also what happened on the spot of the ball on the holding call on Stanford in OT? It was like 2nd and 6, Stanfords Guard gets a hold call on him and they move the ball 5 yards forward and its 2nd and 1. The rush only advanced the ball about 2 yards, they gained 3 yards and didnt lose a down by holding?
The call on the hit by TJ McDonald that allowed Luck to stay in the Heisman race was utter bullshit but its been par for the course in the Pac. The reason SEC teams play more aggressively on defense is because SEC refs dont call shoulder to shoulder hits as 15 yard personal foul penalties.
Kiffin was hit by Larry Scott for 10 grand for saying the refs were horrible, also par for the course, since Larry Scott has come on to the pac, he has done nothing but try to fuck USC over. Trojans should go independent, see what the fucking TV deal is worth without USC.

The radio honks pointed out something somewhat alarming the other day.

Since Scott tried to crackdown on the horrid PAC officiating (his heart was in the right place, I guess), it's had the opposite æffect...

It's a two-way tie for most penalty yards incurred in D1... between Colorado and Arizona State. Occupying the 6 and 7 spots are Oregon State and Kal. UDub is #12, Oregon #16.

USC is the least -penalized (by yards) team in the PAC, and they're still in the 50th percentile of penalized teams.

Wasn't that way until conference play started. By the time the conference schedule is done, I'm guessing the PAC will hold the #1 through #12 positions in penalty yards.

The PAC refs have been the undisputed Kings of Ineptitude for quite some time, but is dumping the laundry hamper out every game really an improvement?

The taunting and defensive holding calls are so inconsistant, it's laughable.

Over the last couplefew seasons, I have taken note of something an SECBSH I used to watch games with pointed out -- you can go a long time without seeing a defensive holding call in the SEC. As he pointed out, "Man's game, bitch... fight through it." Definitely like this aspect of SEC referees.

Scott suspended TJ McDonald for a hit that in the SEC would be a highlight reel play and a barometer of how tough their conference is. That freshman at Alabama, Hasean Clinton Dix, or something had all the honks on CBSCollege Sports taling what a great freshman player he is and then the plays they show are all shots of him hitting wideouts helmet to helmet or at least higher than the numbers. In the Pac 12 a player gets 15 yards and a suspension from the commissioner of the conference, whose only experience in sports is womens tennis.
That call on McDonald is what cost USC the game and has allowed Stanford and Luck to remain in the chase for BCS Bowls and Heisman trophies.
And can the Pac at least explain how Stanford gets called for Offensive holding on 2nd and 7 on a play that netted 1 yard and then it is 2nd and 2 on the next play instead of 2nd and 17? Holding is a 10 yard penalty, you dont move the ball 5 yards in the offenses direction and then give them the down over, especially when the hold was on an interior lineman.
A Trojan fan posted on another board that when Jay Strichers crew calls a USC game the Trojans have a 110% increase in penalties over any of the other Pac 12 officiating crews.
Larry Scott has done nothing but attempt to fuck USC since becoming Pac commissioner, USC may as well go independent if he is going to stay in charge
